You are very welcome to senior side of the street here on Connemara Community Radio this Sunday the 5th of January 2025. Thanks to Tom Mongan for his foot-tapping show. Lots of great music as always. For the next hour we are delighted to bring you a wonderful concert with Greenshine recorded at the 2024 Clifton Arts Festival. Greenshine is a family trio comprising of Noel Shine, Mary Green and their daughter Ellie. Their material straddles the boundaries of contemporary folk and roots and includes many self-penned songs. Their fast-picking and close harmonies are a treat to the ear. We hope you enjoy. Okay, I'm Kevin here, a manager in Clifton Town Hall and you're all very welcome. Thank you very much. The audiences have been amazing in Clifton Town Hall. It's wonderful to have you all in and we're going to have some wonderful music now in a short while. I had this pleasure having this group because the Arts Festival, I've been a part of the Arts Festival since I was 11 in the community school or 12 maybe and Brendan Flynn was my English teacher that time and I got to see the Water Boys and the Dubliners and all these kind of wonderful acts in the school. And, you know, it's not the acts you know, it's the acts that you discover in the Arts Festival. It was wonderful. So as manager in the hall, I had the pleasure of having Greenshine here a couple of years ago. We were trying to figure out when we couldn't, but we recognised each other, we knew each other and they're lovely people and the smiles are the first thing you notice and then obviously their wonderful musical talents. So can you please welcome to stage please, Mary Green, Noel Shine and their lovely daughter Ellie. So it's lovely to be back in Clifton again. It's always a pleasure and an honour. Right, so we're going to start off with a song called All Good Times and it's a bit mad. One, two, three, four. Good times came, good times gone Back up the bus and let me on I haven't had enough of a good time yet Don't tell me, that's all I get Wreck my bond, you commit a crime Give me back my old good time Give me back my old good time I'll make a slap or kill a strife Don't you dare wreck my old good time Put it all around in bed all day I earned the right to feel that way Wouldn't put a dog through what I've been through No one to blame, no one to sue Wreck my bond, you commit a crime Give me back my old good time I'll make a slap or kill a strife Don't you dare wreck my old good time All I want is to walk on the beach, metal man chips and waltzes Kick about on a summer's day, that's the life we ought to Dinner and a glass of wine, karaoke in the car I feel fine, so many good times gone behind So many more to go No one to blame, no one to sue Wreck my bond, you commit a crime Give me back my old good time I'll make a slap or kill a strife Don't you dare wreck my old good time I'll make a slap or kill a strife No death, no sleepy time They're going to kill my old good time Wreck my bond, you commit a crime Let me have my old good time Don't you rock my boat, don't you foul my line Don't you dare wreck my old good time Side step, sucker punch, sorry they're in trouble, out to lunch Jump for the shoes as the plane goes down Floating gently to the ground We're going to unleash Ellie on you now There's a song called The Girl in the Lavender Dress Thank you Which came out on an album of the same name In the year 2016 I believe Near Dot Near Dot And it had some success for us So we're very grateful to the song And to everybody who played it And there's a little sing-y bit at the end If you're not too shy I'll give you a nod The Girl in the Lavender Dress The Girl in the Lavender Dress A gathering flower She doesn't care about numbers or noticing them She feels the wind on her face Sees the grass start to move She's floating away She's finding her groove All through the rain And all through the day The Girl in the Lavender Dress Making her way She knows she's destiny's playing Playing hidden mistress's child She wants to believe The world wants to be kind She is the hum of the city rumbling low She's got a backpack of wishes She's ready to go She has a feeling inside her Of love being poor The moon's on its back The moon's on its back In the arms of the morning All through the night And all through the day The Girl in the Lavender Dress Making her way She knows she's destiny's playing Hidden mistress's child She wants to believe The world wants to be kind The sweet voice of fortune is drifting from over the hill It says, I know you can open tomorrow I hope that you will The world will be laid out before you If you take the chance The forces of grace are conspiring To play while you dance While you dance While you dance While you dance While you dance While