北原白秋は新潟で童謡音楽会に招かれた。その際、佐渡島を一望できる寄居浜の荒涼とした物淋しい光景から着想を得てこの詩を書きあげた。作曲は中山晋平によるものと山田耕筰による２曲がある。この歌は中山晋平によるものを源田俊一郎が男声合唱曲に編曲したものである。 Kitahara Hakushu was invited to a children's song concert in Niigata.
