Learn moreThe program is sponsored by Kymore Abbey and Gardens. The weather has been snowy and cold. There have been power outages, but hopefully, things are getting better. There are upcoming sports events and a new sport is being introduced. The Irish national team had mixed results in the Nations League and will have a two-legged playoff against Bulgaria in March. The team is going through a transition with some older players retiring and young players coming up. There is hope for the future with promising young players in the U21 team. However, there is a lack of top-level players at big clubs. Some players are getting limited game time and may need to go on loan. This program is kindly sponsored by Kymore Abbey and Gardens, 095 52001. Good evening guys and welcome to Injury Time here on Kymore Community Radio. It is Friday the 22nd of November. It is a snowy, cold and wet weekend. The last few days have been pretty heavy snow and unfortunately the roads have been pretty poor but hopefully you are all keeping safe out there and hopefully a lot of people have restored electricity and the rest as I say. It has been a tough few days for a lot of people without the power so hopefully you are back with a bit of power and hopefully you can get nice and warm in the house for the weekend and obviously there is plenty of sport this weekend with West Coast coming up and then we will give a small mention to the upcoming events as well within the club and then the rugby have a weekend off and then obviously the off-season is for Renfeld and Clifton GAA have the off-season as well but there is plenty of action on the front as well with a new sport on the horizon and we will speak a bit more about that later on in the show but we are going to go straight into the tick of action. The international break has just been finished but the live draw this morning for the Leeds League play-off were done and it has been a lucky one for the Irish international with the announcement of Bulgaria two-legged fixtures in March, away in the first leg and at home in the second leg but on the line I have the ever-present Ronald Coleman. Great to talk to you Damien. I am sure you were in the Viva for the 1-0 win against Finland, Finland had a lot of possession and a lot of chances but obviously Cuevo and Tedder came to the rescue with a penalty save later on in the game but Evan Perkins and Tedder proved a decisive winner on that occasion in the Viva on Thursday as well so it was a big win as well and they needed that bit of confidence going into the England game. Indeed Damien, we were in a group as you said yourself, we were in the four-team group, we had the two top teams there, Greece and England who battled it out at the top of the table and Greece surprisingly had a very good win over England in Wembley but England ended up topping the group but as you said yourself, Heimer Halgrimson, I am still finding it very difficult to pronounce his name fully, we will call him Heimer anyway, Heimer's team Anyway, we were lucky really that we had Finland in the group, we were able to get the two wins over Finland, the away win in Helsinki which was 2-1 for Ireland and then as you said yourself, Evan Ferguson's goal there at home in the Viva. You said yourself at the start, mixed results for Ireland, I wouldn't even say mixed results, not good results at all for Ireland and really a poor start for the new manager but we certainly need to have some time, just looking at the scores, they were conceded 12 goals in 6 games so you know yourself, 2 a match there. So one of our traditional strengths is always defending and generally keeping a tight ship but that appears to have gone by the wayside in recent months and probably recent years as well but look we look forward to, you were going to mention there about possibly the England game and also our play-off opponents. Our play-off opponents was announced at 11am this morning and the draw was probably a kind draw for Ireland, they have a two-legged game against Bulgaria, most likely in Sofia but I think they play in another part of Bulgaria as well. These games will be taking place early to mid-March, I think it's in around the 20s of March and Ireland will be away in the first leg and then they are at home in the second so it'll be a tough ask but before I mention that, I'll say Ronan was in Wembley Stadium on Sunday, an overall very peaceful trip, obviously the result on the field wasn't as what we wanted but overall I'd say an enjoyable trip in a way. An enjoyable trip off the pitch, a large Irish support there, even though the full allocation tickets wasn't taken up, a lot of people travelled from Ireland, clearly as well a lot of UK based supporters, people from London and other parts of England but we had a relatively promising first half, we were keeping England at bay anyway during the first half but a collapse then, as you said, LinkedIn was sending off lean scales and then a collapse then in the opening minutes of the second half. Look at the quality, certainly compared to England and the top clubs, the top countries in Europe, certainly our quality is not there, we've had some heavy defeats against teams over the past few years like Portugal, Denmark and Germany. So we're starting, I don't want to be too negative, we're starting to slide down the European rankings and we have been for a while but we'll see, hopefully we can remain in the league lead, as you said yourself, the two-legged encounter with Bulgaria at the end of March. And definitely, with Heimer in charge, it's probably in a year or a few years next, it's probably, in a way you could say it's in a transition for the Irish team, there's a couple of the older lads who probably end up fading off and retiring, there is a couple of young lads, the 21s are