Jay is not here with us today. But, this is episode three, Major Onions. Why? We talk a lot about March Madness and the major onions in it. But, we have one of the gentlemen here, Ben, as his first episode with us. Tell us a little bit about yourself, Ben. Yes, thank you for having me. It's an honor, obviously. I know Danny through going to school with him forever and playing sports with him forever. And, I know Jared and Jake through Danny, through video games and things like that. I would say I'm a pretty big sports fan and definitely a big fan of the CEL, which we talk about. And, yeah, I'm happy to be here. Glad to have you. Now, number three, third point here in the intro, Jay is out partying in Florida. That is why he's not going to be on this one. He's just living it up, down with the family on spring break. He worked hard, though, to get to this. So, you had a thought on this, though, Craig? Yeah, he's 100% a lobster by now. I've looked and it's like 90 degrees down in Florida, so he is definitely toast. He can't even put his arms down. You know what's wrong with arms out like that? Oh, man. We got a good episode for you. A lot of laughs, a lot of good times. We do recap basketball, the Sweet 16s of the 8A. We talk about the Final Four, what's coming up, because our next airing of an episode will be after the championship. So, it'll be a recap, essentially. We do have a game. You're not going to want to miss it. It's Zombies. Jared and Ben face off in an instant classic. Talking about Call of Duty Zombies. We segue into the CDL. Ben and I are big into it, so we talk a little bit about the upcoming matches and a little bit of the free agency in it. And then we end with NFL free agency nuggets and the Lions, specifically, how their offseason has been. Close it out with a beautiful, beautiful bet you could take if you are a Lions fan. But, with that said, sit back, grab a bite to eat, maybe a drink, and enjoy the episode. All right, gentlemen. First order of business today is going to be Thursday night, the Sweet 16, March Madness. I know we've talked a lot about March Madness, but it's what's hot in sports right now. So, let's dive right in. The first game was MSU Kansas State. I actually watched this at your folks' house, Creech. What do we got on it? A real instant classic. That's what we got. That was one of the best tournament games. Actually, just one of the best college basketball games I think I've ever watched. Yeah, you screamed that right at the end of the game. Yeah. I was pretty hyped watching it. I heard the stories from your dad. It was quite awesome. It had everything. It had the star performance, the Marquise Noel. Shout out to him. He is really good at basketball. And it also had even the element of the injury, where he went down in the second half, which looked like his ankle touched the ground, like the outside of his ankle sprang the ground a little bit. And then he goes out and dramatically comes back in and doesn't really miss a beat, which is... And the team definitely missed a beat when he was gone. They started giving MSU... MSU went on their run and it was like, well, here they go. It was 11-2. It was pretty significant and pretty obvious that Kansas State couldn't do anything. And then I kept standing over there on the sideline just sitting there and the announcers were saying he needs to get up, he needs to stay off the benches and get up and keep moving because the longer he sits, the worse it's going to be. And you could see him. He was over there ready to go. And that was impressive. Well, we've all had rolled ankles before. And the first thing you're told is don't take the shoe off. And I see him over on the sideline, like full on, barefoot, re-wrapping it. And I was like, ah, is this going to work? They taped it quickly. I'm assuming that's why. Yep. He broke the assist record, which was 18, so he had 19 assists, right? That is... Sorry, real quick. As a... Like, I played point guard in high school. You know, it wasn't great. But if I got, like, five or six assists, even a seven. Seven bomb? That would be... We were talking about a nice day at school, for sure. So I can't even imagine putting up 19 assists. And I think I was talking to it with both you guys after the game. Like, that to me is more impressive than dropping 40. And I say that because you are literally providing everyone else. You're so much more dangerous. Because he's still scoring points. He was responsible for 60 plus of their 90 points. Yeah. And that being said, going against, you know, I don't think any of us have any luck for MSU. And you're obviously, hopefully nobody listening. But that being said, you know that Tom Izzo is legit. Arguably, he's a great coach. And their game plan had to be 70% him? I mean, how much would you... He was the one that was carrying them throughout the tournament. Noel was. So the fact that Tom Izzo