The person being interviewed gives consent for the interview to be recorded. They explain that they got involved with the Omega Phi Alpha National Service Sorority after seeing their recruitment schedule on Instagram. The recruitment process included an information session, submitting reasons for wanting to join, service nights, a yoga night, a speed dating night, and a bid day. The person joined because they wanted a college organization similar to one they were involved in during high school. Being a part of the sorority allows them to participate in leadership roles and community service, similar to what they did in high school. The organization has a president and other executive roles that run meetings and present social and service events. Some social events they have done include visiting a farm and carving pumpkins with baby goats. The person has made new friends through the sorority and appreciates the opportunity to do community service. The organization has done fundraising Okay, so before we begin, I just want to make sure I have your consent to record this interview and submit it to my professor. You have my consent. Okay, so I know that you're a member of Omega Phi Alpha National Service Sorority. Describe how you got involved with the sorority. So, I got involved with the sorority because they followed me on Instagram and they posted, like, their recruitment schedule and stuff, so I just decided to sign up. Describe what the recruitment process was like for you. So, first I just had, like, an information session and then we submitted just, like, reasons why we wanted to be in the organization. And then we had a service night where we were, like, putting together blankets for people. And then we had a yoga night and then a speed dating night where they just kind of interviewed us. And then we got invited back for, like, the bid day. You said that you had to list reasons why you wanted to join. What were some of your reasons? In high school, I was involved in a similar organization with, like, different leadership roles and a lot of volunteering hours. So, I wanted to find something similar to that, but in college. Now that you've been a part of the organization for a while, do you think that it kind of resembles some of the clubs that you would do in high school with, like, leadership roles and community service and stuff like that? Yeah, it definitely does because they have, like, the exec board with president, vice president, and treasurer and all that stuff. And then they also set up different volunteering opportunities for us to do. And then just little social events for us to do also, which is similar to what I did in high school. You said there's, like, a president role, exec, treasurer, that kind of thing. How does that impact the way the meetings are run? So, the president, like, she runs the meetings and then she invites, like, each exec role to come up and present a few PowerPoint slides. And, like, someone presents the next social events we're going to have and the service events we're going to have. So, that's how it's run. What are some of the social events that they tell you about during chapter? My favorite one we did was last semester when we went to go to this farm and feed different, like, animals, like goats and pigs and birds and stuff. And then we also got to carve a pumpkin with baby goats. Would you say that you met a lot of new friends through this group? Yeah, I've definitely met a few new friends through this group. So, how has it really impacted your life at UNC, like, with meeting people, seeing all the leadership roles, doing the events? Something that's really important to me is community service. So, I'm glad that I found a group where I can volunteer with them. But I've also met some really good friends through the organization. So, I'm also glad to have found friends and also do, like, service through the organization. So, what are some examples of service projects that you guys are in the works of or thinking about doing? So, in the past, we've done some different fundraising projects where we go sit in the pit and sell, like, different baked goods or bracelets or stuff to raise money for different organizations. And right now, our next event we have planned is the Project Life event where we're going to set up tables in the pit and get people to swab the inside of their cheek to get cells needed for medical research. And then the organization is also trying to figure out how we can help pet shelters either by walking dogs or just playing with the dogs or something like that. Describe a service project that would be really important to you personally because of your beliefs. Something that I would want to do is maybe a food drive and a toiletry drive, but specifically for a woman's shelter because I think, like, specifically women need feminine hygiene products that are expensive and hard to come by. And have you ever done anything like that in the past? In high school, I did. We collected the toiletries and then went to downtown Raleigh to a woman's shelter and handed them out. Okay. Well, thank you so much for the interview.
