So listeners, pour yourself a cup of your favorite brew, sink into a comfy chair, and tune in as we begin the journey together. Hello, listeners, and welcome back. This is Martha, your host for this week. And I have the pleasure of introducing one of my closest friends. She is passionate about leadership and development, has lots of experience in sales, and now has a new adventure she started with a consulting firm, helping nonprofits, helping them to soar. So without further ado, I would love to introduce you to my friend, Catherine Phillips. Catherine, can you start by telling us a little bit about yourself and your background? Sure, I sure can. Well, I am a proud mom of two wonderful daughters. They're adults now, which makes me want to cry. So I'll always say I'm a mom is my most important role in life. I have a new business owner. I'm really excited about that. I'm a professor at the local university here, Bowling Green State University. Very excited about that. I'm local to Northwest Ohio my whole life, 44 years. And so yeah, just at this point in time in my life, I'm actually loving life and, you know, just enjoying it while it lasts. Yes, and I so enjoyed watching it. You're like my steady to my crazy, and so it's been so good getting to witness your journey right now. Thank you. So you mentioned early on that you faced a lot of childhood sexual abuse and significant neglect. Can you share more about these experiences and how they shaped your early years? Yeah, absolutely. So I grew up in a single parent household with my dad and then three older brothers. And at that time, I was around five years old where my alcoholic father started to sexually abuse me. We were significantly neglected emotionally. We didn't have food. We would scavenge within the neighborhood. My grandparents on my mom's side, wonderful. They always made sure we had food and things like that, but they didn't know, you know, obviously what was going on. But I think how it shaped me in many ways is made me a survivor. And that sounds really trite because we hear survival stories all the time, but what it did is make me acutely aware to my surroundings. And instead of allowing that really arduous experience take me down, I have channeled that energy into going to school, into raising my girls, into just making a better life for myself. And so I think I was faced with two choices, the choice to have that abuse use me, or will I use it? And I just was really lucky. I grew up in Swanton, Ohio. People locally know it as Swantucky, and that makes me so mad. I love my Swanton Bulldogs. But I was really fortunate to be born into a community that loved me. All my teachers and coaches, they showed me and gave me the love and support and stability that I didn't have at home. So I think part of that experience and having the courage and strength to go on to get my college degree, go on and be a great mom. I can't think of something different if you have them on next week, but you know, I'm not a perfect mom, but I am a great mom. It definitely has significantly impacted my life. For sure. For sure. That's awesome. Yeah. Isn't it amazing how God provides us with families when we don't necessarily get the cream of the crop, but he surrounds us with people that kind of fill that bucket for us. Yes, I agree. And I have consistently, not all the time, and so of course I'm going to give the highlights, but I consistently have leaned into what has been provided for me versus what I lacked. And so like when I do a review of my life, I used to work at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, and you know, at the end of life, people review their lives. And so I have done that continuously. And you know, when I look at my life, I think of how fortunate I was to have people placed in my life at certain times. Like I even think of you, Martha. I mean, last June, I was a sad little puppy, but I'm still going to conferences. I'm trying to make it work. But the listeners, I was going through a pretty bad breakup. It had been a year, but anyway, and Martha popped into my life, and yeah, and here we are. Yeah, we all need each other at a certain period of time. Every kind of season is forever, I would say. But I'm just grateful because we have formed this great friendship then. That's right. Yeah. So thinking about how those early informative years formed you, now you're a mom. Yeah. Two beautiful young women. Yeah. So what has it been like for you being a mom and raising these two adult children? Yeah, I think for me, it was really imagining all the things that I literally kneeled down on the floor and laid on the side of my bed that I would have as a little girl. And, you know, looking back and knowing what it felt like to be scared and what it felt like to not have food in my belly and what it felt like to rock myself to sleep and all the things that I lacked, I made it my mission to pour into them all the things that I didn't have. And because I never, ever wanted them to look back and say, my mom didn't do, etc. Now they have plenty of stories where I have fallen on my face, but they also have plenty of stories where I've gone back and said, hey, I was wrong. I'm sorry. If I need to be a part of any healing, let's do this. Even to the point like, do we need to go to a counselor? You know, mom, I'm home now, I don't need to go to a counselor. But I think that's important, because when you're past such significant trauma, it's easy to pass it on to the next generation. And so I think that's what I have tried to do is not pass that down to the generation. Unfortunately, you know, I've passed down divorce, unfortunately, you know, my past abuse did affect the partnerships and my ability to be in a partnership. And of course, I've grown over the years. I've just given them all everything that I have. Yeah. And it's so important. There has been a real big focus on generational curses. Yeah. You know, breaking that tie. And it is what a gift you're giving your girls. Yeah. And yourself. Yeah. And part of it, too, is nurturing them, is nurturing the little girl inside of me. I also was very lucky to have a very tenacious older brother. He got married very young to my sister-in-law, and they became my foundation that I didn't have in parents. And so I really look up to them, how they had family dinners, and how they, you know, he was the first one to kind of start breaking those generational chains, you know, and providing the family. And he's very successful, and they have all the fancy things. And a lot of love, too, you know, sent us about the fancy things, but a lot of love. You mentioned the little girl inside. So I know that there are lots of resources from a psychological perspective. And I know one that you hold dear is called the ACE score, something that you use as a barometer to show what kind of abuse did you go through and where you land. So can you tell us a little bit about that? Sure. How you came to hear about it? Yeah. So probably, like, because of the trauma, you know, I found very happy and upbeat on this podcast. But there have been a lot of dark moments, for sure, more than I possibly could even count. And I just, I didn't want to feel bad anymore. So I did seek out therapy, I did seek out counseling. And I was seeing this one therapist who actually specialized in trauma. And so she, you know, we went through my whole story. And she said, you know, you realize you score an eight out of 10 on the ACE score. And the ACE scale, excuse me, the ACE scale was based on research. And there's a high correlation between the higher your ACE score is, the more likely you will have chronic illnesses, die at a younger age, etc. So it just shows, like, the horrible impact trauma has. Right. And she said this to me, because she wanted me to understand, because I was getting mad at myself, like, why don't I feel better? Like, I've been in therapy for like a decade. Yeah. You know, and then now it's like 20 years. And now it's like the years keep going by. But I just want this to be done. And she's like, it's not going to be done. This will be your life's work to continuously undo that trauma and heal. And so I think that score is just one of the tools that I use to be like, to remind myself to be kind to myself. Not to give excuses, doesn't mean that I get a free pass when I lose my temper and I've been abused. No, I don't get a free pass. But I definitely can be kind to myself and not it's okay that I still go to therapy. Yeah. It's okay that I'm on medication. Yeah. I'm going to be on medicine for the rest of my life. And I'm okay with that. The doctor told me your neural system has been significantly injured. Yeah. And you need medicine. And so I'm not I'm not ashamed of that. I'm proud that I don't use unhealthy coping mechanisms anymore. I'm very proud. I'm two years alcohol free.
