Mr. Work is the choir and band director at Platt Smith High School. He is also the head of the school's crisis response team. The theater program at the school has been struggling, but they now have a speech program that is gaining popularity. Mr. Work is proud of his show choir, which has been successful in competitions. They change their show every year, and this year's theme is World War II. Mr. Work feels a lot of pressure in his role, but finds support from his family and enjoys sharing a beer with friends. Welcome back to a new episode of Shed Talk, and we're joined by Justice, Tim, Derek, and me, Kyler, and we're joined by esteemed guest, Mr. Work. Hi. So, Mr. Work, Chris, can I call you that? Yes, please. You are, what do you do at Platt Smith, Platt Smith High School? So, I do a couple things at Platt Smith. So, I'm primarily the choir director right now, and then I also stepped into the band director role, so I'm kind of doing both things right now. And then I'm also the head of our crisis team, our school's response team, so when a student passes away, it's kind of my job to coordinate counseling and things for that. So, we got activated once this year with Evan's passing, and so that's a lot, but it's nice to be able to know that we've got a group and community willing to help and support in those kinds of times, and I like being kind of in that role. So, yeah. Did you do a lot of shows for Platt Smith in the theater and all that? So, I stopped doing the theater stuff when I took over the band portion of everything, so that moved to Jeremy Houk, who was the previous band director. But before that, we weren't really doing a lot of theatrical performances the last three or four years because we just didn't have a teacher. And then Tyler Orvis was in the role before me as far as the theater, and he was trying to keep something afloat, but just for whatever reason, it just never seemed to take hold. And then now we have this burgeoning, I don't even know if that's the right word, but speech program, and all these kids are like, I want to do theater. And so, it's just interesting. I don't think that ever went away, that desire for theater, but for some reason, it just wasn't as present as maybe we wanted it to be. Before Tyler left, when we had an accompanist, people who play piano and support choirs, we had award-winning musicals from Nebraska High School Musical Theater Awards. And we were doing really great things, and it's just such a shame that we aren't able to keep those things going anymore. So, that's a long way to answer your question. Yeah. No. But you had your choir performances, those shows. Oh, absolutely, yeah. So, we have the show choir, which I changed the name to Out of the Blue, and we've got a competition this Saturday, which I love not having school today. That's a lie, because I wanted one more rehearsal before we get going on that. But yeah, we do four concerts a year, and then my show choir goes to five different competitions. And then, on March 7th, we're doing a tour with our show choir and going out to the elementary school, St. John, and then the middle school. So, I'm really excited about that opportunity. That's fun. Mm-hmm. It seems like that show choir has taken a lot of hold. Like, I was there last year when you guys won your first trophy, or made the first finals. Yeah. But it seems like it's kind of taken off a little bit as well, and like you said, the speech program. Do you look at some of the things that you're in charge of, and when they start kind of just trending upwards, how does that make you feel, a sense of pride? Yeah, I would love to say that it doesn't make me feel any more or less successful, but that would be a lie. I feel really successful when my programs are doing well. I wish I could separate that sense of myself, because there's a negative to that as well, which is like when they're not doing as well, you kind of take that shoulder, that burden on yourself. But yeah, absolutely, when things are going really well, man, it's like a drug. I tell kids, like, music's my drug. And like, I get goosebumps, I get shaky, I get all this kind of stuff. Like, I love performing arts, and so when they're doing well and they're trending up, that just makes me really excited about the future and how things are going. What was going through your head last year at the tournament in Lincoln, when they're lifting down the schools that made the finals, and they went down to the last one? Yeah. And they waited, and then they said class is missed. My head was, please be us, please be us, please be us. I even had my fingers crossed. I know the people listening can't see, but my middle finger and forefinger were crossed. Just really, really hoping that we could beat out Blair. And we didn't. Blair ended up making it in, but it was one of those where we beat another school and we were able to make it in. It just felt like something I'd worked for for like five or six years. And the opportunities that our school has aren't everywhere, but in the show choir world, we don't have a lot of opportunities. So for a small school like us and a show choir of really only like 25 kids to make finals at a competition in Lincoln is huge. So it felt like the culmination of something. Yeah, I think that's it. That was such an awesome experience. Yeah. Yeah, it's all the work. Like I'm getting goosebumps just thinking about it right now. Like that feeling doesn't leave you. That feeling of like working hard and achieving something you've worked so hard for is really cool. Now you guys do like a different performance each year, right? Yeah, so we change the show every year. So last year the idea was like the