doing reasonably well, there are even the likes of Nathan Collins, the captain of the Ireland team at the minute, he's still very young, look at the team, Festy is very young, Sammy is still, Evan Ferguson is still very young, it's a young enough team, so hopefully maybe in a few years' time it's the work that Heimer is doing that will benefit in the years to come. Indeed, indeed and you're looking at lads like Finnezaz there who have come on in recent months and started a few games there in the Nations League. Plenty of young players, we're definitely missing a bit of experience, you look at Sammy Smadik who seems to be a great arrival on the scene and certainly has plenty of energy, but I mean he's not a young man, in football terms he's not a young man, I was just looking at them here in front of me, the squad ages and Sammy is 29, so he's a few years left in him but he's not a very young player either. But as you said yourself, there's lads like Jacob Brine who's come in there, who's with Everton, as far as I know hasn't been featuring too regularly with Everton, but plenty of other defensive options, Nathan Collins, Dean Scales, another impressive performer, Daro Shea, so we're probably looking at the end, close to the end anyway, certainly for Seamus Coleman who's one of the older players, other lads like Matt Doherty, Robbie Brady probably coming towards the end of their career. We have the World Cup qualifiers next autumn for the World Cup in America, so Canada, United States, Mexico, which would be a great tournament to qualify for in 2026, but I still think the World Cup is possibly beyond, again I don't want to be too negative, but the World Cup is really at this stage for the elite European nations, it's going to take a major effort for us to get into the World Cup, so we could be looking again at the 2028 European Championships, so that's where we're at at the moment anyway Damien. And just to look at it on the U21 side of things, there's a couple of very good players, without to give a special mention to Galway's former Galway's Alex Murphy, he's been ever-present in the underage with Newcastle, he's probably captained a few of their sides, he's coming into the U21 side as well now, he's been captain of the U18 Ireland international side on numerous occasions, so the likes of him now, Armstrong, Andy Moore, they have a very good team coming up now, so hopefully they can move on into the first team there on the international team as well, so you'd be looking at the likes of four or five looking to get caught up to the senior squad. Hopefully, hopefully, hopefully, I mean we've always had a good, you know in recent years under Stephen Kenny himself, we've always had a good run of underage, we've always had plenty of prospective players at underage level, you know, so we'd be hoping that, you know, that this will continue over the next few years. Really, I suppose the issue probably is that we haven't got the same level of player at the top level at the clubs like, you know, Liverpool, Manchester United, Man City, Chelsea, you know, wherever else you're looking at there, Spurs, the top few clubs, we haven't had anyone who's been a regular at those clubs for a number of years now really, so we could probably do with some, you know, a few more players and we have players obviously at a Premier League level, but maybe not as many as one would expect or one would hope for anyway at the top club, so that's probably a challenge for us going forward. Yeah, looking at the top teams really, there's only the handful that are probably playing in the Premier League level, and I mentioned there to Ryan Manning, who came off the bench against Finland there, you know, he's been with Southampton, he's probably in just about getting a good game time there, he didn't know the team in Southampton, but I think he's, in the most recent that he has, he's got a few more minutes under his belt, so you'd be watching out for, like on a Galway point of view, you'd be looking like to them as Marseille try to get a bit more game time with Newcastle's first team and then obviously Ryan Manning to get to see these two Galway lads doing so well and they're still young enough to have a bright future in the game in England. Definitely, I mean Ryan hasn't really got, people would say that Ryan maybe hasn't got as many games as he should have had under Stephen Kenny, you know, so he's still currently a squad member with Heimer. Alex Murphy, good young, great young player, Newcastle United, you know, so he maybe though may need to go on loan or may need to feature elsewhere. He has signed a new long-term contract is my understanding with Newcastle and, but at the same time, he hasn't really featured for them regularly, so he may need to look at maybe a loan, maybe going on loan or looking at other options there, but at the same time, you know, maybe he is a prospect we're looking at in terms of a long-term shot at breaking through to the Newcastle United first team. Yeah, peace God and so obviously with Ireland playing Bulgaria, there's a couple more interesting games there in the Nations League draw, in the League A and B playoffs, there is Turkey play Hungary, Ukraine against Belgium and then Austria versus Serbia and then our neighbours Scotland have a tough opponent Ireland though in the last few weeks as they play Greece, so that'll be a tough one for the Scots, will they have a chance or you know, they have a better squad than Ireland and I'm sure they'll definitely give it a go to Greece. Definitely, they definitely at the moment have a better squad than Ireland as we discussed there, you know, they have more players who are playing at the, you know, even the likes of Aston Villa, they definitely have more players who are playing at the higher ranked