Martin Luther King Jr. fought for equal rights for black people. He played a major role in the Civil Rights Movement and gave an inspirational speech called "I Have a Dream." He experienced discrimination as a child and later got kicked out of a bus, which led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The boycott was successful and black people no longer had to give up their seats for white people. Martin Luther King Jr.'s speech inspired the federal government to take action for equal rights. Sadly, his life was cut short when he was assassinated. Hi, my name is Debbie Petelman, and we will talk about Martin Luther King Jr. Have you ever wondered what it would be like if black people had no rights at all? Giving up bus seats, going to different bathrooms, going to different schools, too. Black people would have nothing fair like white people. This might be true if Martin Luther King Jr. did not do what he did. Martin Luther King Jr. is one of the only birthdays that the United States celebrates, other than George Washington. Because they both did very important things, George Washington being the first president, but Martin Luther King Jr. did something different. He majorly helped black people to have equal rights. He did a lot of things on the road for equal rights. Like his I Have a Dream speech at the Montgomery Bus Boycott. He inspired the Civil Rights Movement. When Martin Luther King Jr. was young, he had a white friend named Irent Curtis. They played with each other every day until they had to go to school. One day, one was for black children, another was for white children. Then one day, Irent Curtis told Martin Luther King Jr. that, My dad said that we can't be friends or play together again. This made Martin Luther King Jr. very mad. He experienced more depressions later on in his life. One time he got kicked out of a bus and that day. After Rosa Parks refused to give her seat to a white person, black people had enough so they started the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Martin Luther King Jr. got elected to be a leader for the Montgomery Bus Boycott. After almost a year, the Bus Boycott was successful. Afterwards, black people did not have to get up for white people to have seats. They could stay in their seats and not get kicked out. It was fair and one step closer to making it better for black people. His I Have a Dream speech was very inspirational. It made the federal government take more action towards black people having more equal rights. His speech also inspired me to write lots of big things. I'm a very good writer because of Martin Luther King Jr.'s big speech. Here's a part of it that I summarized. I have a dream that one day every valley shall be buried, every hill shall be high, and every mountain shall be small. All the rough places will be plains and all of the crooked places will be straight. All glory for the Lord shall get revealed and all the flesh shall come together. This is our hope. Martin was at the Lorne Motel. He went to the balcony to look at the sunlight one last time and said, Be sure to sing and bless the Lord tonight and sing it well. Then, bang, his life was cut short in front of his eyes.
