Homeopathy with Heidi discusses post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and its impact on people's lives. Trauma can come from various sources, such as war, natural disasters, or personal experiences. Homeopathy offers a different approach than traditional medicine, focusing on finding the right remedy to help individuals process and release their trauma. The goal is not to erase the past, but to provide healing and a different perspective. Homeopathy aims to address both the emotional and physical manifestations of trauma. Men also open up and seek help for PTSD. Homeopaths provide a safe and confidential space for individuals to share their experiences. Empathy is important, but maintaining professional distance is necessary. Homeopathic remedies stimulate the body's natural healing abilities, eventually leading to a resolution of symptoms. The duration of treatment varies depending on the individual's needs. Well, hello and thank you once again for tuning in to my show Homeopathy with Heidi. You're here in the studio with me is Ken Morrison, the producer. Hi Ken. Hi Heidi. How are you doing? It's been a whole month since we spoke. How's it been going? Good? Yes, it has. I'm still not quite happy with the weather. It's still a bit cold and wintry, but... Pretty soon you'll be complaining that it's too hot though, you know. No, you've never heard me complain about the heat. You're right. No. What are we talking about today? Well, today I thought we'll talk about post-traumatic stress disorder, or in homeopathy, as we like to say, the never-been-well-since event. That's a heading that I would normally associate with the military. Are we talking about people from the military, or they've come back from wars, or are we talking about Joe Blow? Both. Yeah? Absolutely both. And the reason I thought I'd like to talk about this topic in the show is that almost everybody at some point in their life will suffer some form of trauma, emotional trauma, be it the grief and loss of a loved one, your mother at an early age, your father at an early age, a sibling, or your child. Or, I mean, just listen to the news every single day. Even that is traumatic, listening to the news. Some people would say, don't listen to the news, and it's just that simple. Yeah. Is it that simple? Well, I guess it's a matter of choice. I do want to be informed, so I will continue listening to the news. But I must admit, I'm shocked. And imagine all the people who go through those experiences, like the refugees. Yeah? We can't imagine, really, can you? No. Planes disappearing out of the air. How many people are affected? They weren't in the plane, but they're relatives, they're friends who've lost somebody, and that is traumatic. Or think about Christchurch, the earthquakes. That's a huge trauma to so many people. And I have had clients who have, years since, are still suffering from anxiety, heart palpitations, nightmares, anxiety, and it's all since the earthquakes. I've had a 70-year-old man come in who was abused at the age of 12, sexually abused. And he never, ever spoke to anyone. I was the very first person. So, I mean, this is almost like 60 years of his life where he has kept that inside. So there's a lot of, well, I would say that's post-traumatic stress. And it has influenced his life. Does homeopathy, is there a cure for that? Or does that man also need psychiatric help? Well... Does anyone, I mean, you know, like I said, I associate with guys coming back from war and they might have been in the Vietnam War and seen horrible things. Well, yeah, that was 50 years ago, but still they have that. They still suffer the nightmares, the sleeping disorders, the anxiety, the heart palpitations. And if you have that ongoing, eventually it will result in other physical ailments like constipation or diarrhea or migraines or eczema. And however it then presents physically will vary from person to person. So someone with an eczema coming to see the homeopath who had suffered something traumatic 50 years ago will not make that connection, will they? No, they will not. I guess traditional medicine might say, look, what we need to put you on is antidepressants. Are we talking the homeopathic antidepressant here? No, we're not. And that's the main difference. All the pharmaceutical drugs will force... That's the whole principle of Western medicine. It will force the mind or body into a certain action, reaction, management or suppression, right? So it's a force working against an inner force and making you do something, making you go to sleep, stopping those emotions. But it's not dealing with the cause, with the problem. Why are you depressed? Why? Well, maybe because I have survivor guilt or maybe because I did something. I drove the car and someone else died. It should have been me, right? So there's guilt, there's anger, there's self-pity, there's frustration, all this stuff. So by just taking a drug that you're not depressed, the only result is really that you walk around as a living zombie. Now, the homeopathic remedy will not delete... The past. ...all that past. That's right. Nothing can do that. Unfortunately, these things will stick with you for the rest of your life. It's just going to be part of you. But what the homeopathic remedy will help you with is to be able to let it go, to see things a bit differently, to deal with that anger, the resentment, to be able to forgive, also to be able to love yourself. It's a huge question. And if I ask people, do you love yourself? You would be surprised how many look at me aghast like, what kind of question is that? No, right? Well, yeah, what kind of question is that? Well... If I said to you, do you love yourself? How do you say, of course I do. I might think to myself, wow, she's got a big ego. No, I don't think... No, it's not necessarily the ego. It's about, are you