A 12-bar theme is presented by the violas and immediately repeated by the violins one octave higher. A series of episodic materials follows until, after a climax, the theme returns in the violas, this time accompanied by the celli in pizzicati. When the violins take the theme again, it appears fully clothed in 4-part harmony, which is the end the whole composition was aiming at from the beginning.
