An expressive piece on the symmetric octatonic scale, which, in Messiaen's systematization of the "modes of limited transpositions", is called the second mode, or M2, which, in its turn, has two proper modes, the semitone-tone mode and the tone-semitone mode. This piece, then, is in the first mode of the symmetric octatonic scale or C- Db - Eb - E - F# - G - A - Bb. Enharmonics have no significance and are notated only to improve the reading.