you dance The Lavender Dress The Sowering Cloud While you dance The Lavender Dress The Sowering Cloud Okay, we're going to do a song called The Bramble and the Rose. This is a song I learned from a great bluegrass player called Jody Stecker. The Bramble and the Rose We've been so close together Each a candle, each a flame All the days we were outsiders We knew them all by name See how the bramble and the rose It's what I need A rose like the bramble and the rose Often cruel and often kind I've hurt you and it hurts me Just to see what we can do To ourselves and to each other Never really needed to See how the bramble and the rose It's what I need A rose like the bramble and the rose Around each other they will wind The Bramble and the Rose Oh, put your arms around me We'll sing a true love song And we'll learn to sing together Laugh and sing the whole night long See how the bramble and the rose It's what I need A rose like the bramble and the rose Around each other they will wind See how the bramble and the rose It's what I need A rose like the bramble and the rose Around each other they will wind Around each other they will wind White Trails Beyond the Grief There's a house on the road Where nobody goes So it's left there all alone It used to be A place where we would kick back And lay down our heavy load We would be living there yet I took off Cause I ran out of breath I'll never leave completely Look up and you'll see White Trails Against a big blue sky And that little house And that little white flame You saw yesterday in the sky Well, maybe it was mine Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh That's another little singing thing Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh Don't fret my sweet I know we'll meet again Till then I'll keep you in my sight I know it won't be easy But keep your chin up Just to please me And don't give in to the night Now and then Go back and warm your toes By the fire in the house Where no one goes I'll never leave completely Look up and you'll see White Trails Against a big blue sky And that little white flame You saw yesterday in the sky Well, maybe it was mine Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh You know we always love to fly Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh Reach out and touch the sky Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh The clouds will wrap around and wind you Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh And I just want my stars behind you I'll never leave completely Look up and you'll see White Trails Against a big blue sky That little white flame You saw yesterday in the sky Well, maybe it was mine I'll never leave completely Look up and you'll see White Trails Against a big blue sky That little white flame You saw yesterday in the sky Well, maybe it was mine Thanks very much. Thank you. Right, so we carry on with a song called Don't Mind If I Do and this is my attempt to replace a Bob Dylan song in our set called I'll Be Your Baby Tonight. I said we have to get a song that's kind of raunchy like that and, you know, and replace the Dylan song with an original so now we do both of them. Every night. But apart. Don't mind if I do All right. One, two, three, four. I don't mind if I do I'll tag along with you I don't know where you've been Don't know where you're going I know that you Come sit and talk to me Tell me what it is you see Come tell me all your tricks You'll be knowing What I deal with me Holding up a chair right next to me In the dim blue light of a mute TV See your eyes light up as I make you laugh And I'm happy Death and sound is everywhere I'm a summer friend Throw me the lifeline of your smile You'll relax as I float in the sea of tears Holding up a chair right next to me In the dim blue light of a mute TV See your eyes light up as I make you laugh And I'm happy Trust you in the way I can trust no other And nobody can trust me And just before you ask I'm equal to the tab Cause it's worth sorting through your stuff The evidence in your green eyes Is proof enough Holding up a chair right next to me In the dim blue light of a mute TV See your eyes light up as I make you laugh And I'm happy And I'm happy Thanks a lot, thank you I'm going to do a song now called Lay Down the Burden of Your Heart It's a song written by Jesse Winchester Lay Down the Burden of Your Heart It's a cold, cold world that we're living in Lay down the burden of your heart But it's warm as toast walking two by two Lay down the burden of your heart Lay down the burden of your heart I know you'll never miss it Go show your daddy where it hurts And let your daddy kiss it It's the thin, thin line between love and hate It's hard to tell the two apart But what strength I have, I offer you Lay down the