April King’s “Keeping It Green” podcast explores how intentional eating impacts spirit, health, and culture. She introduces “frequencing”—aligning your vibration with truth through food choices—and frames food sovereignty as cellular liberation. Sharing a joyful experience at Soul E Vegan in Oakland, she emphasizes that what we eat shapes our future and ancestry. The episode also highlights astragalus, an adaptogenic root from Traditional Chinese Medicine known for boosting immunity and helping the body manage stress, illustrating the blend of science and soul in green living. Welcome to Keeping It Green with April King, the number one green culture podcast, where green cuisine meets real wellness, superfoods meet freestyles, and every episode is repping green culture for a green world. I'm your host, April King, mama, artist, flexitarian food alchemist, and your ultimate green lifestyle guide. This isn't just a podcast, it's a movement. We're talking truth, taste, and transformation. This is green innovation. And yes, we've got an original soundtrack curated just for you. Are you ready to live your best green life? Let's go. I play the green game 'cause I'm a green girl. Keep track of green trends 'cause it's a green world. Keep making green friends so that my green grows. My green never ends. I'm in the green zone. I love good food. Take pleasure in life. I'm in a good mood 'cause I eat what's right. Green cuisine in my kitchen, green life is my vision. To be a green generation is my mission. We could all buy stock in green commodities. This is green culture doing green properly. I like my yerba mate from Yerba Madre. Check Amazon for my acai. Get my chi straight with my yogi tea. Vitamin C, acerola cherry, raw vegan bling. This is April King. Yeah, we keep it green. Hey. Earth, mother, lovers, what's happening? Today's episode is about frequencing, food sovereignty, and future culture, and what it means to be deeply intentional about what you put in your body, not just for health, but for spirit. Let's talk about it. Let's talk about what liberation tastes like. Because yes, this episode is full of joy and green cuisine and cosmic headlines, but underneath it all, we're asking something deeper. What are you feeding yourself? And what are you feeding your future? Every bite is an investment in your energy, in your cells, in your life. The fuel we give our bodies doesn't just affect our weight or our blood work, it affects our mood, our focus, our immunity, our ancestry. It affects how we show up in community, how we hold grief, how we receive joy. And that's why I talk about frequencing, the act of being in rhythm with your resonant soul frequency, being in tune with your resonant soul frequency. It's a word I created over 20 years ago, and now it's also the name of my music publishing company. And frequencing is about aligning your vibration with your truth, living in rhythm with your own divinity, with your higher self. It's about choosing habits, foods, people, practices, thoughts that match your highest frequency. And food is a core part of that. When we eat in alignment, we shift, not just physically, but spiritually, energetically, economically, ecologically. Because every time you choose what you put in your body, you are shaping the health inheritance you're passing down, the culture of wellness your family will grow up in and thrive in, and the kind of future you're actively participating in. Food sovereignty is cellular liberation. Learning about ingredients, understanding labels, questioning marketing, knowing your body and your needs. It's not elitist, it's empowerment. It's how we move from surviving to self-determining. And listen, this isn't about being perfect. I'm flexitarian. I'm a mom. I'm an artist. I'm in this journey too. But I believe in asking the question, what does my liberation taste like today? What does it taste like? So I got a story to share with y'all. You ever have one of those days where your soul gets fed in every possible way? I'm talking flavor, frequency, and a little divine reminder you're not crazy for the path you're on. I was so excited. I hadn't been to the new location yet. I went to the vegan soul food buffet at the new Soul E Vegan location at 101 Broadway in Oakland. And it was just, it was everything. Potato salad, the Creole mac and cheese on point, the gumbo, sweet potatoes. I mean, it was, it was a feast. Southern fried tofu. I absolutely love Soul E Vegan. It's been a staple in my life since I've been living in the Bay Area. And I'm so excited for the new location. And we're gonna have a whole feature on that experience coming up. It was incredible. And I invited a friend who's a poet, revolutionary, flexitarian, yes, all the same