West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue have spoke out on Fire Safety Week, warning the people of Leeds about protecting themselves with firework time quickly approaching. Checking smoke detectors and taking other precautions like staying a safe distance away from fireworks are part of the message. Naomi Hurst, the District Prevention Manager, says some people don't have smoke detectors. Any new-build property that should have it, because building regulations now say there's certain levels of rework to do to a property that requires you to fit them, but if you've got an older property, over time those detectors you may have had at some point may have stopped working and you just never bothered to replace them. Plans to transform the derelict pub The Elder of Lyon into a McDonald's have caused quite a stir among locals. The 262-year-old pub, located in the east of Leeds, has become a hotspot for crime since its closure in 2021. A public consultation on the plans will run until the 14th of October. Elia Lipinska has lived behind the pub for almost six years and says she wouldn't have moved into the house if she knew there was a McDonald's behind it. Obviously we don't want it, because it's nice, peace and quiet here. If they're going to agree to build a McDonald's, it's going to cause lots of noise at ridiculous hours, the delivery is going to be smelly all the time, so generally it's a big no. Community centres are supporting people all over Leeds who have nowhere else to turn, but rising costs and low funding is making their great work harder to complete. Abdul Hernan runs the Cardigan Road Community Centre and spoke about how much more needs to come from local authorities to support the work being done. We need people to recognise the work that we do and we need more strong government policies that direct resources and the appropriate funding so that we can support the people that we need to serve.