burden of your heart Lay down the burden of your heart I know you'll never miss it Go show your daddy where it hurts And let your daddy kiss it It's the cold, cold world that we're walking through They ought to tell you at the start But it's warm as toast walking two by two Lay down the burden of your heart Lay down the burden of your heart I know you'll never miss it Go show your daddy where it hurts And let your daddy kiss it Lay down the burden of your heart I know you'll never miss it Go show your daddy where it hurts And let your daddy kiss it Go show your daddy where it hurts And let your daddy kiss it Go show your daddy where it hurts And let your daddy kiss it Go show your daddy where it hurts And let your daddy kiss it Go show your daddy where it hurts And let your daddy kiss it Go show your daddy where it hurts And let your daddy kiss it Go show your daddy where it hurts Last light in the iron sky Dark news from the east Whole lot of bad vibes going around Don't think before we speak Everybody is an expert now And everybody's got something to say Go to sit here on the fence Not giving too much away There's lots of people about to get hurt If everybody shoots from the hip All around the sacred town Stampede off the cliff To the sound of a nature rift What happened to all of this together What happened to all for what What happened to sip up her lip What happened to caring for everyone When did we take our love away When did bitches start prowling the hall When did it all come tumbling down When did we build the wall Suddenly we're on a choppy sea In a dodgy, leaky, older trip Roll back the dice to the time Before there was a serious shift And the sound of a nature rift Ooh Ooh Ooh I like us better When we pull together Everybody try and play nice Everybody try and play nice Try and play nice Astronaut looking down from above Has a little blue ball in his thigh Can't see the crunched up traces The scared heart causing the bite All he sees is that little blue ball And how very lovely it hits Can't hear the argument For the feeling that it's all a twist Just sees the home that he longed for And the people that he loves down there Knows what's important It matters cause it's so damn rare Precious glowing gift Back beyond the nature rift Back beyond the nature rift Thank you very much. Thank you. Thanks very much. Thank you. So I resurrected this one. It's called Newman on Friday. Newman on Friday There was a time when the dreams that were mine Were yours as well my dear Till they drifted slowly to the ground And faded like the falling years I saw the light of love in your eyes And that love once set us free Now it's the darkness of beauty That keeps you here with me There's a new moon on Friday It'll give you the strength to go That same new moon will light my way To the truth that I must know Love cannot be a chain of gold Love must be a key And I open up my heart now So you can fly away from me I am no angel I am no saint I'm a fallen idol in a chapel of light Crumbling plaster and peeling paint It'll be a lie if you see these smiles As I lead you to the door And there'll be times when I will curse you And wonder what our love was for There's a new moon on Friday It'll give you the strength to go That same new moon will light my way To the truth that I must know To the truth that I must know Love cannot be a chain of gold Love must be a key And I open up my heart now So you can fly away from me And there were never any angels in this house Just the light of love And now the light's gone out Love cannot be a chain of gold Love must be a key And I open up my arms now So you can fly away from me I open up my arms now So you can fly away from me Thank you. If you let me walk with you, I will love you. I'm going to do a song that was recorded by Charlie Poole in the beginning of the 20th century and it's called The Hesitation Blues. The Hesitation Blues Well, if the river was whiskey and I was a duck I'd dive to the bottom and I'd never come up And tell me how long do I have to wait Can I catch you now or must I hesitate If the river was whiskey and the branch was viney You'd find me in there any old time And tell me how long do I have to wait Can I catch you now or must I hesitate Well, I was born in Ireland and raised in France I bought a suit of clothes and they forgot to send the pension Tell me how long do I have to wait Can I catch you now or must I hesitate Born in Alabama and raised in Tennessee If you don't like my peaches, don't shake my tree How long do I have to wait Can I catch you now or must I hesitate Well, I look down the road as far as I can see Every man has a woman and the blues has me And how long do I have to wait Can I catch you now or must I hesitate I got the Hesitation