had time to prepare for that, and prepare his boys for that, and that still happened is insane. Yeah. Yeah. It was a great, great game. High scoring. MSU had just a few more turnovers, if you can point to anything, 13. But 13 in an entire overtime game isn't bad. No, not at all. There's not much to point to. What was it? A four-point game by the end of it? Yeah. And Michigan State out-rebounded Kansas State. They looked like... Every time on offense, Michigan State was pulling down an offensive rebound and getting a second chance. So what they had in turnovers, they made up for with offensive rebounds and stuff. Did you mention the overtime? About B-Dubs? Oh, no. Yeah, this also was our first overtime game of the tournament. So a huge dub, getting six free wings. Unfortunately, I couldn't log into the app. We're going to have to figure that out. The app was down. But I hope everyone else got their wings. The last part about this game, MSU fans, what are your thoughts on the season? Are you happy with the 16 effort? Well, MSU only cares about Final Four, so is that true? Are you happy to be in the Sweet 16? Because I saw Izzo crying when they made it to the Sweet 16. So he certainly cares about it. How do MSU fans feel about making the Sweet 16? And obviously, I understand you're going to be upset because FAU made it in the Elite Eight and eventually won. So obviously, way more to be desired this season, but you just got to win the games in front of you. They caught Kansas State on a hot night, but that's just how basketball goes. Yeah, I feel like if I'm a Michigan State fan, which I'm not, I would feel like you were happy to get to the Sweet 16 with the upset of Marquette, but you almost feel like it's a missed opportunity because you know if you win that game against Kansas State, you're in the Final Four. They probably would have beat FAU. The next game, Arkansas gets run over by UConn, and no one was even watching that because MSU and Kansas State was on at the same time. So any thoughts on that game, gentlemen? Yeah, you pretty much watched it from the top right corner of your screen where it just has a little box showing the score. Oh, wow. I thought I was going to buy myself a turn to that team. On CBS? Yeah. But another good game, the third game of the night, FAU-Tennessee. Down goes an orange team. We've been talking about orange teams being good, but Tennessee is going to Tennessee. A big shout-out to FAU. If you all remember, in the first episode, we were making our predictions. I mentioned 30-plus win teams typically make a run. One of them did. There were three 30-plus win teams, Oral Roberts, Charleston, and FAU. Who did I pick to make the run? Oral Roberts. They got wrecked by Duke. But notice here, we have a team in the final four. Now, it's not always the final four, but they always do make it to at least a Sweet 16, a team that no one hears about, no one cares about. They have 30 wins during the season. They're just a successful team. They get done. Typically, they're full of seniors as well. Another note on FAU that I saw today, their home stadium holds 2,900 people. That's the max capacity. That's smaller than high school stadiums. Yeah, yeah, honestly. That's not a lot of people. They're going to be playing at the final four, which I believe is in Houston, at the Texan Stadium. They got it set up to hold 74,000 people or something like that. What an increase. Yeah, but shout-out to FAU. They outscored Tennessee 40-28 in the second half. They shot 9% better than Tennessee did, and they just handled their business. Also, a really good game that ended the nightcap there Thursday night. I know you watched this one, Ben. Gonzaga-UCLA, wild end of the game. UCLA was leading most of the game, and then UCLA doesn't score for 10 1⁄2 minutes of actual game time. Like, does not make a bucket. They have a couple of free throws. They do not make a bucket. So then Gonzaga's up 72-62 with 2-3 to go. Take me through what happens then. The text chains that we have back and forth at 1130 at night when we're watching games, and we're both sitting in bed watching our game, and there's just constant text messages going back and forth about what's going on in the game that we're both watching is hilarious. And Alexis is always, like, trying to figure out why I'm up so late texting you all the time, and that's why I usually... Timmy missing two free throws with 25 seconds left is kind of incredible for somebody of his... I would say his caliber. I mean, he's been at Gonzaga for 20 years, it seems like, at this point. And that would have put the game up by four, right, with 25 seconds left? Yeah. It was a two-point game, and he missed both. Which is just sickening. But we also hate Timmy, so... Yeah, correct. You hate to see it. But then Bailey takes the lead with 11 seconds left for UCLA. Wild shot. Like, you think, wow. Onions. UCLA's