Premier League clubs and Greece of course, you know, definitely you could kind of tell by, we were definitely well outplayed in both of the fixtures by Greece, so we're definitely behind, especially at home, we lost 2-0 at home and 2-0 away of course, but you know, we're definitely outplayed by Greece who will be definitely a tough challenge for the Scots. Interesting to see how that works, it's very important that we stay at League B level I think because in terms of future seedings for international tournaments, I don't think, I think as well if we were to fly down to League C in the Nations League, we might not find it as easy as we would think to get back up again. So you'd have a lot of, you know, I see there for example, Sweden were one of the teams in League C for this tournament, so you could easily end up being in a very tough draw, tough group. Now we were unlucky with having England of course, who were probably the stand outside there in League B, but at the same time, you know, as I said, we could always end up with a tough opponent at League C level as well, so we're better off clearly to beat Bulgaria over the two legs, second leg at home, which is an advantage and then look forward then to maybe a few friendlies during the summer and possibly a four-team qualifying group that seems to be the indication for the World Cup qualifiers in the autumn. That's exactly it and looking at the League B, C playoffs, you have also Kosovo play Iceland and Armenia play or Georgia and then Slovakia play Slovenia, so there's plenty of games to look forward to in March. But Rod, before I leave you, I've seen a couple of games coming up for the Ireland Women's International and lucky to have Mike Collins and Galway United's Julianne Russell named in the squad once again, along with Van der Vloes, Heather Payne, so I see a bit of a Galway contingent in that setup there as well. It'll be a tough game, a tough couple of games against Wales, I'm sure, but I'm sure they'll be definitely up for the battle. Definitely, we have two tough matches in Cardiff and in Dublin over the coming weeks, the European qualifiers. As you said yourself, great to see the two local representatives, in particular I suppose as a Galway United supporter, I would have great interest in Julianne Russell, who is brilliant to see, for getting a recall back into the international team and then as well as scoring, making a huge impact. So looking forward to those games, hopefully we may be able to get up to the game in the Aviva in early December to see how things go, to see Ireland take on Wales there, so we'll see how that goes. And then a special mention to Galway United's Kate Thompson also, by being nominated and being named on the 19th International Player of the Year as well, so it's great to see these young players coming through and the women's game in Galway seems to be definitely on the up, Phil Trill has the senior side challenging on all aspects, obviously retaining the All-Ireland Cup and then they've challenged for the league close up towards the end of the season, obviously a couple of results were a bit shy towards the end, but the results have been fairly fairly good over the last couple of years, so it's definitely another challenge ahead to challenge for the title next season maybe. Great, yes Damien, it has been a great season, we've signed a few players back, I see Ivan Costolo, Izzy Bilectic, Therese Knievy from Utrecht, that direction is back with us, Eve Dawson, there are four players that are back with United at the moment. Hopefully we can retain most of last year's squad, a very strong squad, I'm sure there'll be a few more signings announced and players retained over the coming weeks. As you said yourself, we've won another trophy this year, goal United have won the All-Ireland Cup, we've won it in 2023, 2024, some achievement to do the three in a row in 2025 and hopefully, we're just a small bit off the top of the table this year, some in different form during the season, combined with some great bursts of wins as well, so hopefully under Phil Trill United could win the league next year and myself and yourself will be looking forward to a European away trip with goal United in 2026. Please God, and one gentleman that has retained a lot of players is John Caulfield, who has refined the guts of 15 or 16 players for the upcoming season and it's been a very fast-moving to get these players signed up so quickly, they're really keeping the momentum going, they've got seats to take us out, they're doing discounts as well for renewals and co-op members and all that, it's looking good, they're probably five or six players short of a really strong squad for the upcoming season, which will probably kick off in mid-February. Definitely Damien, it's a very good return for goal United, back to the Premier Division finish fifth, which is above most people's expectations, some of the key players there are back again, some great signings there, people like Jimmy Trujano came in and made a huge impact, Jimmy's with us again for 2025, of course another local lad Greg Cunningham is back on board. Patrick Hickey, an outstanding prospect in the middle of the park, has back in with the club and a few more, for example Connor McCormack, Ed McCarthy, Stephen Walsh and the ever-reliable Brendan Clarke and goals, they're some of the players who have re-signed for the club. We're looking forward to a few new signings, we definitely well-remarked last year that a lot of the burden of goal scoring fell on Stephen Walsh, so we definitely need one or two strikers in there as well, but I'd be encouraging people, all your listeners, anyone in the Clifton area to get your goal United season tickets, great value, available from the club website, covers all the men's and women's