I'm going to dive into the music of Mexico. One artist I'm going to be discussing today is Vicente Fernandez. Vicente Fernandez has released many songs throughout his career. Vicente has released over 100 albums and contributed to more than 30 films. One of his most iconic songs is Estos Cielos, roughly translated to This Jealousy. Upon its release, it reached number 3 in the Billboard of Hot Latin Tracks in the United States. Vicente Fernandez is a common name in the Latino household. He's the poster child for the genre of ranchera music. Through his work, he has earned many nicknames such as el rey de la musica ranchera, the king of ranchera music, and el ídolo de Mexico, the idol of Mexico. Vicente Fernandez has been singing since the age of 8 but only reached his success in the 1960s. Since then, he's been performing for his fans. Mariachi music is a big part of Mexican culture because the genre goes back in Mexican history. Estos Cielos comprises of violins, guitars, drums, trumpets, bajo sexto, and Vicente's voice. The song begins with the violins playing at a high pitch, introducing the song's melody. Right after, the trumpets begin to follow the violins, which we will listen to now. The song is very emotional. Vicente expresses his jealousy of losing his previous lover as he sings. This song in particular is more for entertainment purposes, hence the fast-paced tempo, perfect for karaoke or a carne asada with your tias and tios. Although Vicente Fernandez passed away on December 12, 2020, his legacy in music still lives on. Of course, he is one of many artists that have had a big impact on the music industry, not only in Mexico but other parts of the world as well. This song is important because it is one of the classics. Many bands sing this song during big events, and it is a song sung by the king of ranchera. The music of Mexico is amazing at demonstrating emotion, the range of voices, and storytelling. However, it is through Vicente's songs that have made the genre of ranchera music an experience.
