The Croft is a Celtic musical instrument similar to a modern violin. It was invented in the 11th century and was primarily used for musical entertainment during the Celtic era. Only noble people who could afford it knew how to play it. Originally, it had no fingerboard, but it was later remodeled in the 13th century to add one. The Croft could be plucked like a guitar or bowed like a cello. It was often played with other instruments such as the lute, bagpipe, and harp. It was meant to be played in a group for fun and performance. My name is Max Castellanos and my instrument that I will present today is the Croft. The Croft was invented in the 11th century. What is the Croft exactly and what is its purpose? The Croft was a Celtic musical instrument that resembles a modern violin today. The word Croft came from the language Welsh which is now known as Wales as today. The instrument was mostly for musical entertainment during the Celtic era. The only people who knew how to play at the time were noble people which were the higher people who could pay and had the money to afford stuff. How was the Croft played? Well the Croft was a string instrument and it had a bow and you could pluck it like a modern violin today. In the 11th century I'm assuming it had no fingerboard but later in the 13th century it was later remodeled to add a fingerboard so we could put our fingers down to pluck it. You would set it like a guitar and you could either set it as a guitar while you pluck it or put it between your legs and use it to bow. It's almost like a cello as well if you can see it as a way like that. So the Croft wasn't really meant to play by itself. It was meant to play with different instruments like the lute or bagpipe and the harp. There were more instruments during the 11th century so it could play with any other instrument. It was a group to have fun and to be able to perform with a whole group no matter what. So you could either play it, I mean you could play it by yourself and I am going to.