villain in each one of us and how we can embrace that or kind of reject it. But it was really just a lot of songs about being bad. Like I get really into these themes and a lot of people don't. But this year's show is about World War II and kind of getting into and out of World War II. And so we've got radio announcements of like the bombing of Pearl Harbor. And I wish I was way better at social studies and I could tell you all these people's names. But just different historical speeches are present in between our numbers. Kind of helping the audience understand where we're at. Trying to use modern music and classical jazz music that was really popular in the 1930s to start. And in fact, we're doing something really interesting in the show, Fireworld. We're putting our band on stage and having them play and dance at the same time, which I've only seen one group do before. So it'll be really interesting to see how judges and audiences react to that. So yeah, I'm really excited about this. And we've got a good group of kids. Really strong vocalists this year, which I'm really excited about. Which one's been your favorite though? Oh gosh, now you're going to get me in trouble. Okay, so I have top two. And I refuse to separate these two. And I'm so sorry. Last year was one of the top two. And I think just with the achievement, but also how well the kids got along with each other. And how hard they worked. We had so many new members last year who were in during advisory. And we had so many senior guys who just came out for show choir for the very first time. And just really did so well. It was a shame to lose them. And then the other one was in 2020. Literally the day before Plasmid fled out for COVID, we were 0.5 points away from making finals. And it was called the Friendship Show. But everyone who watched it just called it the Bungee Show. Because we danced with three 40-foot bungee cords, pretty much the whole show. And the bungee cords were representing family. And so when you were holding on to the bungee cord, you were holding family. But when you stretched it, it showed the tension that exists between family members. And we had moments where we were stressed and pulling apart. And then we had moments where people let go. And stuff like that. And then there were many bungees that we pulled out at different points. And there's a song called Me and My Gang is how the show ended. And my drummer, God bless his heart, went about 20 clicks too fast. So that song is like, me and my gang, we live to ride. Here's how fast it went. Me and my gang, we live to ride. We ride to live. And when they're doing country swing and country line dance kicks, those kids were rocking. And they were gassed by the end of it. But you could just see it on their faces. They knew they had done a performance that they don't think they were ever going to be able to repeat. And it was such a shame that we were 0.5 points away. But I was just really proud of those kids. And I firmly believe that if COVID hadn't happened and we were able to do some home performances, that would have been the ramp that I think the program is seeing right now is just that propelling. Because we never got to do a home performance in that show. So obviously when it comes to these things, there's a lot of pressure and stuff put onto you. Because you're in charge of so much. Like the routines, the themes, everything. Does that stress ever get to you? You know you really want to succeed. Does that ever get really stressful? Absolutely, yeah. So two things help with that. Family and beer. So one of my big passions is beer. I'm not going to hide that from anyone. I think anyone even at the high school, my students know that that's a big thing for me. But just sharing a beer with people or sharing food with people I think is great. And so that's just kind of my thing. But the other thing is just family. I'm really close to my family. I didn't think so growing up. So I came from an abusive background where my dad was physically abusive. But just through things in my life, my dad and I have strengthened our relationship and things have changed. And now he's one of my biggest supporters. In fact, he sings in one of my choirs that I do outside of school. But yeah, that stress totally gets to me. And I'm really fortunate that I have a lot of friends in the school that are teachers. Or students that step up and try and help out where they can. And right now we've got a group of parents that are literally just doing our costumes for me right now. Because I'm like, I don't have time. Like, I just don't. And there's a grandma in there. She's been in our room I think over 28 hours just sewing. Like, this woman is so amazing to me. She's just like, and she's happy to do it too. She's just happily donating her time. Just through the support of others and kids being excited about things gets me excited. And having that achievement last year really tried to help propel me moving forward. And then finally, I would say I guess there's a third thing is my sense of do it because it's hard. So like, I talked about how much those kids worked hard and they achieved. And that's what I like about show choir is kids have to work hard. None of those kids walking in there their first year are any good at dancing or singing particularly well in the show choir style. It's a style of singing and dancing all the time. And so everyone kind of starts at close to two on a ten point scale. And at the end, you're where you end up. And so I like that competitive aspect. Like, I'm not allowed to play Monopoly in my house anymore because I'm really competitive. But that drive, I think, really helps too. So that's a