Overall, the podcast explores various problems and advantages of migration to the US. Hello everyone, welcome to our podcast, A World on the Move. I'm Andrew Hartweger. I'm Mason Miranda. I'm Hayden Kornman. And I'm John Henry Schwartz. Today we will be discussing the struggles and the benefits of migration. Before we start today, let's talk about what migration even is. Migration is the permanent movement of a person or people to a new location. What types of migration are there? There are two main types of migration, immigration, a migration to a new location, and emigration, migration from one location to another. Starting our topic today, let's talk about language barriers. Learning a new language or having a thick accent is a major problem in the process of migration for many reasons. For one, 78% of the United States speaks English. So immigrants from foreign countries will have to learn a new language just to live their daily lives. Also, let's talk about refugee status and what it means to be a refugee. Refugee status is a form of protection to people who meet the requirements of a refugee. They file a form and if they receive a referral, they can go through the cultural identity process. What is the cultural identity process? The cultural identity process is the assimilation of cultural values, customs, beliefs, and language by a person in a new country. So what is a refugee? I can answer that. A refugee is someone who has been forced out of their home country due to major conflict. Here we have an example of a Syrian refugee, Mrs. Mouda, who had trouble communicating once she arrived in the United States. We're at the airport looking for someone speaking Arabic, don't find anyone, and then we sit, I start crying, I start feeling, like, scary, or, you know, there is no one to connect, we don't have, like, a phone signal to connect anyone. This shows how coming to a new country can be scary because you aren't familiar with their culture and language. But there are also so many wonderful things that come from moving to the U.S. For example, it is a land of opportunity. U.S. is one of the most welcoming and charitable countries in the world, especially to refugees. There are many organizations like the International Institute of Migration that help and organize the refugees to start a new life in the country. A hospitable community also helps very much when welcoming a foreign person. Here is Mrs. Mouda talking about her experience once she arrived in a neighborhood in the United States. When I first came here, I was very welcome, because I have, like, a new, I'm new in the United States, I don't, I don't speak English, I don't have any member of my family here. So I received so many welcoming and supporting, helping from the community. So I love that. Starting our topic today, let's talk about language. She said that when she arrived at her community, it was very welcoming, and she felt a lot better about her decision to come here. Yes, I highly agree with that. The U.S. being one of the most welcoming and charitable countries, it is also full of opportunities. One of the main reasons for coming to the U.S. is the many opportunities. People come here to start a new life and get an education and a good job. Once they have a good job with a good education, they can create a great foundation for their children and future. One of these examples is Mr. Woodcock. He migrated and found his future job at hand as a teacher for St. Louis Priory School in St. Louis, Missouri, of the United States. Before immigrating, did you have, like, interest in teaching, or did that develop in the U.S.? That really developed in the U.S., yeah. My first career, if you like, as a journalist. I like how the United States can change and give more opportunities like this to many other people, like Mr. Woodcock, who migrate to the United States. People don't just move to countries like the U.S. for jobs, but also for benefits of a new future. It is a struggle, at first, for people migrating from poor countries like Afghanistan and Syria because they have less money. Since they have less money, it is hard to convert their currency to their new country. If they also have little money, it is hard to provide for themselves their basic needs like food. Although, it is a struggle for people in poverty. Coming to a powerful and rich country like the U.S. gives the people a chance to start a new life and work hard so they can get out. That is why the U.S. is full of immigrants. People are pulled to the U.S. with poll factors like the abundance of employment and other opportunities. Wait, what is a poll factor? A poll factor is something in a place that induces people to move to a new location. For example, a poll factor is the U.S.'s resources and opportunities. But since so many people want to move to the U.S., a struggle in the future could be overpopulation. That is why the U.S. has an immigration quota. What is an immigration quota and why does the U.S. have them? A quota is a limit of immigrants from a certain country for one year. The U.S. has them because they don't want many people from one country to migrate but way less from another to migrate. They also don't want a huge amount of immigrants to come because although the U.S. has many resources and high employment, they want to sustain that amount and keep that abundance. This shows how another struggle to migrate to the U.S. is being legally accepted into the country. Many people around the globe try to move to the U.S. but the U.S. doesn't allow everybody in right away. The U.S. doesn't want unauthorized immigrants to move because they have to contain the amount of people living in the U.S. What is an authorized immigrant and why is it a struggle for them to migrate? An unauthorized immigrant is someone who has not been legally accepted into a country but still migrated there. It is a struggle for people to migrate because you have to go through many processes and you have to be accepted out of the tons of other people trying to move. There are many other hardships from trying to migrate to the U.S. Overall, through this podcast, we have learned about many different problems when migrating and the advantages of migrating to the U.S. Thank you for listening to The World on the Move.
