The discussion by Karofiana Zillinger focuses on social justice and the role of nursing in policymaking. Social justice involves ensuring equal access to healthcare, education, housing, safety, and fair treatment for all individuals. As a nurse, advocating for social justice means addressing social determinants of health, such as homelessness and food insecurity, to fulfill patients' holistic needs. Karofiana emphasizes the importance of advocating for policy changes to promote health equity and social justice. Additionally, she highlights the impact of social injustice on the health of vulnerable populations, such as prisoners, and the role of nurses in disease management and improving health outcomes. Overall, the discussion stresses the significance of social justice in nursing practice and policymaking for better health outcomes and quality of care. Hello, my name is Karofiana Zillinger, and this discussion is about social justice and the impact of nursing within policy making. What does social justice mean? Social justice means inclusion of all people to receive safe, standardized methods of social health care, education, living, housing, safety, community infrastructure and programs, access to clean water, no chemical plants or landfills near communities, equitable wages, equal forms of the laws, fair treatment across the board, no special privileges for any companies and every company abides by the same rules, no matter the size, no passing laws at 2 a.m., the public must have awareness of laws for their benefits or detriments, and no special treatments for no set groups or religion. It is a human right to have basic needs met, and as a nurse and reinforcing social justice for all people to have health care, housing, education, employment, and safetiness, no matter their zip code or racial class. I also think that over-medicating and over-billing for services are a violation of public safety and the law. This causes a breakdown of trust in social justice as required to root out this practice of individuals to gain reimbursement of state and federal aid plus monies, as the nurse advocating for these changes would certainly help society to be healthier, educated, and heal trust within the health care system. Why is social justice a core tenet of nursing? I think social justice is a core tenet for nursing due to how the laws and policies affect budget, staffing, treatment, patient education, nurse-to-patient ratio, higher education for nurses, affordability of health care, and accessibility to health care. Organizations have policies, procedures, and guidelines for staff to follow and uphold their peers to as well. Laws that affect health care budget when it comes to readmission for the same circumstance or problem systems, symptoms of mistreatment, or hospital-acquired infection, injuries, et cetera, could receive lesser funding per law. Federal and state government determine who is eligible for care under specific benefit programs, who can't be reimbursed for providing care. As a nurse advocating for social justice, my responsibility is to maintain safe practice and make sure that the patient's needs are addressed by acknowledging any social determinants of health the patient has. If I come across that my patient has no home to live in, I would need to collaborate or network with other health care disciplines and organizations to have a safe livable home, apartment, shelter, or nursing facility if the patient accepts this living accommodation. The social worker would assist the nurse with making housing arrangements, and the nurse would gather further information about the patient's economic status and if food insecurities are present. Understanding of what caused the patient homelessness and the patient education status to provide additional resources to meet the patient holistic needs, this type of social justice for housing needs and possible food needs, employment, or disability assistance and education would be providing the nurse's skill set to accomplish the dismounting task to fulfill all the health care gaps this patient has, and one possible start would be resources that the employer has in progress for situations or scenarios just as this patient. Everyone has a right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing, medical care, necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age, or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control. I will advocate for social justice on the job by discussing the hardship for the vulnerable population at work with my team lead and manager upon following the work process. The ability to implement changes to promote health equity and social justice depend on and still depends on access to power and resources. I will provide a list of members that receive routine care for several medical problems and list concerns such as members who are underweight, collaborating food drives that will benefit the members' needs through nutritional supplements, and partner with stores to assist with supporting the community. This can be a biweekly or monthly basis. I would also gather information on local food banks and hospitals to assist with collaborating food securities for this population. Also, I would gather a list of what areas do not have grocery stores or farmer markets and check to see if delivery of food is available or what options are available for this population. I will make sure that the patient has the state-approved food benefits to also assist with food and securities per guidelines. The first example of social injustice that impacts a person and the population's health is the prison population wellness and disease prevention. Healthcare for prisoners should be provided by organizations independent of the penal institution to ensure that an equitable level of healthcare is provided and to prevent potential conflict of interest. Individuals that are in prison may not usually receive proper medical treatment and this could lead to the population health risk of increasing infections or spreading disease. The prison population requires social justice to bring adequate and safe healthcare practices to provide humane treatment to all people. I think that the appropriate core competency is population health. Population health includes population management through system thinking, including health promotion and illness prevention to achieve health, to achieve population health goals. Nurses play a critical role in advocating for, developing, and implementing policies that impact population health globally and locally. This core policy implements into practice would drastically change the health outcome for prisoners to have a quality of life and standard of care per evidence-based practice through managing the population health. I think disease management is the second example of social justice that I would have a profound impact in nursing quality of care. Evidence, using evidence-based methodologies, nurses lead innovative solutions to address complex health problems and ensure optimal care. Knowledge of financial and payment models relative to reimbursement and healthcare costs is essential. The population of patients with cognitive heart failure, asthma, hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, multiple sclerosis, osteoporosis, diabetes, degenerative disc disease, or glaucoma, to name some chronic health condition. This population requires routine examination, healthcare, diet protocol, education, and adherence to medications, lab analysis, imaging, specialist referral, and management. Quality self-care and possible nursing home health visits or telehealth visits to manage continuity of care and meeting the patient's needs. The slow progression, the slow disease progression on look of treatment and updated goals from each healthcare discipline are required to apply knowledge of systems to work effectively across the continuum of care. This completes my discussion of social justice and the impact of nursing within policymaking. Thank you.
