Talk: 19890525-Larry_Rosenberg-UNK-anapanasati_full_awareness_of_breath_series_tape_13-33816 Leandra Tejedor Start_time: 00:46:55 Display_question: Is mindfulness permanent? Keyword_search: mindfulness, arises/passes away, permanent, calm, objects, knowing Buddho, chitta, impermanence, enlightened Question_content: Larry: Do you mean mindfulness? Questioner: No. Well, does it mean something different to me? Larry: The mindfulness that we have accessible to us right now, is not permanent. Questioner: Right? Larry: In other words, it arises with objects. There's the objects, and mindfulness, arises, and passes away, at a staggering rate. Probably you won't see that, unless you do a retreat. Because on retreats, when the mind gets calm, you can see that object, and the knowing of it. But you could say that there is something permanent. Otherwise, impermanence wouldn't make any sense. But that's the end of the journey. And that is Buddho if you've ever heard that. That means, the one who knows. In other words, we all know to some degree. But the final development, it's the same mind, it's the same chitta. It's the same heart, except now when it's fully perfected, you could say that is outside of…it has nothing to do with being born or dying. And that's… a Buddha is called, one who's a fully enlightened one. The name that's given to a fully enlightened one is Buddho, the one who knows. Break_line: Okay, now the fulfillment of that… In other words, the final development of that, is a pure knowing, that is outside of time, and change, and all the rest of it. But for what we're working with, what's accessible to us, it's changeable in many obvious ways. Do you have the same level of mindfulness whenever you want it? It changes, Questioner: Lots. Larry: Yeah, lots. But you'll also see it's… that there's a pairwise, arising, and passing away. Object and knowing, object and knowing, object and knowing, object and knowing. But there is always some kind of knowing, and more and more, if you feel your practice is getting stronger, it feels like there's a steady knowingness there. And that's because… let's say if we think of it as moving picture frames, knowing, knowing, knowing. But at least the knowing is kind of pretty constant, even though they're instances of different, different instances of knowing. End_time: 00:48:56