going to get it done again, right? But then what happens next? Julian Strother. Is that his last name? Yeah, Strother. It's the three from the logo, which was this far. Was that one of the craziest shots that we've seen? Of this tournament, for sure. I mean, that was a play call that they called back for the National Championship play call, correct? For NOLA. They call it... I can't remember the name of the kid that hit that shot. It was Chris Jenkins who did. Yep, from our trivia game. Yes, exactly. Shout out, Jake. Jake with the win. Coach for Gonzaga, Mark Few, he called that play the Jay Wright play. That's right. Which is a cool callback. It's designed exactly the same way. Just a simple handoff from the absent March Madness. And that's... They were down by one. Like, you would think they'd go for a layup. No, no, no. They drain a three with what? I don't know. It had to be something. It was not enough time for UCLA to do anything. Yeah. And this takes it back. Like, what are the odds that it happens again? This happened, was it two years ago or one year ago? Was it Jalen Suggs? And this was the Final Four. Jalen Suggs. Yeah, what a wild shot. Gonzaga and UCLA put it on. Yep, it was two years ago. Yeah. Crazy shot to end it. Not a big UCLA fan, but they have gotten screwed by Gonzaga the last couple times. They haven't got their number. Tell me how much the game has changed with coaches calling a play like that to win a game when you're down by one. Yeah. Like, that's insane. You would have never heard of that 20 years ago. Thank you, Steph Curry. But you had one more stat about Gonzaga there. Eight times now in a row they've made the Sweet 16. That's a very impressive streak. You say that as the third highest streak of all time? Yes. Third. That is wild. Timmy has been a part of every single one of them. Yeah, right. He's been there for eight years. He's been there for eight years. That's hilarious. Let's hop to Friday night real quick. I pretty much labeled Friday night the fall of the one seeds. This now is the first ever Elite Eight with no one seeds thanks to San Diego State holding Alabama to 11% beyond the arc. 3-4-27. I would say the three of us could be on Bama and do better than that. I think. Just kidding. You just get lucky and close your eyes and throw it up and it will go in more. That's bad. But anybody want to talk about Brandon Miller? He had some other personal things going on. Let's just say that. He was playing distracted. So if he was in the NBA, he'd have one of those load management days. Yeah, exactly. He just didn't do well in the tournament. Nine points per game, seven rebounds per game, two assists. Overall one seed and that's the best player not getting it done. He was pretty much a nothing burger out there. And also another thought I had while I was watching this. This is a pretty gross game, at least in the first half. There was like a street fight out there. There was bodies hitting the floor every time I opened my eyes. I'm like, what is happening out there? But also, screw Alabama. They're not great at both sports yet. Good grief. San Diego State wanted Bama. Yes. So there goes our overall number one seed. And the last number one seed who I had winning it all, Houston. They just didn't play defense. Miami shot 44% from beyond the arc. That's good. That's what you aim for in a college basketball game. And all five starters scored in double digits from Miami. That's crazy. That's Houston not playing defense. And they were supposed to be a pretty decent defensive team. Yeah, that's their calling card is defense. They're long, lanky, and athletic, and fast. And they played good defense all year. But that's what happens when you play in a conference like that. You play sub-teams and get exposed in March. Last couple games, kind of meaningless on Friday night because both teams ended up losing as we had eight. Creighton beat Princeton. There goes the Cinderella team of the tournament. 15th seed finally went down. They were cool to watch. Bunch of Ivy League guys just wrecking all these great basketball teams. I saw on my Instagram feed, it was the Princeton team doing their homework before the game or something. I did. In between days. And they're like, they cash in on homework before the Sweet 16 or lead eight or whatever they were in. And I thought that was pretty good. Yeah. You forget these kids are taking college classes. At least the guys at Princeton are. Yeah. They're going to have to sit at the bar. They will. I don't know. Yeah. Texas beat Xavier. I'm going to be honest, I didn't watch that game. Not much to say about it, though. Just kind of a good old-fashioned whooping of Xavier. Let's move into lead eight, though. Exciting stuff. FAU Kansas State. Kansas State coming off a super high emotional win against MSU. Very close back-and-forth game. Some major stats to pull from this game that I