This is a morning devotional program called Echoes from Calvary. They start with a prayer and scripture reading from St. Luke, chapter 10, verses 25-37. The scripture talks about loving your neighbor and tells the story of the Good Samaritan. The speaker emphasizes the importance of loving and helping others, regardless of race or nationality. They also mention a record called "When Home is Heaven" by Dr. Lewis H. Evans, which talks about the importance of living together peacefully and teaching love and acceptance in our homes. The program ends with some songs about God's love and peace. ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ Good morning. May God bless you as you stay tuned to our morning devotional program, Echoes from Calvary. And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? He said unto him, What is written in the law? How readest thou? And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind, and thy neighbor as thyself. And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right. This do, and thou shalt live. But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbor? And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. And by chance there came down a certain priest that way, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion on him, and went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. And on the morrow, when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him, and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee. Which now of these three thinkest thou, was neighbor unto him that fell among the thieves? And he said, He that showed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise. May God add his blessing to the reading of Scripture from St. Luke, chapter 10, verses 25-37. Evans. In today's world, and with so many problems, and when we have to learn to better get along one with the other, I felt that one of these talks on this record would be especially helpful to us. So now I'm going to share with you one of these talks entitled The World is Your Family. The world is your family. Remember that. If we forget that, it will be chaos. Then our homes will be bombed and in ruins, silent cinders in an atomic age. We must learn to live together happily now, or we will not live at all. A religious person is one whose emotions have gone to school to God's love. He must teach us how to feel. In this scientific day, how we feel has suddenly become more important than what we know. For out of the heart are the issues of life. The home is the greatest university of the emotions, or it can be. You fathers are the kings that stamp little empires of the home with royalty or rebellion. You equip them with love or with limbs of steel. You mothers are the true secretaries of state who sign the peace or declare the wars. She watched her daughter one day. Her arms were around her father's neck and she was kissing him fondly and telling him how much she loved him. But all the while her mother noticed that across her father's shoulder she was sticking out her tongue at her brother Tom. The mother stepped up to her and said, Mary, take down your arms from around your father's neck. Your father loves Tom as much as he loves you, and you can't love your father and stick out your tongue at your brother. So take down your arms and move away. That it is. Did you catch it? You cannot keep your arms around your heavenly father's neck and stick out your tongue at Tom. That other member of God's family, of any other class, of any other race, of any other land, God loves Tom as much as he loves you. There is no fatherhood of God without a brotherhood of man. Christ said, By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples if ye love one another. I shall always judge your love for me by your love for the brothers whom I love. What teachers, what professors we all are unwittingly or purposefully in the university called home. Our children do not start out with race prejudice. They learn it. They are born, socially speaking, colorblind. God made of one blood, the nations of the earth. They never challenge it until we do. You've got to be taught to hate and fear. One great lesson must cancel out our hatreds and our prejudices. God teach us to love. A child's love for the neighbor boy is his prayer for peace. If we all would love our neighbors, then wars would cease. You fathers are the rulers who declare the wars or sign the peace treaty. You mothers are those that declare the tirade or draw up the treaty. The Prince of Peace has to take out of the hearts of our homes all the combustibles that make for war. This will be our peace. Peace, peace, Jesus is the peace of the world. Peace, peace, peace for our restless world. I was a sinner condemned of sin, but Jesus heard my plea. He saved my soul and he made me whole. Yes, he cares for me. Jesus is the peace of the world. Peace, peace, peace for our restless world. He went and died on Joseph's grave and paid the price for all. And now he lives in heaven above, listening for your call. Jesus is the peace of the world. Peace, peace, peace for our restless world. If you're received by Christ, you may repent and then believe. For he will wash your sins away, set your spirit free. Jesus is the peace of the world. Peace, peace, peace for our restless world. Peace, peace, peace for our restless world. And who is my neighbor? The lawyer asked of Christ. We find that that was a very pertinent question in that day and also to us today it also is of great importance. Far too many times we think of our responsibilities to God and we think of God's love to us. We think of our reciprocating love to him, but we fail to recognize that there are others in the world beside us and many of them need your help and mine. Who is my neighbor? Who is your neighbor? Who is our neighbor? We find that in God's word Christ told a vivid story about a man who had a real need. There was no question at all about this need. It was very obvious. The man was left half dead. And we find as three persons came along, only one of them offered any help at all. Two of them chose to not become involved. The first one was a priest. Certainly one would think a priest, a religious man, a religious leader would have compassion on one who had a desperate need such as this. But yet we find he was indifferent to the situation. We don't even know whether or not he went over and looked him over. The Bible says when he saw him he passed by on the other side. He didn't want to become involved here. It might involve some of his time. It might involve some of his money. He did not want to become involved with the man who was there half dead. Next a Levite came along and Christ said, likewise a Levite when he was at the place. Now you know those of the tribe of Levi were of the priestly tribe. Now today I think an analogy here would be those who are Christians, not Christian leaders, not ministers, but those who profess to be Christians. And certainly if anyone should have compassion on those who need help, it should be a Christian, should it not? A Levite came by. When he was at the place he came and looked on him and passed by on the other side. I suppose he very well could be likened to those today who are Christians or professing Christians and when they hear of the needs of others, they say, my, isn't that too bad. My, I feel sorry for him. And it's always possible too here that the Levite may have very well murmured to himself and sort of shook his head and said, my, this poor fellow, I feel sorry for him. That's a terrible shame that this man has been beaten by thieves and left here to die. But yet the Bible says he passed by on the other side. Yes, he looked him over. He may have even uttered some words of sympathy, but he passed by on the other side. He did nothing about it. Next we have the account of a certain Samaritan. And here no one would expect really a Samaritan to do much because they were a race that were looked down upon. Some of the Jewish people referred to the Samaritans as dogs. They were outcasts. Nothing much would be expected of a Samaritan. No one really would have criticized him harshly had he seen the man in distress and turned his back and passed by. But yet we find that his actions were entirely different. The Bible says he had compassion on him. In that word, compassion made all the difference. The Christian should have compassion on those who are in need regardless of whether they have spiritual needs, physical needs, or financial needs. The Samaritan went to him. He didn't just say, I'm sorry. He didn't say, what can I do to help? But it says he bound up his wounds. Here is something that he did in a real practical way. He gave him help that he so desperately needed. Not only this, but then he offered him what he had, set him on his own beast, brought him to the inn and took care of him. We find here that the good Samaritan showed what it was to be a neighbor. May God help us as Christians to be neighbors to those in need.
