Born out of a bored after-school jazz band in Oceanside, California, The Modal Tides were five high-achieving music nerds who ditched pep-rally standards to chase something far stranger. Sax player Tommy “Charts” Villareal insisted they could fuse the modal experiments they were learning in class with the surf music blasting from every car on the coast — and, against all odds, he was right.
