Charlotte goes to visit Jim Potts at his house and finds that he is acting strangely and distant. She asks about the coffee pots he made and he reveals that he has moved on and is in love with the spirits he has created. Charlotte tells him that she no longer loves him and has moved on with someone else. They part ways and Charlotte returns to the ship, where she tells Helen about the encounter. They decide to find a safe place to leave and start anew.
Chapter 25. Jim Potts. The next day they arrive in Lamb. Some of the others go into the village to get food supplies and potions. Charlotte makes her way toward Jim Potts' house. Her mind is focused, but she at the same time is worried. She is worried he may be farther gone than priorhand. As she nears his home, the piles in his backyard have increased drastically. She stops and stares at his place, fearing that this is the last time she may see him.
When she gets to the door, she stops. She puts her head down. Then she lifts it up and knocks. It isn't long before Jim answers. Jim opens the door. He isn't even startled. His energy is as if she is just anyone unlike last time he saw her. He says, Oh, hello, Charlotte. What's an inspecting youse? For a hellenin' coffee, as he looks toward her with a blank stare. Charlotte pauses and says, They are back at the ship.
I came to see youse alone. Jim plainly says, Okay, come on in. As he walks in, his living room is thinly lit. There are more coffee pots and books lying around, even on the couches this time. He sits on a chair across from the couch. She sits on the chair. He says, Something youse desire to talk about, actually. As he plainly looks toward her, she thinks he seems so removed from last time. Odd. She says, How have things been going with the coffee pots? And aren't youse desiring to know how the one you gave us is doing? His expression does not change.
Jim says, Well, the council was amazed by them. They got investors from coffee, and they have a desire for mass market. She says, I must have overjoyed you. One can say, as he continues, I understand it was business as usual, but I produced 30 not too long ago. She says, The 30? Really? Are youse alright? As he continues, Why wouldn't I be? So, how is coffee? He appears unemotional. Charlotte says, He is fine, still learning to properly talk.
He's been a lifesaver at points. But wait, why wouldn't youse be fine? Last time wese were here, youse were taking a back by just making a forth. Now youse say you made 30, and youse seem drained of energy. Youse are lying to me? She looks toward him, more repulsed. Jim says, No, I was fine then. I am fine now. I tried to tell youse. I am more finer than I've ever been in life. She sits back, stunned by what she has heard.
He continues, Is that what youse came all this way for? Looking at her plainly. Charlotte says, No, actually I came for another reason, as she rises from sitting back on the couch. He says, Okay, I'm all ears. She looks toward him and says, Youse have always been one of my best friends, of which youse will always be. Youse were also the first whom I had strong feelings for. For so long it seemed we were holding out for another, until the other was ready.
I can't speak for you, but I have made up my mind about us going forth. I no longer am in love with you. I have moved on with someone. He says, One day this was bound to happen for youse. She says, Huh? He says, I'm all right, Charlotte. When I found this, I knew I couldn't share it, not even with youse. She says, Youse already had moved on with the spirit sharing? With a very confused expression, he smiles and says, Indeed.
As I tried to explain last time youse was here, I get to experience having a child to love on a level that what we had couldn't even fathom. Charlotte's eyes widen. He continues, When I produced those thirty, I, I, it was as if the sensations. Lowly, he says, Nothing greater, no, not been those which I am taking part in. When you asked about the maid, wife thing, I was already made up in mind. May have a maid one day, but I don't desire to share my space with none.
Not even, never a wife. No, not youese. Looking directly at her in the eyes, seriously. Charlotte's sorrowful expression says, You still are my friend. I still will check on you, no matter what. Jim says, I wouldn't have it any other way. Why not bring my son, Coffee, along with you next time, huh? She looks afraid. He continues, Why don't I show youse to the door? They get up and walk to the door. Helen is there with Mike and they go their separate ways.
For a moment, she stands up with her head down. She breathes deep and walks onto the ship at the docks. People have gathered about it amazed by it. Helen is at the bottom. She walks over to meet her and hugs her. She says, How are youse doing? How did it? Looking her directly in the eyes, Charlotte lowly says, He was too far gone. May have. He wasn't. He literally told me off. He said, Last time we come.
He was trying to let us know he was in love with the spirits he produced with. He no longer loved me, just as I no longer love him. I could tell he meant every word. He alright. Us checking on him, especially if we bring Coffee, but he done on any other level with me. Helen tightens her embrace. Helen says, Where do you want to go now? Charlotte says, We'll just go and find a place safe for leave and hers.
