Charlotte and her company arrive in Kachee for her novel. Lee feels uneasy and shares a past experience with James. They meet George Kabat, who mistakes Charlotte for someone named Cora and kisses her. They confront George, who orders his companions to make them disappear. George reveals he is a prince and plans to make Charlotte his queen. His companions send Charlotte's group to Toa to give her time to think. George thanks them and begins preparations.
Chapter 14 Charlotte and George Days later in Kachee, Charlotte and company arrive for her novel. The company descends for the ship together. Charlotte in the front says, Ah, Kachee, been a while. Helen behind her says, Seven months? Really now? Let's get it and go. As she shakes her head, Koff is close behind Helen. James behind him says, Lee, this is Kachee, wealthiest of wealthiest, ever think you'd be here? As he stares slightly back toward her, Lee looks toward him and says, Nah, I can't say that I did.
Soon James and Lee are some ways behind the others due to Lee walking slowly. James says, You've been walking very slow and your voice is very dry, something wrong? Looking down, Lee stops and says, I don't like it here, this place, it don't seem as if I should be here. As if the walls are screaming to take me back to Tulane, like any minute someone will come snatch me back. James reaches toward her. James says, Nothing of the sort is going to happen to you, you hear? Lee says, When I was younger, a noble of Tulane, Howard, he tried to get a treaty to end it.
The treaty was sent all the way to the king for help, cause no one will help him in Tulane. We was told the king not only vetoed it, he burnt it. I hate this place. James stares at her disgusted by what she said then says, Let's go catch up with the others. Outside of the bookstore, Helen says, Go on, get you's book, we'll wait out here for the others. As her and Coffey stand near the door, Charlotte goes in.
Right then, James and Lee come around the corner moving fast. James says, Told you this was the way. Lee quickly replies, Nah, no he didn't. Helen looks at them and giggles. Coffey just looks on. Charlotte steps out of the store, book firmly in her hand. She says, Got what we came for, as they prepare to head back for the ship. Some blocks away in a different direction, Wheelan and Lydia walk toward them. Charlotte and company walk with her leading, it is obvious from her pace she is in a hurry.
In her mind, she has already started reading her novel and they have set sail, but no sooner does she make it around the corner she bumps into someone. It's enough to push her to the ground though. She does not release the book. The others stop as she reaches for her book looking down. The fellow who knocked her down is none other than the noble George Kabat. He bends down to her. George elegantly says, All apologies from me, Madam.
As he reaches for her hand, Helen is bending down to help her as well. Charlotte gets ready to look at him and says, You sure are a tough one. As she does look him in the eyes, George is frozen for a moment. Then George softly says, Cora? Charlotte confused says, Cora? Then George goes over and kisses her on the lips. He is so locked into the moment, he kisses as if they are alone in a room.
Charlotte though, eyes widen, is lost. She doesn't kiss back. Helen is a bit angered. The others are startled. Charlotte then pushes him back. Charlotte says, Who are you's in this Cora? As she still sits on the ground, George eagerly replies, Come now my love, I have desired nothing more than this moment. As he reaches both arms out to her widely, Helen helps her up. George looks up to Charlotte and says, Cora? Whelan and Lydia walk out of an alley nearby.
Lydia dryly says, It's the pirates. Whelan looks across the road. He then starts to walk over their way. Four familiar individuals, a male gremlin, a female and male brownies, and a male banshee, dress nearly as extravagant as George are headed toward the commotion from behind him. George is now on one knee. George braces his lips, looking at Charlotte sorrowfully. She is puzzled as to what to say. Helen looking from Charlotte to George says, We don't know who you are.
As her and Charlotte stand next to each other, and she wags her finger at George. The group of four walk up to George. They begin cleaning him off and standing him on his feet. The gremlin says, There you are, sir, just as new. But George can't take his eyes off Charlotte. When the four look at Charlotte, they are all genuinely startled as if they've seen a ghost. The banshee utters, Know me, Lord. Whelan and Lydia have joined the others.
James, Lee, and Coffey are happy to see them. Helen and Charlotte defensively still look toward George. Charlotte finally able to muster words after looking toward the others says, I'm sorry whoever youse be, but I'm not your Cora. The female brownie says, She doesn't remember yet, me Lord. Charlotte and Helen look at one another confused. Charlotte finally looks off and George breaks his silence and says, Ron, looking at the gremlin, do away with them until Cora is ready.
Ron bows to George then rises and says, As you wish, my prince. Charlotte says, Prince? As she and all of those with her, save Coffey and Lydia, pull their weapons. Ron reacts at blinding speed with the motion of his hands casting the spell. He reaches at them and they all vanish in a cloud of smoke. George, as though something were snatched out of him, grips his chest and strains. The two brownies touch his shoulder. The banshee says, The prophet prophesied she would return to life in three centuries.
I cannot believe it, though my eyes have seen it. Ron says, Yes, Hines, our prince will finally have his queen and can return to rule Dahai. George whispers, Ron, where did you send them? Ron turns to him, bows his head and says, To Toa, my prince. They will give her enough time to think it over, come to her senses. George whispers, Thank you for that. Hines, who has walked over to Ron, says, Derek, Plum, take the master inside for rest.
I and Ron will start preparations. Derek and Plum walk. George will cross the street toward a building complex.