long-winded answer, but we're on a podcast. When you think of your themes for your shows, when do those ideas come about? So I normally I try and find things that I think my students can really benefit from. Like ideas or themes that I think would be interesting to them. But last year, Villains was a show that I found that I just really liked the music of. I didn't find the theme to be particularly interesting, but I thought costuming could be a lot of fun. And with the kids that we had, I didn't feel like a major theme was really needed. This year's theme actually came from my assistant director named Becky Thompson. And we were just putting together songs. And I told my students this at first. I'm like, I don't want a theme next year. I just want to pick five or six songs that we really like, and then we'll just go with it. So we found a couple songs that we really liked. In fact, our opener, Sing, Sing, Sing, which is a 1930s swing tune. It's about four or five minutes long. The original recording is ten minutes long, so we cut it down quite a bit. But we found that, and we're like, oh, what if we did a 1920s stock market show? And we kind of talked about how we could talk about those elements and the modern economic things that are going on right now. And the longer we put it together, the more we researched, the more we realized that Sing, Sing, Sing, actually, while we associated with the 1920s, actually came out of the 1930s. And so then we started looking at the songs that we had picked. And we were like, there's a struggle here. Like, there's a story of a struggle here. And so she's like, what if we did World War II? And we only swapped one song in that whole set to make it work, and it was our ballad. We swapped out a song called Never Give Up for a song called Letters from War. And it's about a prisoner of war who finally gets to come home to his mom. And it's really emotional, and that's what I'm hoping. I'm hoping we can make people cry. I guess that'll give us points. What is, like, the pointing system? Yeah, so to be honest with you, I'm not super, super familiar with it. Like, I just think of the rubric, kind of how we're graded, in three different categories. So there's a category for, like, dance and visuals. And then there's a category for vocals and music. And then there's a category for band in general, in fact. So, like, vocals and music, you're graded on, like, how well you sing overall. Does each song's style stand out? So if, like, you sing a rock song one time and then a country song the next time, do they sound exactly the same, or do they sound different like they're supposed to? And every Show Choir show is kind of composed of, like, three or four different styles of music. So you should be able to tell when you're listening what style of music that they're doing, whether that's with instrumentation, like the changing of the band instruments, some rhythmic elements, or just simple, like, with a vocalist, how are they producing the sound? Is it bright and brassy, kind of like your pop songs? Or is it kind of more, ah, you know, that villain, kind of bright, harsh sound? And then you have your ballad, which is kind of more your classical choral tone, dark kind of sound. So as you go along, they're also grading on, like, how well they can understand you. It's called diction. Balance, can you hear all the parts that you're supposed to? Blend, are there individual voices sticking out? And then they kind of have visual ideas for all of those as well. So, like, you get points for how well your costumes match your show. You get points for, like, how fast you can do a move and how, what we call, clean it is. So how making sure everyone's doing it at the same time, and how often are there issues? And are those issues consistent? Another thing is called blocking. In show choir, we stay in the same spot for maybe 45 seconds before we change where we're standing on stage, all while doing choreography at the same time. And so the last thing is that the really big thing is what's called dance break energy, and it's what I always try and shoot for really high. And it's, in a show choir show, you're singing and dancing, but there are moments where if you stop singing and you just dance as hard as you can. I tell my students a phrase that I got from our original choreographer, Kyle Aiden. He goes, clap for me, damn it, has to be your motto. And it can't be a clap for me, please. It has to be clap for me, damn it. It is a, you have to clap for me because I'm dancing that hard. So, like, dance through the floor, through the ceiling, that kind of idea. And so that's something that I always really, really try and shoot for. And then the last category is kind of like your overall show design. Like, do the judges get it, what you're trying to do? And then the last one is kind of like how your band performs. So, like, that's another part of the show choir thing that a lot of people don't realize is someone has to rehearse that band. So, like, we have an eight-person band behind the stage. I'm there, I, like, ever since October I've been rehearsing on Tuesdays and Thursdays with this band for an hour after school, in addition to, you know, everything else that I've got going on. And, like, just to plug them real fast, they're like, we didn't have school today. They said we have a group text message about, we didn't have school today. We're going to have rehearsal tomorrow at, you know, at 3 p.m. And everyone's like, I'm in. And, like, it's so cool that, like, they're not the front and center people, but they want to be successful just as much. And so, like, they scheduled a rehearsal without me. And it's like, that's the