happy and content with yourself? If you can't... I think if you love yourself, you can also take care of yourself. You take pride in yourself. You respect yourself, right? So, many who can't love their self will always try to be someone else to fit in to be liked because they don't like themselves, right? Or they will sabotage all their efforts. They will... Yeah, just be destructive towards themselves. So, obviously, there's a lack of self-love. How do you teach someone to love themselves, though? Because, yeah, I agree with you entirely but it's a big ask because it saves money and you need to start to learn to love yourself probably before you can love anyone else. Well, I think that is what, and that goes way back to your question earlier on, what counseling and group sessions and psychotherapy, well, they can talk you through that and work through that and give you tips on how to do that. From the homeopath's perspective, it's about understanding what is your actual essential issue, finding that remedy that will resonate with that, so be it pent-up anger and indignation or resignation or denial or whatever it is, along with the physical expression, so the illness that you've come with and by giving that right remedy, it just shifts. And that's the good thing. When you come to the homeopath, I don't need to know the whole abuse and the whole situation or the exact details of that earthquake or the car crash. It's about, okay, there was an earthquake, how did you react? How did you feel? How do you feel now? What's going on? What went through your body? Was there a tingling or a cramping and those kind of things? So we try not to make our clients and patients relive the trauma. That's what they can do in counseling and I think it goes hand in hand. I guess part of the problem as well is that and you might tell me if I'm wrong here or not but I would guess that you'd find that more women would open up and tell you what their problems were than men because men like to be staunch, they like to harden up, get over it and get on with it. Is that the main problem that we have with this post-traumatic stress disorder? Actually, I wouldn't say so. I'm surprised men open up just as much. I have several men of various ages and they open up just as much and feel really well afterwards because in the clinic, that is their space and everything that happens and is said stays in that room. That is good to know. So part of your job is almost like being a counselor, shoulder to cry on. Tell me what your problems are. Well, it is hard and challenging at times and it is also, I guess it's providing that space for someone to feel comfortable and to trust and to feel secure enough to open up and I think the hard thing for any counselor or practitioner or doctor is you need to have empathy but not sympathy. Lots of people cry at some point and tears well up and I hear horrific stories but if I show sympathy and want to cry with them then I won't be able to do my job I won't be able to help them. It must be hard not to sometimes. Yeah. It is hard to keep that distance but being empathetic and it is important for all practitioners that afterwards you can actually let go and say all those issues go out the door with the person and if I don't do that and I catch myself sometimes then I can actually feel some of those symptoms like I will get that headache or I will get that backache and yeah then I have to... I wonder as an example for instance the older man who came to see you and told you that he had been abused many years ago once he has got that off his shoulder what then homeopathically do you recommend for him? Well I gave him a remedy that fitted his feelings around... for him it was a lot of anger pent up anger and he used anger throughout his life and that basically was sort of the way he sabotaged himself and put lots of stepping stones in his own way and he said you know unbelievable this and this happened and I didn't react I wasn't angry I just let it go and that was the beginning of a change it's not going to make that abuse go away but it just helps for the future and let him see it as ok it's bygone and I feel better and the result of that anger that I've been carrying is now starting to diminish and with that the headache started to go away as well So in traditional medicine he probably would have got a course of antidepressants for example and he might be on those forever is your remedy, is he going to be on there forever? No, because the homeopathic medicine is about stimulating or triggering you as a person on your mental, your thoughts on your emotions and on your physical level, so all the cells in your body to actually gear up and to deal with whatever is going on when that happens healing or cure eventuates and you don't need anything anymore it might be that you need a few doses and it might be that some incidents in your life maybe a few weeks or months down the track might give you a setback then you need another dose to give you another push but then you're on your way again We've got to take a break and have a song and you picked out a crack of a song Oh I did, yeah Back in the day when we were young You had your white tight pants on and your glistening top with the diamonds on it What was the song called? It was called Tragedy from the Bee Gees Tragedy from the Bee Gees Tragedy from the Bee Gees Here I lie in a long stand on this heartless town Every time in a world of tears I've lost this ground Going home I shouldn't make it all alone I really should be holding you holding you loving you loving you Tragedy when the feeling's gone and you think the world is tragedy when the morning comes and you don't know why it's hard to say when no one will love you you're going away Tragedy when you're just a child and the world is tragedy when the morning comes and you don't know why it's hard to say
