The speaker talks about the benefits of podcasts, how they can be used in classrooms, and the skills students can develop through podcasting. They mention that podcasts allow voices to be heard and different points of view to be shared. Skills such as writing, creativity, and self-confidence can be improved through podcasting. The speaker also discusses the various aspects involved in creating a podcast, such as music, collaboration, connections, and sponsorships. They express their interest in using podcasts in their own classroom, with themselves as the host and the students as guests. Overall, podcasts enhance the learning experience by providing different perspectives and promoting personal growth. Good morning, listeners. Thank you for being here. It is December 9th. It is a Friday. It's so exciting. The weekend is close. It is very cold outside today. It is 21 degrees out. I'm definitely going to be staying inside today. So thank you for being here today. We're just going to go over the importance of podcasts and how beneficial they can be in our own classrooms. So I just want to start out by saying that I'm someone who would choose to listen to a podcast over music. It is something that I really like to enjoy doing when I'm just sitting in the car, getting ready in the morning, or even when I'm working on homework. I have my top favorite podcast that I listen to, and I wait every week for a new episode to come out. It is such a great thing to be exposed to because it helps me grow and learn about certain topics, and it's such a nice thing that we have access to podcasts. To me, the purpose of podcasting is getting your voice out there and also making sure that our voices are being heard. So I have never created a podcast before, but this is just my take on it. I think there are some very hot topics that get brought up when doing podcasts, depending on the type of podcast it is. So I think it's just great because we learn different points of view, and it's just exciting. So to me, podcasting is super individualized because based on who is podcasting, they get to decide what they want to share to their listeners. While the podcaster gets to decide and chooses the topic of what they are talking about, their podcast is based on what they work on or what they want to share to their audience to keep them involved and interested. So when I researched podcasts online, I discovered how beneficial podcasts are, and it's so crazy how many benefits that podcasters or hosts receive when they have a podcast or when they're speaking to an audience. Some of the skills that I noticed, and that may be beneficial to a student for an elementary or secondary classroom, would be allowing their voice to be heard and really round out their thoughts. Looking at podcasting and the whole picture, you know some people may be able to just hop on and turn on their microphone, but some people may not be able to do that. It's not easy just hopping on and going straight to the recording device and speaking your thoughts. Some students may need to practice their skills and write out what they want to talk about, write out their intro, their body, their conclusion, write out the message they're trying to send. So an example is that these students also get to work on their writing skills. By working on their writing skills, they are boosting their self-confidence, they can practice a few extra times, and they really feel the way that they want to grab their audience. Students also will be challenging their creativity skills when they're hosting a podcast or being a guest on a podcast. Students also may want to incorporate sound in their podcast, or they might want to include an intro jingle. I know every single podcast I listen to, there's always an intro jingle or intro song. So it's very interesting, I think there's so many ways that students can benefit from creating a podcast, and it's super important to give them that exposure. Students also need to be creative in how long their podcast is going to be, or what the introduction with the body and the conclusion, I already talked about this, or deciding the message that they're trying to send. There's a lot of things that go into podcasts that I didn't realize as a listener. I know that ever since I started listening to podcasts, I've never thought about these things. Who creates the music? Who are they collaborating with? How do they collaborate? How do they make those connections? How do they get out to the community? It's so interesting. How do they gain the advertisement or sponsorships? There's a lot that goes into podcasts. So for me, if I were to ever use a podcast in my classroom, which I hope to do someday, because after doing my research, I just now see how beneficial it is, I would more than likely be the host of the podcast. When it comes to choosing a name or doing things like that, I would have my students help me with that. I think every school year, maybe I would do something a little bit different, but I would be the host, and then my students would be the guests. They would have to pick from a list of topics that I create that are school-appropriate to research, and then practice if they need. Then we would have time in class to record. I think it's just so much better than talking in front of a whole group of people. It gives my students the option to be creative in what they want to do. It's super exciting. Just by practicing these skills, my students will receive major benefits, especially in their future when they are super nervous for a job interview. They will have these skills to talk through it. It's super important. To me, podcasting enhances learning experience because through podcasts we learn so many things, and we learn so many different points of view. I think that is so important. We hear how to be better, how to do better, and we can do what we can do to help others.
