Pre-historic southwestern cultures produced birdcalls, whistles, and small flutes from bone, and reed—together with large highly evolved flutes of wood. The later Basketmaker and early Pueblo periods, formerly “Anasazi”, gave rise to some of the most sophisticated instruments in the pre-contact American Southwest. These early flutes and their present day decedents have a beautifully warm, and often exotic quality.