person, Soul Brother Number Nine. If you're in the Bay Area, come through Juneteenth, Music City SF. He's putting on a wonderful event there that I'm gonna be featuring at, doing some music, talking about Afrofuturism. But we just had the most incredible time there. And I brought my son, Zayou, was there with us. And we did some photo shoots and fun playing around Jack London Square afterwards. And it was just, it was just one of those, it was just one of those days that you just feel all warm and fuzzy. And later that day, I got a message from a friend I hadn't talked to in a minute, and we had a wonderful conversation. Shout out to J Flo. And she's been listening to the podcast, and she just got it, the segments, the voices, the dream green moments. And that hit me hard because sometimes, you know, you're just out here creating in the void, wondering who sees it, and then boom, confirmation. Somebody out there is tuning in and feeling it. So I hope that that is the experience for many of you tuning in right now, because I have some wonderful green magic to share with you today. Because, you know, we're not just talking about kale and cashews, we're talking about how to build a new world in our bodies first. Talking about frequencing. So yeah, today's episode is the vibe. It's science and soul, and it's liberation with flavor. So let's get into it. Yeah, oh wow, I just, oh my god. I think, I think that's what I've been doing. I think that's why I've been feeling so good lately. I think it's because I'm frequencing. I am. Yeah, I've been getting all my superfoods, reading my labels, my food plan, and just living in my authentic green life. And you know what? I am frequencing. I'm doing it. But you know, I still have some questions. I mean, like, what the is astragalus? Astragalus, what is it? That's such a great question. Yeah, I'm so glad you asked. Well, first of all, it sounds like the name of like a lost Greek philosopher, right? But astragalus is actually a root used in traditional Chinese medicine for over 2,000 years, maybe longer. And it's here to protect your energy, your immune system, and your peace. Think of astragalus as that friend who shows up before things go wrong. It doesn't wait until you're on the couch coughing, regretting your life decisions. No, it prevents the nonsense. It's what herbalists call an adaptogen, meaning it helps your body adapt to stress, emotional stress, environmental stress, even trying to be a compassionate human being in a collapsing empire stress. So it could be helpful for anyone in this day and age. And this root isn't just energy support, it's scientifically backed, all right? It's been shown to strengthen immune function, help regulate blood sugar levels, improve. insulin sensitivity, offer antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, support wound healing and tissue repair, protect the heart and kidneys, reduce fatigue and support stamina, especially in people with chronic conditions. I just want to pause for the cause and remind you all that I am not a doctor or a nutritionist. I don't hold any degrees about how food and supplements work in your body. I am just a green girl out here in a green world sharing things that I love with you. You are the ruler of your body. So please check in with your doctor or whoever you consult with before you make any changes to your diet or add new supplements and make the decision that works for you. I'm just here sharing some information with you that you might want to check out or not, or you'll just know what the fuck astragalus is. Let's talk about it a little more. In traditional Chinese medicine, astragalus is used to tonify the spleen and lung qi, which is all about breath, digestion, and life force. It also boosts what TCM calls wei qi, your body's protective energy field, a kind of energetic immune system. Is it technically a root chakra herb? Not officially, but a lot of modern herbalists say it acts like one. It's grounding, stabilizing. It brings that "you're safe to expand now" kind of energy. You can take it as a tea, a tincture, a powder in your smoothie, or even toss the dried root into a pot of soup or broth. It has a subtle, earthy, sweet taste, but does pair well with chili if you want to be adventurous. Just a heads up though, astragalus is not for acute situations. It's more of a daily vibe, not a 911 herb. You build with it, like boundaries, like hydration, like trust. So if you've been feeling tired, sensitive, overworked, or like your immune system is whispering, "help," astragalus might be that quiet, zen ally that says, "I got you, love." Because in this dream green life we're building, we don't want to burn out before we heal. Stay nourished, stay radiant, stay ready. So