The LGFA leagues have concluded and the championships won't start for a couple of weeks. There is a big fixture coming up for Gráinne-Wills, who will be playing Carla Stran in a Division 2 League Shield semi-final, which is essentially a relegation final. Whoever loses will be relegated to Division 3 for next season. Gráinne-Wills is also playing in the West Galway Senior and Junior Championships. In golf, there were winners in different divisions for the Member Stableford competitions. In Carrick Racing, there were several winners in different categories. In equestrian, there were various winners in different classes at the Ballycinelli show. And in sailing, there were results from the Kilkearon and Roundstone races organized by the Galway Hooker Association. Paul Gannon here with your Monday Night Sports round-up starting with the LGFA and things are very quiet at the moment, particularly in Underage, where leagues have concluded and championships won't be commencing for another couple of weeks. Just one big fixture on the horizon and that's for Gráinne-Wills who play Carla Stran, in letter of fact, this coming Thursday, the 25th of July at half-seven, in a Division 2 League Shield semi-final, but in reality this is a relegation final. Gráinne-Wills found themselves in the same situation last year and they managed to overcome St. Brendan's to preserve their Division 2 Intermediate League status. So that's the massive prize that's up for grabs. Whoever loses is relegated to Division 3 for next season, whoever wins retains their Intermediate League status. That game is on at half-seven. Gráinne-Wills also playing in the West Galway Senior and Junior Championships, the regional competition, these past few weeks and they will play Salt Hill Naknakara A in the West Galway Senior Championship Final after Salt Hill Nakara had a comprehensive victory over St. James' in their second group match there last week. No date confirmed yet for this one but hopefully it'll be Thursday or Friday week. Gráinne-Wills B team are in the West Galway Junior B Championship Final and they will know their opponents after tomorrow night's encounter between Father Griffin's Arrow Ogg and the Pearsie in Crestwood. Whoever wins that match will play Gráinne-Wills B in this year's West Galway Junior B Championship Final. So two big regional finals there for Gráinne-Wills adult players to look forward to. Golf next. And now the blue-ribboned event of the regatta which of course is the men's and ladies' six-oar canvas competition starting with the ladies and it was a victory there for the Carna Ross Muck combination of Róisín Hénia, Marg Breach, Brannach and Bernie Shoya. In fourth place were the Kerry Galway combination of Eileen Quirk, Ailish Dean and Kate Fáilain. The men's senior six-oar canvas final winners were John Cara Rowe, Michael Fáilain, Christopher Day who's a native of Inishbuffin and Shane McDonagh. In a sheer from Ilan Aran were runners-up there, Sean Shari, Thomas Shari and Marcin Shoya. Carna Ross Muck were third, Joe Rua Shoya, Marcin Ó Mulkíroann and Michal Ó Mulkíroann. And the Ross Muck-Roundstone combination comprising Noel Griffin, Conor McDonagh and Padraig Canavan, they came in fourth in that final. The winners there, Cara Rowe, Michael Fáilain, Christopher Day and Shane McDonagh. Carna Ross Muck were runners-up there, Joe Rua Shoya, Marcin Ó Mulkíroann and Michal Ó Mulkíroann. The Conamara-Dune-Bay combination were third there, Marcin Hénia, Michal Sullivan and Owen Honan. And in fourth place there were the Roundstone and Ross Muck combination of Noel Griffin, Conor McDonagh and Colin McDonagh. And finally to wrap up a very comprehensive set of results there sent in to us by Michael King and a huge thanks to Michael for sending those in. The single man race, the Fixor, and the winner was Christopher Day, the aforementioned Christopher from Inishbuffin and he edged out Conor McDonagh from Roundstone there in that race. And congratulations to Gareth Curran-McCullen, the overall champion at the show, and also to Grace Murphy-Galway, who was the reserve champion. Thanks again to Mary Madden for submitting those results. As we return to maritime matters now, with the sailing results from rounds four and round five of the summer regattas organised, of course, by Cumann na Húchairí, the Galway Hooker Association. It's about nine different legs in the overall competition, and we're just concerned locally with the Kilkearon and the Roundstone. So Kilkearon was round four. And results from the Kilkearon races were as follows. In the Gloach O'Gaibh Beoiga League 1, first, Cúil na Máire, second, Bádh Cúil Beoig, and third, Niamh Féihín. The Gloach O'Gaibh Beoiga League 2 winner there was Bádh Fáthir Cártair. In second place, Inis Bearrachán, and third, Niamh Mac Darra. In the Gloach O'Gaibh Móire section, it was Niamh Aine the winner, followed by St Catharine with Niamh Ciarán in third. In the Lat Wadge category, it was first, Niamh Antinna, and second, Nóra. And in the Bádh Móire, the Hookers, it was on Tony sa Céadach and on True Light sa Darrachach. So they were the Kilkearon results a couple of weeks ago. And then we have the Roundstone results from the weekend. Gloach O'Gaibh Beoiga League 1, first, Niamh Steffan, second, Niamh Féihín, and third, Cúil na Máire. Gloach O'Gaibh Beoiga League 2, first, An Talaanach, second, Niamh Mac Darra, and third, Lady Chantel. In the Gloach O'Gaibh Móire class, it was first, St Catharine, second, Niamh Aine, and third, Niamh Ciarán. In the Lat Wadge, it was the Nóra that came out on top there yesterday. And finally, in the Bádh Móire Hooker class, it was the same outcome in Roundstone as it was previously in Kilkearon. The winner there on Tony, followed by on True Light in second place. I won't be giving out results from the other rounds of that competition as they don't pertain to the catchment