When people have no other options, they go to hospitals, which strains the healthcare system and doesn't solve homelessness. In Multnomah County, intoxicated individuals are sent to a sobering center, but it doesn't provide long-term solutions or treatment programs for addiction. After sobering up, they are sent back to the streets without addressing the root causes of their homelessness. When people have nowhere else to turn, they often end up in our hospitals. This strains our healthcare system and doesn't solve the underlying issues of houselessness. In Multnomah County, intoxicated individuals are usually sent to a single sobering center funded by money meant to address houselessness. However, this center doesn't offer long-term solutions. It lacks the treatment programs necessary for recovering from drugs and alcohol addiction. After sobering up, many people are sent back to the streets, continuing the cycle of emergency care without addressing the root causes of their houselessness.
