Lance Wright, discharged in Monterrey, Mexico following the end of the Mexican-American War, makes his way to Texas and then north to Mesilla where he is shot and wounded. He kills his assailant, is taken to a hotel, his wounds cared for by a doctor and nursed back to health by a young Mexican woman, Lorena Alvarez. She tells him the man who shot him was her violently abusive husband and by killing him he has set her free. They fall in love, are married and raise a family in historic Mesilla.
