Montesa es el nombre de la orden militar aragonesa fundada en 1317 por bula del papa Juan XXII. Se instituyó oficialmente el 22 de julio de 1319 en una ceremonia sobre la que presidió el rey Jaume II (Jaime II) en el palacio real de Barcelona. Se eligió a la villa real de Montesa en Valencia como sede de la nueva institución, a la que se dotó de los bienes de la antigua orden de los templarios. Un concilio eclesiástico habÃa puesto fin a la orden del Temple en 1312.
