BPA

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a commonly used chemical found in can linings and plastics. Over 6 billion pounds of BPA are produced each year. It can be found in baby bottles, food storage containers, receipts, canned goods, and single-use plastics. A study showed that 63 out of 105 food samples contained trace amounts of BPA. BPA is associated with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and male sexual dysfunction. It can mimic estrogen and affect hormone receptors, which is why it is considered toxic. Beyond Teflon and PFAs, another commonly used chemical is Bisphenol A, or BPA. BPA is used in can linings and polycarbonate plastics. According to Peacock 2023, over 6 billion pounds of BPA are produced annually. Traces of BPA can be found in baby bottles, food storage containers, paper receipts, canned goods, and single-use plastics. Schechter et al. 2010 tested BPA levels in 105 plastic-wrapped fresh and canned foods. They found that 63 of those 105 samples contained trace amounts of BPA. This study finds that BPA is associated with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and male sexual dysfunction. A meta-analysis from Lin et al. 2023 finds that BPA can exhibit estrogenic activity and affect estrogen and thyroid hormone receptors. These factors are the reason it is considered a toxic chemical.
