Chemistry concepts like aggression, motivation, and serotonin impact the outcome of physical fights. Aggression is caused by negative emotions and neurotransmitters. Motivation is influenced by the brain's reward system and dopamine levels. Serotonin, stored in the brain and gut, regulates mood and bodily functions. In this article, there are a few chemistry-related concepts that are necessary to know about in order to fully understand the experiment. Each concept has an impact on the outcome of a physical fight. The first is aggression. Aggression is the intent to cause harm or dominate. It is caused by negative emotions as well as neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters carry chemical signals from a nerve cell to the next target cell. Lack of serotonin causes aggression as well. Next is motivation, the brain chemical that gets you moving and gives you the desire to get things done as well as act on your desires or fears. Motivation is impacted by your brain's reward system. Your brain's reward system influences the levels of dopamine, a hormone and neurotransmitter that drives motivation in your body. Lastly, we have serotonin. Similar to motivation, serotonin is known as a feel-good chemical. This neurotransmitter is responsible for many bodily functions such as mood regulation, sleep quality, and digestion. It helps you feel calm, happy, and emotionally focused, which is likely why it impacted the outcome of the fight between the flies the way that it did. Fun fact, only 10% of the body's serotonin is stored in the brain, while the other 90% is stored in the gut.
