The hosts emphasize the importance of understanding and respecting different cultures and treating others with kindness. Hi guys, welcome to our podcast. My name is Ellia. My name is Fatima. And my name is Eggie. Today we are going to be focusing on the cultural aspect in our society and how it impacts our views as time passes through. I will be focusing on the cultural evolution of the Chinese writing system. I'll be focusing on neo-racism in hip-hop. And lastly, I'll be focusing on cultural aspects of race. Let's get started. To start, we will dive right into how different cultures can impact one another in numerous ways. For example, sharing cultural beliefs, colonization, migration, and education. And technological advancements into media and our pop culture. Take Chinese writing, for example. It's gone through a lot of changes, partly because of the interactions with other cultures. The Qin Dynasty, for instance, standardized the script to bring everyone together and make communication easier. So yeah, other societies had a hand in shaping how Chinese people put words on paper. Conquest, migration, and alliance can totally shake up the social and political scenes. Take the Qin Dynasty again. They were all about bringing China together, partly because they saw what was happening in other places and wanted in on that unity action. So they standardized things like language and administration to keep everyone on the same page. Modern racism is based on colonization. However, what matters in my topic is not about colonization. Racism in hip-hop culture is caused by things that happened in the last few decades, like the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882. Interminority racism in the US and COVID-19 is more complicated and rooted than we thought of. Take the example of rapper YG setting one of his songs claiming that Chinese people should be targeted first if anyone is trying to commit a robbery because they don't believe in banks. But in other hands, he claimed himself raised a middle finger to racism in 2016 when Donald Trump became the president of the United States. In the Asian-American community, raves are known to be the it activities. Every weekend, people prepare to go to raves. Even me, I say things like I go through a week to go to a rave. Raves are part of the Asian-American community. However, other societies and other groups might see it as a weird or abstract part of our culture. People who have not been a part of raves just know us to be hashtag druggies or somewhere we go to get high, which is part of it, but not all of it. And I feel like people just don't understand. And I think it further discriminates the different communities. And I think people should mind their own business, but also take a moment to learn about what the culture is. Now we transition to how do cultures adapt and come together. Wait, but before that, please turn your attention to this ad. Dive into the Smooch Wave experience today and let your taste buds set sail on this unforgivable journey with this Smooch Wave. And we are back. Yes, we are. And now time to dive into the culture adaptation and how cultures come today in a society over time. Can you please start us off? To start, Chinese writing has changed a lot over time, showing how cultures adapt and mix. Each style, from oracle-born scripts to regular scripts, tell a story of how people communicate and express themselves. Like small seal scripts came during the time where China was split into many different states, but they came together under the Qin Dynasty. Later scripts like clerical, cursive, and semi-cursive were all about everyday writing needs, showing how society was changing. Plus, the government played a huge role in keeping the language alive by making rules and promoting literature. Overall, Chinese writing's journey tells us all about how cultures adapt and stay strong, mixing traditions with new ways of doing things. Moving on to Eggie. Hip-hop culture used to be the main force to fight racism. Rappers like Tupac take the legacy of Black Panther Party and Malcolm X. This kind of anti-racism idea also affects the Asian working class in the U.S. But racism against Asians is more and more common in modern hip-hop, especially after COVID-19. Racism is a lasting culture in the U.S., and even after color-race fighting it for more than 300 years, we still cannot wipe out racism in our society. Lastly, Aaliyah will be diving into the rave aspect of the culture adaption. I feel like the cultures come together when people feel unified. For example, raves have something called plural. Plural stands for peace, love, unity, and respect. These can be asked by giving each other bracelets at the raves, and in my case, I received a lot. And when I receive a bracelet, I turn happy and giggly for some reason. I know it's not much, but to a lot of people it means a lot, and it means a lot to a lot of other people that means. I think these little debriefings just bring the culture together and all of us together. Dang, after all that debriefing, I might need a music break. Please join us on this 30-second meditation break. Welcome back, everyone. On our final agenda for today, we will be focusing on how cultures resist change. I will start it off this time. I feel like cultures, when they're used to something, they don't want to change. I think it's like human nature, which is perfectly normal. We get used to something, we don't want to change. For raves, people resist change by gatekeeping. A lot of people just don't know what raves are because many people just tend to gatekeep because they want to stay in the community that they're comfortable in. To people in the community, we are accepting. To the people that are out, they're out. I guess it's something that we need to change, and now I'll pass it on. Cultures are all about keeping things the way they've always been, you know, like in Chinese history. When they were messing around with the writing system, they made sure to stick with what they knew. They had these scripts like the oracle-born script and the clerical script, and they were all about keeping everyone on the same page, literally. The government was all in on it, too. Passing policies to make sure they held on to their traditional values and kept society steady. In writing, that's not just about jotting stuff down. It's like a piece of their history and beliefs. So when someone tries to shake things up with their new script or style, people get worried. It's like messing with their identity, you know. They've got this deep connection to their symbols and language, and they're not about to let that go. So yeah, cultures, they're all about sticking to what they know best, even if the world around them is changing. Finally, awful culture can also keep resisting. Finally, racism does not only exist in one specific culture, but is a universal phenomenon that lasts for centuries. And for years, racists is finding supportive theories, trying to prove their idea is right, including inventing eugenics and use hateful speech like... Racism theory changed by the time after certain things happened, and the thrive of genetic research and COVID-19 changed their target race or excuse of being racist. But what has not changed is racist itself. It takes different forms to keep on existing. And now here's some rave music to put you guys on after this heavy topic. Welcome back, everyone. Our time is ending, unfortunately. But to summarize, we focus on the cultural aspects in many different ways. Culture can bring us together and also separate us. In order to prevent inseparation, we must learn to adjust and have an open mind to change. In addition, always be mindful of our surroundings as our thoughts are different to what other people think. Also treat other people how you want to be treated. But still, be you and involve. Thanks, y'all. Transcribed by https://otter.ai
