The core previously holding Burger King and Subway will now turn into luxury student accommodation. Councillor Tim Goodall for Hyde Park and Headingley says student accommodation has gone up massively. Many houses that used to be non-students, long-term residents, became student households and it started causing lots of difficulties. So the council has really encouraged building accommodation in the city centre to alleviate the pressure in Headingley and Hyde Park. A record number of people have been hospitalised from a rare skin disease. Scabies, the nicknamed Victorian and Pirate's disease, is at an all-time high in Leeds. Experts believe the vaccination rate and poverty rates are behind the surge. Leeds Civic Trust have honoured the late visionary dance teacher Nadine Senior MB with a blue plaque. She rose to fame in Leeds for her philosophy of accessible dance when in 1985 she founded the Northern Dance School of Contemporary Dance. The school remains the only place to offer higher education for dance training in England outside of London and it remains the only school of its type in the public sector. A medieval hall has reopened its doors in a West Leeds suburb. This weekend saw the 800-year-old hall finally restored after receiving a £1.7 million grant from the Landmark Trust. Project Engagement Officer Hannah Thompson thoroughly enjoyed her time piecing the history back together. A visually impaired man voices his concerns about the hazards he has a heart to face while navigating his way around Leeds City Station. The £46.1 million development is not due to be completed until 2026. He urges for better accessibility features to ensure safer travel for individuals in similar circumstances to himself. A clean-up operation on a 36,000-year-old mammoth tusk is underway at Leeds Discovery Centre. The tusk was found in Temple Newsome in the 1960s and is a key part of Leeds' prehistoric history. It is an incredible reminder of the animals that once roamed in West Yorkshire tundra. Doing Good Leeds have paired up with BID Sensory Services to offer Leeds residents a free drop-in session. Starting on Wednesday 9 October, the session will take place on a weekly basis at the Caring Together premises in Woodhouse. You have to be 18 years old to attend and have a disability. Fewer people are eating fruit amongst families and young people across the UK. That's according to the local Authority Caterers Association which provides school meals across England. 30% of parents say their children are eating less fruit compared to last year.
