Diabetes is a group of diseases that cause high blood sugar. It happens when the body doesn't make enough insulin or when the cells don't respond to it properly. Insulin is a hormone that helps glucose enter cells for energy. What is diabetes? Diabetes, often referred to as diabetes mellitus, is a group of diseases that result in high blood sugar in the body. This condition occurs either because the body does not produce enough insulin or because the cells do not respond properly to the insulin that is produced. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that allows glucose to enter cells and be used as energy.