it's a root, it's a vibe, it's a whole lifestyle. And if you've been listening to the show, you might be able to guess where I'm gonna recommend you get some really badass astragalus. It's Dragon Herbs. Yes, dragonherbs. Com. I love Dragon Herbs astragalus. There are many wonderful companies that you can find astragalus from, but the one that I have used and had wonderful experience with, I get from Dragon Herbs. So now you know that's what the fuck astragalus is. Alright. Yeah. I'm gonna have to try that. I want, I want that support. I want that grounding. Is it that time? Can we drink the green? I think it's the perfect time to dream green. Okay, Earth Mother lovers. Take a deep breath with me. Inhale slowly through your nose. Fill up your belly, your ribs, your chest. Hold it for just a moment. Now exhale gently, completely, out of your mouth. Let your shoulders drop. Let your jaw unclench. Let your belly soften. With each breath, let it take with it everything you didn't ask for today: tension, tightness, to-do lists, expectations. That's right. Drop the shoulders. Relax your jaw. Let your eyes soften. You don't have to hold it all right now. You don't have to be everything to everyone. Right now, you get to be. Let your breath move through your body like a warm wave of permission. Permission to rest. Permission to imagine. Permission to receive. This is your portal. Let's dream green. Good morning, Earth Mother lover. You're waking up in your dream green home. The air is sweet. Your body feels rested. There's sunlight slipping through the sheer bamboo curtained windows, and your favorite plant is blooming by the bed. Even glowing a little. You stretch. You smile. And you remember, the revolution already happened. You made it. On your lap is a tray. Fresh fruit from your community food forest. Organic pancakes with all the fixings you love. A latte that you love, is it a matcha latte, a cold brew latte, a golden turmeric milk latte? Fair trade, non-GMO, delicious, melting in your mouth. You sip, you scroll, and the headlines on your holographic news screen make your soul exhale. Flint's water declared sacred and sovereign, lead-free for life. Mass release of political prisoners begins across the nation. The USDA has been acquired by someone with magical powers, and it's been converted into an herbal apothecary network. Universal wellness income is activated. Yoga therapy, doula care, and organic food is now fully covered. Indigenous and Black-led restoration projects heal five million acres of land. Prisons are shutting down and turning into retreat centers with sliding-scale breathwork, restorative justice centers. There's a woman-led global climate council, and healing is now international law. You chuckle softly. Took y'all long enough. You don't rush, you don't hustle. Your joy is your protest. Your protest is your peace. Your whole house is solar-powered, self-cleaning, and filled with the scent of cedarwood, cocoa butter, and homegrown herbs. Your fridge restocks itself with local produce and love notes from your soul family, your ancestors. Your to-do list: meditate, stretch, dance, love, eat, rest, and repeat. This is the choose-your-own-dream-green-life adventure. If you're solo, your sanctuary is sacred, part plant temple, part creative studio, part full-body exhale. If you're living with... Shout out, shout out to J Flow, we love you. That's right, we sure do. Shout out to J Flow. Ah, so much gratitude, so much gratitude to all y'all Earth Mother lovers around the globe holding it down, keeping it green. Yeah. Got a shout out, Bomba Zone for that banging acai. As always, Dragon Herbs, you know, we love you, keeping it green, love Dragon Herbs. I got a shout out to Mia Dyson, the executive chef and founder of Solely Vegan. Whenever you're in Oakland, make sure that you get a dose of that magic. They're gonna be having their full grand opening coming up and I can't wait to tell you more about all of that. So, uh, gosh, shout out to the cosmos, shout out to Mother Earth for providing us with all this green bounty. Shout out to the dreamers, my dream green lovers. The future is ours. I'm staying militantly positive. Eyes wide open, aware of what's happening. But we're here shouting out our infinite potential to create joy, health, and well-being beyond anything we've ever imagined before. How about that? Yeah, militantly positive. Things are getting crazier, then I need more reishi. I need, I need to, um, meditate more. I need some more, uh, Dr. Hauschka products to make me feel like a magical goddess. I need more dream green magic in my life. Staying militantly positive. All right, Earth Mother lovers, thanks for tuning in. We'll catch you next time. Until then, keep it green.
