The speaker discusses the impact of climate change on the Great Lakes region, particularly in Michigan. They mention how changing temperatures lead to higher precipitation and less snow cover, disrupting ecosystems and human activities like the shipping season. While this may benefit some businesses, it also poses challenges for aquatic life and the environment. The speaker emphasizes the importance of balancing economic interests with protecting the health of the ecosystems in the Great Lakes. Okay, thank you. I'll start. How is climate change affecting the Great Lakes? Yeah, so we're in a really unique position, given that we're in Michigan, we have all the Great Lakes. In terms of that, we have a lot of difference towards food crops, pollution, and things like that, and then when you factor in climate change, we're seeing more and more temperatures, which leads to higher precipitation and less snow cover. What that does is it disrupts a lot of the regular cycles that, you know, some of the fish and the other aquatic life are used to when it comes to, you know, the Grand River and also the Great Lakes as well, especially in Michigan. So then on the other side of things, when you look at human activities, things like the shipping season for different producers, that is also being disrupted, which can be a benefit or a disbenefit to some of these businesses, but they're having more time, and they're going to have to adjust to this season of having more water to work with, basically, because there's not as much snow cover. So then, you know, it's probably good for business, but it's also good for our Great Lakes and them. Yeah, I think, yeah, it's hard to balance, like, what's more important. Yeah. I always lean towards the health of the ecosystems and the lakes, I know that's a big length of me. Yeah.