stockings and the Hesitation shoes I swear to the Lord I got the Hesitation blues How long do I have to wait Can I catch you now or must I hesitate Well, if the river was whiskey and I was a duck I'd dive to the bottom and I'd never come up And tell me how long do I have to wait Can I catch you now or must I hesitate Can I catch you now or must I hesitate Can I catch you now or must I hesitate Thanks very much. Thank you. Thank you very much. We'll do an oldie but a goodie. One of my favorite singers of all time is Patsy Cline and I learned this one from her excellent singing. It's another sad country song for you. Tell me, where did you meet Patsy? Well, we go way back, actually. We had an encounter with a man in St. Louis one time. He was a temporary man living in St. Louis. Kilkenny. Oh, sorry. Kilkenny man living in St. Louis. And anyone that you would mention to him, he had met them. Very recently, like. One night, one of us mentioned Patsy Cline. He said, ah, poor old Patsy, she's a lovely soul. She's a lovely soul. Like, the woman was dead about 50 years. Nice poor devil, he said. Nice poor devil, he said. Nice poor devil, Patsy. Nice poor chancellor, you know. All right. He knew Willie Nelson as well. Yeah, he knew Willie Nelson, yeah. And John Primes. John Primes. John Primes. I dream dreams of you Every night I go through Why can't I forget you And start my life anew Instead of having sweet dreams about you You don't love me, it's plain I should know I'll never wear your ring I should hate you the whole night through Instead of having sweet dreams about you You don't love me, it's plain I should hate you the whole night through I should hate you the whole night through Sweet dreams of you Things I know can't come true Why can't I forget you And start loving someone new Instead of having sweet dreams about you Thank you. That's on the album as well, the last one, isn't it? Yeah. So we're going to let you off now to continue your day, your most interesting day, elsewhere. This is our last song and we hope that you enjoy the rest of the festival. It's an extraordinary festival and we're always so honoured and so lucky to be brought back here and thanks very much Brendan for bringing us back. It's always a pleasure and hopefully we'll see you again in a few years' time. Don't want to be hogging it, but we kind of do like. Thanks very much to Aidan on sound. Brilliant. Much appreciated. And Millie, Millie also. And Kevin for the use of the hall. So we'll finish off with this one. This is one you'll probably know, which is why we usually finish off with it. So get your gospel on and join us. This is a song called... Our Flyway. Exactly. See how to be tested on life. Yeah, yeah. Some bright morning when this life is over I'll fly away To that home on God's blessed shore I'll fly away Here it comes. I will fly away, oh glory I will fly away in the morn When I die, hallelujah, by and by I'll fly away When the shadows of this life are gone I'll fly away Like a bird from these prison walls outside I'll fly away I will fly away, oh glory I'll fly away in the morn When I die, hallelujah, by and by I'll fly away Oh, how glad and happy when we meet I'll fly away No more cold iron shackles on my feet I'll fly away I will fly away, oh glory I'll fly away in the morn When I die, hallelujah, by and by I'll fly away Just a few more weary days and then I'll fly away To a land where joys never end I'll fly away I will fly away, oh glory I'll fly away in the morn When I die, hallelujah, by and by I'll fly away I will fly away, oh glory I'll fly away in the morn When I die, hallelujah, by and by I'll fly away I will fly away, oh glory I'll fly away in the morn When I die, hallelujah, by and by I'll fly away When I die, hallelujah, by and by I'll fly away I will fly away, oh glory I'll fly away in the morn Close your eyes, close the door You don't have to worry Anymore I'll be your baby tonight Shut the lights, shut the shades You don't have to be afraid I'll be your baby tonight Well, that mockingbird is gonna sail away We're gonna forget it And that pink-flag moon is gonna shine like the sun We're gonna let it We won't regret it, take your shoes off And do not fear Bring that bottle over here I'll be your baby tonight Well, that mockingbird is gonna sail away We're gonna forget it And that pink-flag moon is gonna shine like the sun We're gonna let it We won't regret it, take your shoes off And do not fear Bring that bottle over here I'll be your baby tonight I'll be your baby tonight Thank you very much. Thank you very much. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thanks a lot. That's great. You were listening to a recording of the group Greenshine, recorded at the Clifton Arts Festival in September 2024.