kind of thing that makes me so excited about doing stuff like this. Like, that ownership and that, like, no, we're just going to do this. So, I know that was a long-winded answer for things, but once again, we're on a podcast. It's really interesting to talk about the rubric and the themes. Yeah. Like, it's just interesting, as I've been to my fair share of my junior and senior year, I went to a couple of them, a couple of concerts and stuff. But it's interesting to see how much goes into it. Like, at the face value, you could go and say, oh, they're singing and dancing. Like, you talked about the family theme, and, like, there's just so much more meaning, and not just meaning, but the time that is put in by, like you said, just the people that are front and center and the people that are in the back. And it's kind of inspiring to see such a big group of people that, like, and like you said, even people like the grandma you talked about who's putting in time. Like, it's just so many people that are passionate about one thing that's not quite as popular as some things. Like, you see in the Midwest, like, football is really big, and they're really big into sports, but things like show choir go overlooked. So, as a part of the Platinum community, it's really cool to see, like, such a big group of people come together and be really passionate about something that's kind of overlooked. Well, thanks, man. I appreciate it. Yeah, I think the community is really starting to get behind it, at least in our fundraising efforts. We can tell that more and more people are aware of what's going on. And we're trying to get more social media out there, so we just are trying to find more people and to let more people know what we're doing. So, two students, Gertie Yoder and Ivy Schmidt, started an Instagram account called Out of the Blue Show Choir, and so they started putting stuff on there. It saved me a couple of times. Mm-hmm. My marketing, all my projects. It's phenomenal. I'm, like, it's free, and, like, I pay for it because I just want to use, like, you know, updated templates and stuff like that. But I don't have to put a lot of work in once I find something I like. It's just change it for what you want, so. I would use the tiny ones. You can't see the watermark on them. I can hide it. Oh, there you go. That's solid. Yeah. What kind of, like, started you on this music path? Oh, I don't know. I was good at it. Like, I know that's the dumb answer, but it's the truth. But it's the truth. Like, if you, if someone kind of pushes you when you're young and you're good at something, I think we stick with that. Mm-hmm. And that's why I think middle school teachers are so important is because, you know, by middle school you're trying stuff, but by high school you pretty much decided what you're going to do. And, like, I talked about the seniors who joined us, you know, that senior year. They've had a lot of confidence because that senior year they've, I mean, what are they going to do? Like, you know, ostracize it. You already have your friend groups, everything set, you know. And so, you know, I just, for me it was, I started out in church. So I grew up going to a bunch of different churches here in town, but we ended up kind of staying at the Presbyterian Church here in town, here in Plattsmouth. And they asked me if I wanted to be a part of their choir when I was in middle school. And I was doing choir in middle school, but, you know, that's really where I got my foundation. And I think back to some of my best singers, and most of my best singers have been involved in church in some way. And I think it's just because they're singing in church every Sunday, and they're just practicing that skill and that part of that. So, and then I had a phenomenal middle school and elementary, sorry, middle school and high school teacher named Jennifer Orbis, and I owe her so, so, so much in my life. Not just as a vocalist, but as a young man. She was very, very formative. And that's Tyler Orbis's wife, the former theater teacher. She still, I can't talk highly enough about her, but she still has this amazing quality that I'll never be able to duplicate. But she has this quality about her that makes you feel immediately comfortable around her. She has this, like, I call it the mom effect. She just like, when she's around, you feel so comfortable. Like, I remember as a young man, I called her mom on accident a couple times. And in my brain, I was like, is this on accident, or does she really feel like a second mom? You know, like, you know, she caught me smoking once and like yelled at me for like, I would say a solid 15 minutes. And I stopped smoking because that was, like, I did not want her to be disappointed in me. And so, like, that's kind of what got me started. And like, it's funny, but I'm so into show choir now. Because when I went to college, I went to college, Hastings College in Hastings, Nebraska. And there's a really, really great show choir program called GISH, Grand Island Senior High School. And they had an amazing program. I mean, it cost, at that time, it would cost like $600 to be a part of their group. They were traveling all over the Midwest and this stuff. And we would constantly, as music majors, make fun of them. Like, all of their best kids did their show choir. And like, they didn't take the top ensemble or whatever. Like, the school kind of sold out the choral program for show choir. And I was like, I am never doing that, ever. Like, that's just, why would you do that? You're so, like, you're cheapening the experience of music making. And then I had to do a show choir as part of my program here. And for three years, I did it. And I