area of Connemara Community Radio, but if you have an interest in the sailing and want to follow that, all results will be up on the Galway Hookers Association website for anyone who's interested. And I wrap up tonight with GAA, starting with results from the weekend and buying the Primary Junior Championship West Round 1. Father Griffin 0-0, 2-12. Rinnewealia 1-11. Rinnewealia 5 points up there in the first half, but things didn't go so well in the second half and they lose their opening championship match in Cresswood. Clonburgh 1-12. Carnacashel 2-12. The next round of matches in that competition is a bank holiday weekend. Rinnewealia are at home to Clonburgh and Carnacashel actually have a bye and Father Griffin 0-0 then are in action against the fifth team and the overwhelming favourites to win that competition on Carrow Rua. There'll be three teams progressing. The top team after the Round Robin phase will be through to the Westport Championship Final with second and third playing a semi-final, so still all to play for in that championship. Junior B League West Shield Final. Father Griffin 0-0 against Carnacashel, which was to have taken place yesterday, may not have taken place because there was no result up, so I've no result to give out on that one. If anyone has that result, they might send it through to the programme. Under 13, Division 3A Championship. Ormour-Marie 3-3. Carnacashel-Napiersey 3-12. St Gabriel's 7-12. Clifton 3-7. Under 13, Division 5 Championship. Clonburgh 1-4. Caltra 6-10. Under 15, Division 3 West. Ormour-Marie 10-20. Carnacashel-Napiersey 6-5. Clifton 6-13. Clare Galway 3-6. Under 17, Sea Championship West. N'Gonna-Lichamore 5-11. Clonburgh 12 points. And Clonburgh 13 points. Clifton 2-14. There were under 12 matches played yesterday between Carnacashel and Barna. Clifton against Renfeil, and Clonburgh against Courten-Shamrock. No results to hand on them. It may well be GAA policy that they're not putting out results at under 12 level. I know that is the policy in LGFA, so it may be the same situation with the GAA. And finally, fixtures for the week ahead. Tonight, Monday 22 July. Under 17, Sea West Championship. Carnacashel-Napiersey at home to Unspidhill. That's in the plantation at half seven. Tomorrow, Tuesday 23 July. Under 15, 4A Championship Quarter Final. Big game for Clonburgh in Clonburgh against Monavie Abbey. Under 15, 3B Championship Quarter Final. Carnacashel-Napiersey, they're playing Menlo Park-Pierces from North East Galway. That game is going ahead at 7pm in Inverne. So the best of luck there to Clonburgh and Carnacashel under 15s in the knockout phase of their respective championships. Wednesday coming, the 24th of July. Under 19, Sea West Championship. N'Gonna-Lichamore against Clifton at 7.30pm in Lechamore. And Carnacashel-Napiersey, they're at home to Octoward at 7.30pm in Carna. And finally, next Friday, the 26th of July. Under 17, Sea Championship West. Clifton and I on Spidhill. That's at half seven in Clifton. And N'Gonna-Lichamore and I, Carnacashel-Napiersey, also at Lahore-Theresa Shacht. And that one is on in Lechamore. That's my luck for tonight. Hello, good evening listeners. Welcome to Talk Sport on this Monday evening on a very busy weekend of sport. The headlines Clare Oust Cork in an epic All-Ireland Hurling Final in Crow Park and the other headlines I suppose the build up to the All-Ireland Football Final we will have Kerry and I should think we will have Galway and Armagh the weekend and in the Ladies Final the following week it will be Galway and Kerry. It almost was a double for Galway and Armagh in the men's and women's but Kerry ousting the Armagh team there and they will be formidable opponents for Galway in the final. So in other sport the British Open the golf was won by Xander Shockley in an epic battle there against the elements over the course of the weekend Shane Lowry was very much in contention for the first two to three days but fell away and Justin Rose was the runner up there and we are coming into the week of the Olympic Games starting on the 26th of July I should say to the 11th of August and it's going to be two weeks of epic sporting activity there and a lot of Irish medal prospects there as well so we look forward to that and over the course of the next hour we hope to talk to Francie Foley on JAA matters both looking back at the hurling and possibly looking forward to the football and we might touch on some other sports as well So we're going to go with our first interview of the evening and it's the one and only Francie Foley Good evening to you Francie Good evening Bernard Nice to hear you again Nice to have you along So it's very hard to keep up to speed with all of the sport that's going on we've been chatting over the last couple of weeks Francie and there's so much going on but again the weekend that has gone hasn't disappointed so we'll get on to JAA matters in a while but we'll just touch on the golf the British Open it's the last major of the season and for a while Ireland were hoping now at the start they were hoping for Rory McIlroy to do make up for his performance in the US Open but that didn't go according to plan and then Shane Lowry was in the running as well were you keeping an eye on it over the weekend Francie? Yeah well I was already looking at it because I don't have I didn't have the channel but I saw a good bit of it elsewhere and I was so happy that Lowry was doing well because I know the conditions were bad but he was doing mighty for two days and I had a feeling that this could have been his trodden again but then I suppose like in every sport the unexpected happens and I think he was joint 6th or 6th in the end but he had a couple of great days now overall I think the conditions were pretty rough up there in Scotland but how and ever he felt himself that he was in great shape and he felt that he could