The podcast discusses the topic of advertisements in sports, focusing on college football, NBA, NHL, and MLB. It mentions the rise of advertisements in bowl games and how colleges are now putting ads on the field to generate revenue. The NBA was the first major league to allow ads on jerseys, followed by the NHL. The discussion also touches on the impact of ads on the game and the backlash faced by MLB for adding patches to jerseys. The NFL, despite its popularity and advertising efforts, does not have ads on jerseys. The podcast concludes by considering the reasons behind this decision and the NFL's focus on designated months for specific causes. And welcome to today's podcast as always I am your host David along with my co-host Amari and on today's topic We are going to talk about Advertisements and sports now I mean you play college football you especially you've seen the rise and Advertisements especially in these bowl games you got the all-state sugar bowl The what it used to be called was the Tostillos festival now Do you think do you think these college or these especially the NCAA? Is not only doing this to get money, but also are these helping these companies I think so too, and I think the main thing is especially now with a lot of colleges You see it more in the major leagues the MLB the NBA the NHL, but you don't really see it in football I mean you have the advertisements in game and during commercials and stuff But as of lately some colleges are actually now putting advertisements on the field which I think is a little strange But I think especially now with the name image and likeness all the money these college kids are making It makes sense that the colleges for them to make some sort of money back to pay more kids to play For their college that they have to put some sort of advertisement on there, so collegiately I believe it makes sense But it's definitely more centered around like the biggest Exactly and I think it's more programs that are trying to compete with those with those bigger with those bigger big dogs in the Conferences so like you're like you said like your Michigan's your Alabama's your Ohio State's are able because of just the historic programs and the money They've made from past They're able to pay the players more, but a program like I said you now who's in the college football playoffs Being being able back then they were in a death penalty for paying players now. I believe they are the most highest NIO paid college team in the country Which is very shocking Now now to switch switch more towards the major leagues When thinking about ads on jerseys a lot of people think of the NBA yeah, I personally think of them as the first real Major League sport to do it out on the court so statistically The NBA approved in in-game patches for sponsorships during the 2017 2018 Season Yes, so this is I believe a couple years after Nike took over the rights for the NBA It was both it was after because remember it used to be Reebok or not a Reebok. Sorry Adidas. It used to be a deal and when Nike bought the rights to Use it and create NBA jerseys the NBA wanted to gain more money, and so they decided to let teams allow one Sponsor per per team on the left side of their jerseys Yeah, like a business sponsor so I know the Charlotte Hornets right now have mr. Beeson's brand feast the Bulls The Chicago Bulls use Motorola. I knew the Milwaukee Bucks used to use Harley-Davidson. I don't know if they still do but What's great? What's crazy to believe is that just the year before me also in the 2016 NBA also game is when corporate logos were first seen on NBA jerseys for the first time Exactly and I believe it was Kia Kia used to always sponsor all-star weekend And then the NBA decided to let Kia put their logo on the actual jerseys Yes, they are and then what I find really cool though is while a lot of people think it was that NBA that started it is actually the NHL so back in 2010 the NHL allowed sponsors on practice jerseys They weren't seen out in the public It was another way for the NHL and these teams to make money But they weren't they weren't putting it out on jerseys you could buy now you could buy practice jerseys But I don't believe that they had the corporate logo on them themselves if you bought a practice jersey I think it was just like how you get an NFL jersey. There's different levels to it How they have like the basic one that's just like the iron-on numbers. I think that was the same thing with the practice jerseys Yeah, and then this year the NHL actually started allowing Ads on not only their regular jerseys, but also their helmets Exactly and then what's really cool is if you ever watch the hockey game the advertisements on the inside of the rink A lot of those are physically put there, but a lot of I know a lot of teams now have Make it a green screen or it's an electronic so more ads can pop up at one time Exactly yeah, and so Do you think it takes away from the game? Do you think it's more it's more distracting for casual viewers to constantly see an advertisement or do you think that? It's just now the way of the times And yes, it can be distracting No, I've seen the if you want to go back to the NBA either the finals the playoff course I've used that the playoffs all over now. It's kind of faded away So like it that casual viewing has changed, but it's like you didn't have the time to work. That's one of that exactly and I feel like Hockey is not the only thing that does a baseball does it to if you if you ever watch the baseball game? How it's looking behind the home plate a lot of teams put advertisements behind home plate Exactly now the science behind it makes sense if you're gonna see a logo constantly are you gonna see a company's name? You're gonna go if you don't know what it is. I don't look that company up Exactly because it's not only advertisements in games now that are catching people's attention I know in the past few years we've had advertisements during NFL games And I think everything really started popping off with just remembering iconic commercials Everyone remembers a bunch of iconic Super Bowl commercials I really think it popped off when Mountain Dew if you remember this the puppy monkey, baby We're there ever took Mountain Dew was advertising their kickstarts Yeah, that was at least for me. That's the first like polarizing iconic