A study in 2022 used Raman imaging to detect microplastics and nanoplastics from non-stick cookware. The experiment found that millions of microplastics can be released during cooking. There is limited research on the effects of ingesting Teflon, but gases released from Teflon can cause respiratory issues and other health problems. Teflon may also contribute to inflammation, thyroid hormone abnormalities, and impaired immune function. A study conducted by Liu et al. in 2022 used Raman imaging to identify Teflon microplastics and nanoplastics released from non-stick cookware. Raman imaging is a technique that generates images with spectral and spatial information, according to BC 2023. The experiment estimates that up to millions of microplastics were released during a mimicked cooking process. Despite Teflon being around for so long, there is not a lot of research regarding the effects of Teflon when ingested. There wasn't much concern regarding the toxicity of Teflon until recently. However, Saeed and Ilyan, 2017, found that the gases released from PTFE can cause respiratory issues like shortness of breath, chest pain, and even acute pulmonary edema, which can be fatal. According to the Amos Institute, Teflon can contribute to inflammation, thyroid hormone abnormalities, and impaired immune function.
