Alcestis (Way Translation)

EuripidesEuripides

"Alcestis (Way Translation)" is a Greek tragedy written by Euripides that tells the story of Alcestis, queen of Pherae, and her husband Admetus. Admetus is a supposedly virtuous king who wins the friendship of the god Apollo. When the time comes for Admetus to die, Apollo arranges for a willing substitute to take his place, allowing him to go on living. Admetus tries to persuade anyone to be his substitute, even his own parents, but no one is willing to make that sacrifice. Alcestis eventually volunteers to take her husband's place and dies in his stead, making her one of the noblest heroines in Greek drama.