have had success but it didn't happen and then of course we had the other Padraig Harrington and then we had the other Irishman and then we had King Lowry himself and he went out before the game before it even started and you know I'm always saying he's a great clerk and everything else but he's a damnable man for excuses and even that night I held him after being a failure after he didn't make the cut he was saying that the conditions were atrocious he didn't use that word but he said they were so bad and didn't suit his game and everything else but I mean Lowry when he was joint 6th or 6th he was just dignified about the results and his performance and he wasn't making every excuse and there wasn't but there were some great golfers in it and I thought I thought a lot of them the Americans and other guys I thought they handled the conditions pretty well but I didn't hear any of them saying how bad it was that they were unable even to continue a play golf so anyway Now I know on the Thursday and Friday the first two days were pretty dodgy as regards wind and rain and I know McIlroy possibly got the worst of the conditions now himself and Tiger Woods were looking there was a lot but I think Rory after the two days was 13 over which is a huge amount and I think Woods as well was very high scoring and a number of the other top players certainly I think as regards the conditions maybe for Lowry part of the reason I think he was doing so well he did get slightly favourable conditions on the Thursday and the Friday but they were still tricky position it's just a look at the draw on any given day you have to take the weather that's before you but he was on seven under on the Saturday there and going well and it just they slipped away because it was a tricky course and the bogeys don't belong it's not sometimes the single bogeys but the double bogeys can affect you and put you back down the field and he would have been disappointed but I thought it was amazing I thought for the first three days it was quite interesting but I think it certainly developed because there were so many players could have won it on the final day and you know you had the others like Justin Rose who had a former winner as well but I suppose Lowry he won in 2-19 and he's always a good bet to be there yeah indeed but as I said you know there was talent there and all like in every game that's you know the conditions can have an effect in lots of sports like rugby particularly and anyway he's a credit to himself and he's certainly he has a big fan base and people like him because of his sincerity and because as well of his modesty and his strong GA links with the Offaly footballers there and his dad the former Offaly All-Ireland winner I think and very often he gives a little promo for the sporting affairs in Offaly there but Xander Shopley was the winner there he had I think was 9 9 under and he came through the field to go I think from 3 under to 9 under and with all of the pressure that was on him and of course he's the second major of the year so he's certainly dining at the top table he won the PGA a few weeks ago as well so as I said Justin Rose is the former US Open winner and a couple of them are in the hunt for a couple of the South African as well but overall decent enough competition and it's the four majors over for the year now and of course Rory McIlroy are failing to get one of them in the competition as I said so we'll see what the rest of the year holds will be lots of competitions coming up in the golf and I suppose they'll be all eyeing up for places down the line as well but I suppose they'll be there as one of the more talented but he needs to maybe kick on to win a few more of the top prizes yeah indeed and I always even though I'm not a fan but I always acknowledge that he has been and is and we know and I want to elaborate on that taken away from his garden but his personal life was his own and about changing his mind etc etc that's his own business and of course the other thing apart from those were I suppose his battling against the LIV tour and we know that he's been a spokesperson I think he's too much of a spokesperson and less of a golfer and it's not getting any easier because there's a lot of talented golfers out there so it'll be nice to see him add to it but maybe concentrate a little bit on the golf on the course stuff rather than the off the field politics and that but we'll see how that goes I think it's going to be interesting to see Ireland compete in the European Championships because it gives a great it gives it's one place we have a great Irish representative body and I look forward to it and something very much to look forward to and I think it's going to be interesting to see Ireland do well in the boxing they've got a lot of medals and the likes of Adeleke the lady in the 400 metres and some of the other athletes from other sporting countries there'll be possibly world records and there'll be all sorts of stuff going on it's a great two weeks of sport and as I said we have it every four years and as I said I'm sure it'll be great entertainment it'll be interesting to see the next few weeks so I think as I said it gets underway there on the Friday on the 26th and we have big Irish numbers going out taking part which is an added interest for all of us and some of the minor sports as well sailing we've got medals but you know you might not always of course the rowing with the lads from Cork there in it the brothers and we've as I said punched above our weight in some of those sports but the boxing will always be a good one both the men's and the women's there's a few that should compete well and give us a little bit of confidence and a little bit of confidence and a little bit of confidence and a little bit of confidence and a little bit of confidence and a little bit of confidence and a little bit of confidence and