noticed. FAU had 22 turnovers. I wish I knew the statistic on if you had 20-plus turnovers, how often you won. Oh, yeah. Because it's not often. That reminds me of, like, an NFL game when you turn it over four times. Yeah. One of the odds you win. Take some ridiculous stats. So they had 22 turnovers just compared to 12 for Kansas State. And you would think, oh, wow, Kansas State wins by, you know, 15. But here's the stat that turns it around, as well. The biggest difference in this game is FAU out-rebounded Kansas State 44-22. Wow. That's the same thing like we talked about when they were playing Michigan State. Michigan State was having their way on the boards with them, as well. So, obviously, Noel is a short guy, I'll say. He is a rebounding liability. Speaking of Noel, you can say he did his thing. He had a double-double, 30 points, 12 assists. But for his standards, 8 of 21 shooting is not good enough. Because they clearly didn't get rebounds. So those, you know, 20-plus missed shots. Yeah, when you're hucking it from the logo every other time. I said I liked his style of hucking it every once in a while. But, man, he hucks it a lot. Yeah, that's like his style all the time. That was the first time I saw him play when he was playing against Michigan State. I'm like, oh, he's just feeling himself. Nope, he does that frequently. Who was the team that Middle Tennessee upset a couple years ago? Was that the really, really high-ranked Michigan State team? The 2C, yep. Florida Atlantic is in the same conference as them, to put it in perspective of their plan for the national championship. That is wild. Middle Tennessee beating MSU was, like, incredible. And then they lost. Maybe they won one more game. But it was just like you knew they weren't going anywhere. Florida Atlantic is in the same conference. What conference is that? Conference USA. Yeah. They win it. They win it. They're going to have a way more recent national champion than the Big Tens. Oh, that's sad. That's like the same thing as the college football playoff. Big Ten just doesn't show up. That's for another episode some other time. Another game there's not much to say is UConn-Gonzaga. Gonzaga should have got beat by UCLA, and it showed against UConn. They got dominated. And I was talking about this with Preach a little bit before the episode. Did you know, Ben, UConn has quietly been one of the best teams in the past 25 years of college basketball? They have four national championships. I just saw that the other day. Three of their four have been won in the state of Texas. Yes. And they're back where? Houston, baby. That's right. It's a shoe-in. Put your bets in now. We'll talk about who we think is going to win, but I think we all agree UConn is a favorite right now, especially with the other three teams. Yeah, I don't see them losing. But, yeah, UConn national champions in 2014, 2011, 2004, and 1999. They've won national titles in the last 25 years very quietly. How many other teams have that? If they win this year five in 25 years, that's ridiculous. They don't get talked about enough, and it's their own fault because they disappear for like six years at a time. But when they're back, they're back. We were talking about it. You turn them on randomly in 2018, and they're like four in 24. And you're like, what happened to UConn? Next year, they kind of make a run, and now here they are about to potentially play for a national championship, which is just wild. So, shout out UConn. I mean, if you lose this one, you can only blame yourself because the other national championships they've won were against way better teams on like Cinderella runs where Shabazz Napier just takes over the tournament. Like, you're the favorite. Go get it done because that is super impressive for UConn. Let's hop in. The last couple games of the Elite Eight, Sunday night, San Diego State, Creighton, very close. Low scoring game, 57-56 was the final. Did you get a chance to see the controversial foul that everyone was talking about? No, I just heard today that everybody was hitting on the refs over the weekend, and I was paying attention to what was going on in the games, but not with that. It happened at the very end of the game. I actually just showed Creighton as well. With 1.2 seconds left, the game is tied. A player for San Diego State beats his defender, gets to the free throw line, and kind of takes a floater, and he is barely bumped. And, of course, he falls because every guy that shoots in basketball has to fall. That's the rule. And there's a foul called. I hate it. You cannot decide a game on a foul. And I've seen several videos already of calls way worse than the refs overlooked throughout that game. So I say this saying you can't make that call unless you've been calling it all game. If you've been calling that ticky-tack all game, by all means, call it one more time with a second left. But