D - Camp Fortunate

A lush valley flows down from Lemhi Pass to meet the confluence of the Beaverhead River and Horse Prairie Creek at what Lewis and Clark named Camp Fortunate. The Shoshones knew this junction as a natural rest stop where they decided whether to travel east past present-day Dillon, Montana, and in doing so, skirt their route to their village site on Jack Creek—a tributary of the Madison River. From here they could also go south toward Lima and east toward Red Rock Lakes.
