The quaint village of Laurin was the location of the negotiation of the Virginia City Treaty of 1868. This is where Sacajawea’s people would have fateful interactions that would put the freedom-loving Shoshone into a dependent relationship with the federal government and greatly curtail their movements. Laurin was renamed for Jean Baptiste Laurin. The French Canadian was an experienced trader with American Indians who arrived by way of the Utah Territory. Laurin was a merchant and businessman.