this reminds me of the Super Bowl in which they called the controversial holding call at the end of the game that didn't let the Eagles have a chance to drive back down. Like, these calls are, like, this is a chance to get to the Final Four. You hang banners for that. Yeah. Yeah, you never want to see the game come down to the refs. No one's there to watch them, but they always like to rear their ugly head at the worst times. Yeah, that's the thing is normally in a situation like that, the refs normally will swallow their whistle instead of calling something that is very weak. I mean, that's an insane mistake. Mm-hmm. It is unfortunate, but San Diego State advances to the Final Four. The coach for San Diego State, I can't remember his name, but he was the guy that was. Brian Dutcher. Yeah, Dutcher was brought up under Steve Fisher. Shout out Steve Fisher. I feel like every time I've watched them in the tournament, they bring up Michigan and show, like, a picture of the Fan Five and stuff like that. It's kind of weird to remember names of stuff, but I don't remember any of that. Last game of the Elite Eight, Miami v. Texas. So I'll be honest, the three of us went and watched John Wick in the theater yesterday. Good movie. We're recording this on Monday right now. Good movie. We won't give reviews, but it was John Wick being John Wick. You got exactly what you wanted after going to see a John Wick movie. Yeah. And you know what you're getting. That's the last thing I'll say about it. Anyway, I look after the movie, about 7 o'clock-ish, I look at my phone. Texas is killing them. How bad are they killing them, Craig? A lot. To the point of what? You know I like my ESPN metrics. Texas had a 95% chance to win with 12 minutes left in the game. 95 is a big number. So after the movie, we decide we want to go grab a bite to eat. So we arrive at the restaurant, us and the wives. And you guys ask me about the game. I say, well, Texas is killing them. It's going to be over. And I remember one of you said, no, I just checked. I think Ben mentioned, no, I just checked. It was actually like a six-point game. I was like, really? We check again at the restaurant, and it's tied. Wild. Elite evaporated. 95% chance, he said, and then gone. Like teams just stop. Like they try to do too much, they get hot in college basketball, and they just stop scoring for 10 minutes at a time or six minutes. Like you just got to get a bucket here or there. And they just didn't. So what happens? Tied at 79. Minute left. Miami makes some free throws. Okay, they're up by two. What happens? Texas turnover. Miami, two more free throws. Up by four. What happens? Texas misses a field goal. Two more free throws. Up by six. And then it's just back and forth. They ice the game away. Miami wins. It's, it's, it's, you hate to see it because Texas really, this was their year. Like of all teams in the Final Four, they could really have made a run at this. Shout out Chris Beard for leaving the team. Also, the Texas coach, I forget his name. You just congratulated me. Now I can't remember his name. But he just signed a five-year deal with Texas. Because he was an interim coach. People forget that. Yep. But, yeah, that's cool. Five-year deal, do you know how much? No clue. It's probably worth something nice. It's Texas. Yeah, they're going to pay him, man. So shout out to that coach making a nice, deep run. Final thoughts on lead eight before we hop into the Final Four, anything? Fairly entertaining. It was a good flight from Thursday to Sunday. Good flight to games. Some big-time performances like Noel. And you got plenty of Cinderella's. Yeah, true. And you, go ahead, go ahead. I was going to ask, do we know what the score was with 12 minutes left to go in that Texas-Miami game? I don't. I think they were up by like 13 or something. I will look that up. But I also, let's just hop into the Final Four while I talk about it. Someone read the lines and who we got. So our first game up on Saturday, 6 o'clock, the blockbuster matchup we've all been waiting for and clearly all predicted in our brackets, the Florida Atlantic Owls. Real quick, I'm pretty sure, before you continue, I'm pretty sure I saw something on ESPN that out of 20-plus million brackets, only one guy got the lead eight correct. And I don't know how. He's on something. Yeah. That's your callback to everyone predicting it. He has a script. Shout out that man. But go ahead, FAU Owls. FAU Owls and the San Diego State Aztecs. Just an absolute classic waiting to happen on Saturday. That's our first game. San Diego State favored by two. Gentlemen, what do we think about that line? I feel like I still don't know enough about either of these teams. I feel like a conference USA team eventually has to come down. But what's San Diego State? Mountain West? Are they Mountain West? San Diego State, I feel like, is better at defense. FAU is