was like, this just sucks. Like, not that the kids weren't great or whatever. But it was just like that competitive drive of me wasn't fulfilled. And like, there was no way of knowing if we were getting better year from year. Because there was no rubric. There was no score. There was nothing like that. And so I went to a camp for teachers called Show Choir Camps of America. And I just like, I want to get better at this thing. I want to understand what this thing is. And then I realized that it is a circus. Show choir is nuts. And I fell in love with it immediately. They made us do a show choir show. Like, we learned a whole show choir show in two days. So, a 16-minute show in two days. And we had to do the choreography. I remember staying up until like 2 a.m. practicing choreo. And I got stuck in the back. And God bless it because they put me up front. It was going to be embarrassing. But I realized how hard what my students were doing is. And I had a newfound appreciation for it. And like, I learned so much about myself during those times of just working hard. That I'm like, my students need this as much as I do. And now, I'm like, thinking about leaving Plasmid and trying to find a job that has more show choir opportunities. And so, there are a couple jobs open right now that I'm looking at. I haven't applied anywhere yet. But I'm like, I'm looking at that earnestly and going, is that something that you want for yourself? Is that the next step? So, just kind of looking at that. A little backtracking, but with Miss Orvis, I felt the same way about Mr. Orvis, too. Yeah, he has a way to look past, I think, a lot of the outward stuff about people and has a way of making you feel like it's okay to have an opinion around him, even if he disagrees. Like, he has this crassness about him, too. Like, he'll make fun of you, kind of jab at you when he gets to know you. But he has a perspective, because he's not so much into the technology. Like, he didn't even have a cell phone until the last two years of him teaching at Plasmid. Like, he refused to have one. So, he just talked about how important relationships were. And I think you could see that in his relationship with his students. Yeah. But it's cool that you kind of had a little bit of that experience, as well. No, he was awesome. Yeah. What are you doing right now? You know, I've inquired about that, but I haven't found out much. I know his wife still works for a company called Travel with Barb, and that's a school travel company that works with schools to travel to, like, different locations. So, like, when the choir and band program went to Nashville, we did it through them. And Jen is very good in that role. Does Julie work with them? I think she's mentioned something about that. She may very well. So, what they try and do is they hire teachers to try and, like, lead trips, because teachers often understand what other teachers need in those moments. And so, like, all of their chaperones and stuff that they send with different groups are all teachers. And so, when they have a music group, they like to send a music teacher with them and stuff like that. So, yeah, it's phenomenal. They have a really, really good program with what they're doing over there. Yeah. No. And they're so good at it. Like, they've got things prepackaged, prepriced for you, and they're honest and just genuine. Yeah. That intro to drama with Mr. Ormus was definitely my favorite question. Yeah? That was my favorite one. So, what did you like about it? Because I taught drama for a while, and I think some students really like it, but for different reasons. So, for you, why do you think that was your favorite? Because, like, the stuff we did, the, like, choreographing duels, and we got to, like, do little plays and that. Yeah. And I think doing that kind of is why I'm starting to do more of those classes in college now, just to kind of—because it was fun to do, and I want to keep doing it. Yeah. And, like, that performative element with the structure, to feel like it's not just do something, right? And that freedom to do what you want. Because we got to make our own stuff. Yeah. And then, but he was really good about—and this is what I tried to emulate when I was trying to, you know, follow his program was, how do we keep the things that were successful? And one of the things that was successful from him, like me watching him the very few times I was able to, he was giving really direct feedback. Like, he wasn't telling you what to do. He's like, have you thought about this? And then he just kind of walked away. And I loved that idea. He's like, he didn't tell you what you should or shouldn't do. He's just like, have you thought about this perspective or this character's background or things like that and incorporating that? And I really love that the freedom that, you know, theater provides kids. Because, like, we all played at some point. Like, we all did make-believe. And at some point, we just decided it wasn't cool anymore, which sucks. But it's one of those where it's just interesting. Like, it's such a big part of our culture. We go to the movies. We go, you know, see art shows. We see dances. We see musicals, all these things. Or you watch the Super Bowl halftime show. Like, why is that there? Well, there's a need for it. Like, we desire those things. Like, have you ever been to a sports game where everything's silent? No. They fill it with music. They fill it with art. They fill it with all these things. And so it's, like, just really interesting to hear that you're taking more art classes. Yeah. That's cool, man. I started taking, like, an intro to fun events as an acting class or something. Yeah.
