She found inspiration in nurses writing about informatics, leading her to switch to nursing school despite her family's initial resistance. Dr. Sanchez quickly excelled in health IT, taking charge of EHR deployment as a student, showcasing her passion and dedication to the field. Hello, everyone. Decided to do a nice little podcast to introduce what's happening here, and I'm really lucky to be collaborating today with a long-time colleague, now it's Dr. Sanchez, and I loved your story. And I can't wait. This is the first time that we are actually recording this story, and when I think of you, you are like the pinnacle of, like, nursing, manifestation, you say it, you do it, it happens, and it's done. And I think your story is really inspiring, and when people hear it, they're going to be like, wow, you know, I can do this. I can stick with, I can make this happen. You can have challenges, you can have roadblocks, but it's how you recover. So I'm so excited to speak with you, Dr. Sanchez, and would you do a little introduction of yourself, not too much, because I'd like to get into your story, so if you'd like to state your name and just a very small bit about yourself so they can really get in and enjoy the story. Thank you so much. Hi, everybody. And it's a pleasure, it's more than a pleasure, actually, to be here with Danielle Ciari. I've been talking to her for almost, like, 10 years. We were making the math here, it's around eight years that we met each other in person, and she's the most generous woman that I've ever met in my life, and I really appreciate this moment, and thank you so much for having me today. It's a pleasure. I'm going to have such a good time. So your story, sometimes I hear your story, or I hear bits of where you're at, and I literally go and work on myself, like I've been working on my French, and now I convince myself, like, I got to do it, I'm going to take my B-levels, I'm going to work my way up to C, like, I'm doing it, and I practice every day, and your story is really inspiring. So for nurses, let's start at the beginning. Tell us a little bit, you're from Salvador, tell us about your story, starting with your bachelor's degree. Because a lot of people might not understand other cultures, other countries, you learn English, you learn Spanish, you live in a trilingual household, so let's start the story at your bachelor's program. Well, this is very interesting. When we talk about, like, trilingual, it's almost like, oh, my gosh, really, we really speak three languages at home, and that's really what happens right now. But going to my, you know, first choice, Daniel, I don't know if I shared this with you before, but my first choice wasn't nursing, do you remember? No, I don't. Yeah, so yeah, it wasn't nursing, it was technology, actually. Okay, this makes more sense. Yeah. So I'm from Brazil, like Daniel already introduced my, you know, personal story, but I'm from Brazil, a city called Salvador, the state of Bahia, and we are in the northeast area of Brazil. It's a coastal, beautiful place, and I grew up in a family that was very musical, but at the same time, very, like, disruptive when it comes to things like doing new things. And I always thought about being disruptive in my career choice. And I ended up realizing, no, I need to go to something different. My family is all in medical, in the medical field, and I, she's like, oh, okay, I'm going to do IT. Yeah, even, but your mom's a pharmacist, if I recall. Yeah, my mom is a pharmacist, my grandpa is a pharmacist, my family is full of medical doctors, and I was like, okay, I'm going to do IT, and I went. So in Brazil, the way that you go to school, undergraduate, you need to perform an exam. And when I performed this exam, knowing that my family would be very, like, mad at me, but I did an IT, and when I passed, and I passed first, you know, attempt, and I was like, dad, I'll go to IT school, and he goes, no, you're not, you're not going. My grandpa said no, everybody was against it, they wanted me to go to medical school. And the funny fact is, I was looking for a profession that was more connected with technology, and I found a lot of articles, nurses were writing down and publishing articles about nurse informatics, like, 20-something years ago, right? And for you that is listening right now, like, oh, why, why nurse informatics is, how nurse informatics is around now, imagine 20-something years ago, I was reading articles written by nurses about everything, digital transformation, things that you, you even have no idea. Maybe artificial intelligence, we were talking today about it, right? Daniel is one of the, you know, nurses that started writing, and this resonates, right? So when it comes to that, I was like, okay, I'm going to go for nursing school, I'm going to do nursing, and then my family was like, no, you should be a doctor, but anyways, this was my, I think that this was the best choice I made in my life. So you already in your mind, it was technology, and then you went right into the idea of nursing informatics, which I would say 20 years ago, I didn't know was a thing, it's been a part of nursing, like accreditation since 1992, but when I went to nursing school, nobody had told us and talking about it, which I thought in the end was strange coming from Silicon Valley, coming from Cupertino, Sunnyvale, that learning in the heart of it, there wasn't like a special course or conversation or hey, by the way, like, you know, there's this like computer nursing or anything like that. So I think it's interesting that you went technology and then right into nursing informatics as your main role, where I went in as a trauma nurse, and they discovered over the years, I think back in 2009, about informatics, about nursing informatics and coming to him. So I think it's really interesting, the route you came through, and I think the story of how nurses globally come into informatics, everyone's story has been a snowflake or a four-leaf clover. I've never heard the same story of how people got there. So that's really interesting. Yeah, it is interesting. And the way, you know, I jumped into a career, a nursing career, and my first intern opportunity was at a hospital in an IT department. I didn't choose... You just B-lined right on in and just had to go at the point. Well, I chose, I chose to go. Yeah. You know, the whole bar with like ED I did was like mandatory to go to this school. Yeah. And you just went right into it. I think it was fascinating. I didn't make the choice. It just happened to me. And you just went right in. I went right in, and I started contributing as like a health IT intern. And in six months while I was a student, I took over. I was in charge of the EHR deployment. So it was... Things were happening pretty fast. At that point, none of the nursing students wanted to be there. Just me. I was the crazy lady that was in charge of the EHR deployment. So it was...