better at offense. I'd be interested to see the over-under, the total for that game, take the under, because San Diego State is going to have their boxing gloves on the whole time and be throwing people around. I'm already hearing people talk about how, like, oh, yeah, we always root for upsets, but then whenever it comes right down to it, you've got a Final Four game with two teams that are, you know, historically terrible, that you're going to get a garbage game. So hopefully that's not the case. And that's something I wanted to talk about. When it comes to upsets and March Madness, it's just like anything else. Everything is good in moderation. I don't need eight scoops. That's biblical right there. Yeah, I'm preaching. I don't need eight scoops of ice cream. I can have three. Three is good. But that being said, did you find the score of that game? It was 65-53 with 12 minutes to go. They were up by 12. Yeah, but, you know, college kids doing wild stuff like giving away that kind of a lead is also what makes March Madness great. So, yeah, I know what you're saying. But your scoops are ice cream. Three scoops is good. I don't need eight because, and it's the same thing with upsets. I don't need four Cinderella teams. We have four Cinderella teams. Like, UConn is kind of a Cinderella team. But they didn't expect, nobody asked anyone in UConn, they didn't expect to be in the final four right now. So I consider them a Cinderella team. You don't need four of them. I need one of them. To counter Ben's point here about March Madness and you look for upsets, is it upsets anymore if any team beats the big time in the tourney? Because all we do is lose. We expected that the big ten would just dip out. One team will make the Sweet 16 every year. So next year when you all are making your brackets, pick one team to make the Sweet 16. Everybody else will bow out and don't even consider them upsets. Yeah. And then your moderation will only be three upsets. Yeah, right. For real. But eventually we'll get the formula worked out. We'll have the perfect bracket. But you think back to last year. Last year's final four was just absolutely just laden with blue blood and high match-ups. You had Duke and North Carolina in Coach K's final year. You had Nova Kansas, just insanely good match-ups. And so as much as I love a good Cinderella and a good bunch of upsets, they do come back to bite you in the butt on this Saturday. Yeah. I mean, I don't know about you, but I'll watch these games, but I'm not stoked for them. Yeah, I can understand that. Normally, like that's what everybody was saying last year, too, is that, oh, yeah, there's always upsets and blah, blah, blah. But usually the cream rises to the top, and that's what you got last year with ones and twos and threes and everybody's always there. Yeah. But this year it was a unicorn of a season. Definitely. I picked two one-seeds to be in my final four. Right. I mean, 20 million, almost 20 million people. Yeah, right. Our last game, the final four, last game. Second game, Miami-Yukon. I think this will be the better game. I think these are the two better teams. I think whoever wins this game will win the natty. We got Yukon. The line opens up at Yukon minus five and a half. I want to make a quick point about the final four. I don't have a stat to back this up. I just kind of noticed it the past several years. The tournament is full of upsets, like we've talked about. When it comes to the final four, the better team almost always wins to get to the championship game. The better team, just a full week of preparation. You've now been in the tournament two weeks. The nerves are kind of gone. The better team typically wins. So I would say, don't be surprised if Yukon comes out, lays another nice, big game against Miami, and I don't know who the better team is between San Diego State and FAU. But I think Yukon is going to just get it done. Initially, when I look at this line, only five and a half. That's my initial reaction. I think you can take Yukon in the points and feel pretty confident that you're not lighting your money on fire. But I'm excited. Final four. Chris and I are actually going to be at my brother's in Pennsylvania for the final four. We will be watching. Super excited. So any final thoughts on what this March Madness has been? You may never see another one like it. True. Yeah, honestly. Not for another 20 years. Yeah, pretty wild. It's been fun, though. Yeah. It's been fun talking about it. It's our first ever podcast. The first several episodes have been all about March Madness. It's been fun. It's an interesting year for it. Yeah, true. It's been nice not having to worry about Michigan, I'll say. I ain't nervous. I was not very nervous this whole tournament. But big shout-out to March Madness. Thanks for the guys for performing. Thank you for the free wings. At least we got one overtime gain.
