Prisons and jails are being used as mental institutions due to the lack of mental health care. Mindful Transformations and NAMI's Help Not Handcuffs are advocating for changes in the justice system to address this issue. People with mental health issues should be in a mental health system, not the justice system. Stereotypes that associate mental health issues with criminal behavior are incorrect. Many individuals released from mental health institutions end up homeless and are more likely to be incarcerated. The next episode will further discuss whether or not people with mental health issues should be placed in the justice system when prevention is possible. Hello. Today we are talking about prisons and jails being used as mental institutions. It is an important topic because we are more and more seeing the lack of mental health care and a rise in incarcerated people. Today we are going to talk about mindful transformations, the social advocacy group, people trying to make a change in the mental health care field when it comes to the justice system. They want to bring awareness and make changes. NAMI's Help Not Handcuffs discusses the issues at hand about the sheer number of people with mental health issues that are being incarcerated. They don't belong in a justice system, they belong in a mental health system. What can we do to make changes and put blocks in so that these people don't end up in a justice system? The major stereotypes with this issue is that people with mental health issues automatically are assumed to be more aggressive and therefore criminals. Most people think that these two things are synonymous and they are completely different issues. Most people that were liberated from mental health institutions as they were closing them down went on to be homeless and therefore are more likely to be incarcerated because of living and environmental conditions and survival. In our next episode we will be discussing the same issue and whether or not you think that people with mental health issues being put in the justice system when they could have been prevented. Thanks for listening today.
