The conversation revolves around the rising trend of ultra-skinny appearances, influenced by social media and celebrities like the Kardashians. The speakers discuss how this trend impacts body image, daily habits, and conversations about dieting among young girls. They also touch on the complexities of body comparison and eating disorders, emphasizing the importance of mental well-being and individual body differences. Overall, they reflect on the pressures and challenges young people face in relation to body image and self-acceptance. Hi Vanessa, thanks for chatting with me. Hi Katie. So, they were talking about the whole ultra-skin trend that's been coming up. When did you first notice the whole Ozempic, everyone's getting really skinny? Have you noticed that at all? Yeah, I definitely noticed it. I would say I noticed it a year or two ago. Definitely, I think the most telling part was seeing the Kardashians become skinny all of a sudden. That was probably when it started, I feel like. Yeah, definitely. And, per social media, like on TikTok, I know people be like, what I eat a day, and then all these sort of diets, like Instagram, everyone's photoshopping their pictures. Has that influenced how you feel about your body, or have you noticed other girls kind of getting influenced by that? Yeah, completely. I feel like when I was in early years of high school, and TikTok wasn't even as big and stuff, I honestly didn't see a problem with my body in any way. I just felt like I was fit, and that was fine. But now I feel, oh, I'm not skinny enough in this arm, or I'm built different than these girls on TikTok, because everyone's just showing off their body constantly all day long, so it's just a weird switch. Yeah, definitely. And has this whole thing kind of changed how you have your daily habits of exercise or eating? Yeah, definitely. I mean, I watch out what I'm eating more, I think, more consciously. I mean, especially coming out of high school and not playing sports anymore, so I'm not working out as much, I do need to watch what I eat now, and not to a dangerous point, just like, oh, I probably don't need that cookie. I never used to be like that. Yeah. And do you ever talk about dieting, or working out, or wanting to lose weight with your friends? I know Halloween's coming up, that's a big thing for young girls. Yeah, definitely. I mean, I feel we all kind of feel the same about it. I mean, we always feel not skinny enough, even if we're at a skinny point, always trying to find a new way to feel better about ourselves. It's hard for some to binge eat and then feel bad about yourself, but we definitely do talk about, oh, what do you do to stay in shape? Yeah. And do you think it's cool being really skinny is a trend on campus, or do you think a lot of students kind of ignore it? I'm not sure I'd be able to tell. It's hard to know because we haven't known these people that long. I feel like talking and becoming friends with people, some people were bigger in high school and got eating disorders here, and I would have had no idea if I never talked to them. So it's kind of hard to tell because we haven't known them that long, but I'm sure it is. I mean, right now people are either gaining a lot of weight because they're excessively drinking, or they're losing a lot of weight because they're the first time away from their parents, and they can control what they do, so it just depends. Yeah. And is there anything that you wish people kind of knew about how eating disorders wanted to have a certain level of impact on their daily lives? If I wanted them to know something, probably that it's all a mental thing. You probably aren't as big or whatever as you think you are. Also, everyone's built differently, so you shouldn't compare yourself to me. I'm 5'3", and I can't compare myself to people who are 5'10 and really skinny. I'm just not built the same as them. Our weight's going to distribute differently. So I would say that's important for people to understand. Yeah, definitely. Well, thank you for talking to me today. Well, thank you for having me, Katie.
