In creating this reduced orchestration of Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 3, I was careful not to change the important colors that are so characteristic of Mahler’s orchestration. To maintain integrity, I believe it is important to have all four trombones present. The five horn parts in my reduction reapportion the parts to also avoid the need for an assistant principal horn.