commercial. I can remember Yeah, mid-2010. I think quote maybe 2014 2015 around that time but What's really funny now? It's now you see it a ton not only during the Super Bowl I know a couple years ago We had I think maybe even actually the Burger King commercial that and it was just stuck in everybody's head last year was The Apple iPhone commercial and now it's a mix. It's a toss-up. No one really knows. It's kind of er, but I Think it's the army health insurance with with Robert on Kelsey. That's a constant one. That's aired You know, but you know, it's coming. Yeah, but then also that's what you're saying Like you see it in the game, but you also see it for the game. It's right. Let's say You can see the Doritos commercial put it on their bag. Like It's like World Series, you know Yeah but Staying on the topic of baseball the MLB now started adding patches to jerseys and I know it's faced a lot of Backlash for which is weird because Yeah, the advertisements first started coming out in the NBA and especially now the NHL everyone was a little like, okay Like we get it. You want to make more money? But it after after a few months or even a year it was understood like, okay But now with patches going on what it was considered and still considered to some America's pastime. You're taking away from the game Exactly Yeah Exactly Exactly and that's the problem with a lot I feel that a lot of these advertisers have is that they're taking away from what the game used to be the game used to be Just play your sport. You watch it. There's a few advertisements now They're trying to squeeze advertisements into any portion of the game that they can't Exactly Exactly the side-by-side view and The one the one major league that we don't really see ads on jerseys in is the NFL Which I which I for one find shocking now, maybe it's because Being the most popular sport, they don't want to it's going to add time to the game maybe but Realistically with how much they've done at with advertising, right? I mean Just the names of the stadium sometimes our advertisements in themselves. So Phi Stadium Lucas Oil Stadium exactly So I feel maybe that the NFL sees what it's doing to other major leagues and they don't want to face Major leagues and they don't want to face almost the backlash of it. You could say Exactly but I feel at the same time the NFL makes enough money during the playoffs During the Super Bowl and just during the regular season that they can okay. This is the company This this is our company. We're not going to let other companies come in and show their advertisements But I feel it on the same time. You could also talk about the fact that The NFL just doesn't want to do it simply because of Where they broadcast now the NBA has the broadcast rights to? ESPN TNT ABC YouTube TV, whatever But the NFL broadcasting on so many different channels Fox CBS and BC ESPN ABC so it's harder for them to maybe get approval if it's a company that Their broadcasting rights partner doesn't agree Exactly I Do too and I and I think especially with how the NFL does certain Months to designate to certain things. I consider that an advertisement in it themselves Like October I used to be they used to be breast cancer when they wanted to Yes, which is kind of I mean, I think that's point But it's kind of sometimes it kind of feels like it took away from the game seeing the pink out there I'm sorry, exactly Dude, the most iconic being rg3 his first year pink arm sleeves are pinked out And I think especially with how just how many different Styles of the game the NFL has and what I mean by that is especially if you look back on it this Thanksgiving weekend It used to just be Thanksgiving three games were played Lions played at 11 and Cowboys play at 3 and then there's a random night game at like 7 8 o'clock Now they designated John Madden Thanksgivings Which is understand more John Madden made Thanksgiving enjoyable to watch with his commentary and his turducken But the fact now that the NFL wants to advertise it is that and just how we were talking about earlier with all cancer awareness month Salute to service month and just everything I think the NFL makes enough money doing those sort of advertisements and promoting those charities and promoting just those specialty awareness things and especially today is that brought that special broadcast that NFL did with Disney and the Simpsons where they're going to broadcast Almost a cartoon version of the game with Simpsons characters playing certain positions Exactly So I think the NFL Main reason for not wanting to do jerk patches on jerseys as of right now. I do feel in the next Four or five years will we'll see it just because it'll make obviously the owners more money and at the end of the day Everything in the business But right now I think the NFL doing these specialty things and bringing in these brands that are iconic like you said Nickelodeon and it introduces it introduces the game not only to younger viewers But gets those younger viewers to brands that they may have already known but not known for a certain thing So not only if you were a kid watching Nickelodeon and your dad and you never really understood football Now you're watching exactly now you're watching Nickelodeon and football together I see you see a lot in motorsports. Yeah, I mean, I personally don't watch them. But from what I see It's got and especially a big one that we miss NASCAR NASCAR is all brands Exactly and and it's usually not just one brand. It's 20 30 brands all on one car Something that stands out something that stands out and catch people's attention And so talking just about NASCAR, let's keep on this topic for a little bit here There was a driver especially at the past a couple of years. You've seen a lot of different brands getting into NASCAR You've seen a common one M&Ms Mountain Dew Home Depot had one I think they still have one Go daddy.com had one for had one for a while but Lowe's has one exactly and so These brands are not only bringing Attention and catching people's attention that like NASCAR, but if you hear something Like oh, did you see the new Lowe's NASCAR people like what do you mean? Or they see it. It's like it's combining two things that don't go together It's getting jacked like you're being said it's a delivery company on a race car like a different system football Nike logo