The podcast discusses the Supreme Court case called Angle v. Vitale, which involved a New York law requiring students to say a prayer in public schools. Parents argued that this violated the establishment clause of the First Amendment. One side argued for freedom of speech and the right to practice religion, while the other side emphasized the violation of the establishment clause and the influence on children. The case addressed constitutional issues such as the interpretation of the establishment clause, freedom of speech, and the separation between church and state. The court ultimately ruled 6-1 that public schools cannot hold prayers, protecting the establishment clause. This case has impacted public schools by ensuring religious expression without exclusion or pressure. It has made people feel safer and provided a fair way to interpret laws and rights. Hello, my name is Elliot and welcome to my podcast, Supreme Court Case that has impacted me. Are you in a religion or go to a public school, then this case might have affected you too. This case is called Angle v. Vitale and took place in New York State but affected all public schools in America. A New York law required that students would say the pledge in the morning along with a prayer but parents argued that this prayer was a violation of the establishment clause of the first amendment. One side of the case argued that they were just exercising their freedom of speech and kids are allowed to practice their religion anywhere and even government workers are allowed to have their own religious beliefs. While the other side said it violated the establishment clause and even though government workers can have their beliefs, they cannot express these beliefs while at work and furthermore they cannot express these beliefs in front of easily influenced children. This case also had a few constitutional issues that include the interpretation of the establishment clause, freedom of speech, separation between church and state, government neutrality, and freedom of religion. These were the constitutional issues that the court had to interpret and decide upon. This case had many parents concerned for both sides and wondering how this case will also affect their children. The general public was concerned if this case would end with their freedom of religion in schools left unprotected while another side of the public worried that their protection over the establishment clause would be violated. Ultimately though, the case ended with a 6-1 vote stating that public schools cannot hold prayers as it is a violation of the establishment clause and came to a fair conclusion that it did not violate anyone's rights and left most people satisfied with their result. This case relates to me specifically because I am an atheist and if this case did not happen and this prayer happened in the morning, I know that I would feel left out and I would also feel excluded and it could even lead to getting bullied by people who disagree with my beliefs. This case ensured that kids don't feel excluded and people can exercise their religion while also not expressing it on a level to where they feel they have to at school. This case has impacted public schools by ensuring that the establishment clause is protected and that kids can express their religion without feeling excluded or feeling that they have to. This case left most people happy with the result, but some still think that it would be better to have these prayers and even left some controversy between them, but mostly the case had most people in agreeance. This case still impacts the people of America by making them feel safer and having a fair way for people to interpret their laws and rights and even leave ways for them to argue their side while possibly even changing how everyone views this right or law. That was my podcast. Thank you for listening and I will see you next time.
