Talk: 19840920-Larry_Rosenberg-UNK-buddhas_ancient_med_path_a_modern_challenge_part_ii-1515 Leandra Tejedor Start_time: 01:24:30 Display_question: What is the connection between psychic phenomena and wisdom? Keyword_search: occult, power, wisdom, psychic phenomena, Americans, Buddha, levitation, happiness Question_content: Questioner: Questioner: I was looking in some books, five, volume seven. And so I just finished the first volume last night and I have lots of questions about it. About how people are transporting themselves. Larry: Okay, I know those volumes. That's more of the occult expression of it, which I be careful with that. This is just my opinion. It can be a real side trip. Maybe it's true, maybe it's not. But psychic phenomena have a place as well. However…wisdom, psychic phenomenon, and wisdom, are not the same thing. Here's a problem that we as… I feel… we Americans have, we can't tell the difference between power, and wisdom. We're starting to. Power is all those psychic phenomena, mental telepathy, out of body experiences…you tell me whatever you read in those books. Wisdom is much more unassuming. It's not as sexy in a way, it's not as commercially viable. It has to do with sanity. And we're much more interested in somebody reading someone's mind, than being sane, or genuinely humane. Break_line: And in the Buddha’s teachings, he… at one point was asked, the Buddha supposedly had full psychic powers, but never, very rarely used them. And someone asked him why he didn't teach some of these psychic things to his disciples. And he said, if I got people interested in this, they get lost in all of it, because it's so much more captivating, and seemingly valuable. And then they would get… it would divert their attention from something, that in one sense is much less romantic. It's the hard day to day work, of learning how to be sane, how to be…wisdom, the science of happiness, of how to live correctly, and fully, and I've seen it many, many times. People are much more interested in levitation. You know it's easier to take an elevator, but people are paying thousands of dollars to levitate. Break_line: Now, I know that that can be tricky. You can develop some important mind qualities, that can be useful for wisdom, in those kinds of training, but all too often, people get lost in it, as an end in itself. Read the books, see what they are. But eventually, my guess is, you won't have any real fulfillment in life, unless you come back to yourself. It's going to begin, and end, with you. How are you doing? These things can fill your imagination. People flying through the air, maybe it's true, walking over water, whatever they do, and it can make you feel, oh, I'm getting involved in a really exciting new realm. It will wear thin after a while, and you'll come back to just you there, in your underwear, and you know, sitting there, and you know, who am I? End_time: 01:27:39