You've seen that okay sportswear the sports if you've seen a delivery company for race, you know There's like a different type of attention to the company So and especially now what came out recently is in the past couple of years Tyler Reddick's NASCAR team is sponsored by Jordan So especially not now you're getting in a whole new brand of sneaker hats Of that have grown up on the Jordan brand Know the Jordan brand for certain models of shoes and they're making his cars look like that certain colorway or that certain style of shoe exactly, so that's and especially That's the main brand of the car. That's the main logo that when going around people are going to see Yeah, and I think especially it's not really talked about it's kind of messed up to talk about but in NASCAR There's always a crash. There's always a big crash or whatever Speedway exactly But if you think about it when that cut when a car gets into the crash, what's going to be noticeable the logo? Exactly so you could say that maybe sometimes the bigger the crash maybe the more logo Fill a screen time that car gets Exactly it gets them but it gets on their screen time Exactly so the final thing I think we should talk about today is basically what do you think the mentality is of these? Commissioners and the different leagues and the MLB NHL MLB and even the NCAA We kind of talked about it a little bit today, but let's go. Let's go kind of into detail here We said the mentality of the NFL is maybe because they all they do with all these different Experiences and different months dedicated What about the MLB? What about the NHL? What about the NBA? I? Think especially now they had when they started the infusion tournament last year. It's just called the NBA Cup now I believe and it's paid a lot. I know I'm rich paid a lot of money But it is now recalled the NBA Emirates Cup so These companies are paying millions upon millions of dollars to get their name out to a brand that's already well-known Exactly draws more attention and now the mentality behind this is like as always If you put your name out there you make something iconic. It's going to make people remember you And I know in my past presentation we talked about like subliminal messaging how like the FedEx logo There's a between the e-max There's an arrow or the Amazon logo it has arrow from A to Z to show they have everything from A to Z So I think especially if you see these brands you see these logos. They're very iconic It's going to make you go, huh? I Didn't know that For example, let's we're making this up here. Let's say Amazon by Amazon sponsors a bowl game. Yeah. Okay, Amazon funds in the bowl game Okay, it's not just Mac team and a Mountain West Conference team. It's a Big Ten team and an SEC team Let's say it's going to draw more people and that and I think especially in college football now with all these bowl games being different Sponsored by different brands they get to choose what brand or what conference of teams they want to play in the bowl game That's why these teams get bowl game invites Exactly And The one thing we don't talk about advertisements on jerseys that College football kind of has that if you're an Under Armour school, if you're an Adidas school if you're a Nike school You're Jordan school You have that logo on your jersey If you're sponsored by a team, so yes, it's like how we're sponsored by Under Armour, we're not required to wear Just armor we can wear any brand we want Yes, yes, because they're sponsoring the team So Yeah, and that's and that's what's weird is that it didn't make sense But at the division one level if you're sponsored by a school You get some here, but you have to wear that brand gear Yes, so if you're there was a big case when Michael Jordan's son I believe was Marcus Jordan went to play for UCF. They weren't a Nike or Jordan brand school I forget what brand what brand sponsored them, but because his dad was Michael Jordan. He wore Jordans. He wore Nikes He got in trouble for it. I mean the the Basically brand that was sponsoring them said hey, we're gonna pull our sponsorship You're not allowed so you were sponsoring you were paying all this money to get you guys basketball shoes shorts with shirts, whatever We're gonna pull our brunt. We're gonna pull our brand Just from one player because he and he was told to change it I feel I feel like that was but For them to pull it because Marcus Jordan, I believe refused to wear because that is that Michael Jordan, which is understandable so just the concept and mentality of having one person on your team change everything because The brand doesn't like the other brand you're wearing Exactly there's always competition and it's really always about money. That's the main thing Exactly and actually I think made UCF more iconic They got in the papers exactly and especially if you have if you're Michael Jordan's son, you're gonna be in the papers either way But I think that that controversy and it happened recently too, I forget what collegiate basketball team it was But their team was in Adidas sponsored school I believe and they were caught in like a preseason game a preseason tournament this year wearing Nike branded stuff And so everyone was all well, maybe because it's a preseason game like they haven't gotten their gear yet The spot the team that was sponsoring them pulled their pull their rights But what what later came out was is that their contract was in negotiations for an extension and The school the school in the program wanted more money the brand again. I don't remember what school or brand It was it was a semi big division one basketball school, but they pulled They pulled their brand because they're like you're asking too much money and then your players are gonna go out and wear their own stuff anyway Yeah, so their stuff got full and I believe they became a Nike school Exactly Well, it looks like that's all the time we have for today again. I'm already. Thank you for stopping on this podcast as my co-host I really appreciate it. And one thing I want to leave off on is a question of everybody if you had to choose an advertisement For your jersey or for your league or even your business What? Advertisement, would you choose and would you let them dictate how big how small of an incorporation they have on your business? Once again, have a great day and enjoy this podcast