matches, and certainly well worth it. For some of the matches last year they were sold out, so the capacity of the ground is around 4,300, so the season ticket certainly helps to secure admission to all matches, and we'll definitely be looking forward to the season ahead at Eamon V.C. Park. Please God, I'm sure there's plenty to look forward to in the off-season as well, like I know, and please God it'll be a very successful season on the pitch for the organisers, and we want to wish all the players involved in the international team, Julian Russell, Heather Payne, for the upcoming games against Wales. Ronan, it was an absolute pleasure having you on, and please God you'll have a peaceful weekend, and you can rest up after your trip to London. I'll definitely be having a rest this weekend, Damien, and you never know over the coming few weeks on my call out to Lowry's, well done to yourself and to Lowry's, I know you've been very successful, you've been award winners during the week, so congratulations to you and all your colleagues in Lowry's on your great success. Thank you so much, and we'll chat to you soon down the line. Okay Damien, talk to you soon. Now, that was Ronan Coleman, he is heavily involved with the Republic of Ireland Soccer Sporters Club, Western Branch, WISC for short, and the club are going from strength to strength, they run buses to all home games, and they organise tickets as well for away games and all that, so a big thank you to Ronan Coleman, and I'm sure, no doubt, he'll be making the trip to Bulgaria, so probably the kindest draw for the Republic of Ireland they could have got, so we'll move on. Close at home guys, there is plenty of action of the subject to weather conditions, so West Coast United have four home games this weekend, so the seniors are at home in the Sweft Cup, they are playing Merlin Woods at home, that is a 2pm kick-off on Saturday, and just before that seniors game, the Under-14 boys are at home to Nak Makara as well, so that's a double-header there on Saturday, and then on Sunday the girls have a double-header, the Under-14s are at home to Renmore, and then the Under-12 girls are at home to Ornmore, so all four home games, so it'll be great to get a lot of support out there this weekend for West Coast United teams, and the academy kicks off at 10 o'clock every Sunday morning, so obviously all these games are subject to the weather conditions, hopefully the weather can pick up and can improve over the next day or so, and obviously West Coast United are having their annual race night, and race sponsorships and prizes would be a help for the club as well, so please contact the Facebook page or obviously the Instagram page, or contact Joe or myself on 087 766 8028, and you can contact me on my number again, it's 087 766 8028, so anything to do with the race night or the race night is coming up on the 28th of December. In Paddycoins, Paddycoins have been an ever-present venue for the annual race night, and it's always been a great night with plenty of races on the night, first race kicks off at 8.30, and it's always a fun night, and it's a great fundraiser for West Coast United's underage teams as well, and then on the 12th of December in the Abingdon Hotel, West Coast United's 40th dinner dance, there are not too many tickets left, but there is, I think there's a handful of dinner tickets left, but there is also tickets on sale for the after dinner dance as well, so it's promised to be a great night with the legend, that is Paki Banner, in attendance that night, so it's Thursday the 12th of December in the Abingdon Hotel, so West Coast United's 40th anniversary dinner dance, so it'll be a great night with plenty of stories from down through the years, as you know there's so many games, and Cubs won throughout the year with West Coast, so it'll be plenty of stories in total on the night, and a chance to meet that legend Paki Banner, so that is it from the local scene on the soccer scene, we're going to play a little song, with the weather being so bad, slightly improving thankfully in the last few days, but a song that's been sung in Haringham Park over the PA system for many years, and they're in a goal bench, it is the stunning Bruin of the Storm. Honey, if the truth hurts, don't look at my doorway, it's easy to pretend that life is a rosy bouquet, I don't need a platter, I'll take it straight from the shelf, if you give it to me raw, I'll take it home, cook it myself, Bruin of the Storm, Bruin of the Storm, Bruin of the Storm, Bruin of the Storm, can't afford to lose touch, can't afford to lose control, the doors are open wide, the wind blows a bitter cold, man holds a mystery, someone else holds the key, all with the shame, they say the answer doesn't have to be, Bruin of the Storm, Bruin of the Storm, Bruin of the Storm, Bruin of the Storm, Bruin of the Storm, Bruin of the Storm, Bruin of the Storm, Bruin of the Storm, Bruin of the Storm, Bruin of the Storm, Bruin of the Storm, Bruin of the Storm, fire in your eyes, in your head, fire in your, in your head, but I can't have fire, cause I love you too much, erase it all, the messages in your soul, as a thousand thoughts a second now explode, Bruin of the Storm, Bruin of the Storm, Bruin of the Storm, Bruin of the Storm, Bruin of the Storm, Bruin of the Storm, Bruin of the Storm, Bruin of the Storm, Bruin of the Storm, Bruin of the Storm, but I can't have fire, cause I love you too much, Bruin of the Storm, Bruin of the Storm, Bruin of the Storm, Bruin of the Storm, Bruin of the Storm, Bruin of the Storm, Bruin of the Storm, Bruin of the Storm, Bruin of the Storm, Bruin of the Storm, Bruin of the Storm, Bruin of the Storm, Bruin of the Storm, Bruin of the Storm, Bruin of the Storm, Bruin of the Storm, Bruin of the Storm, Bruin of the Storm, Bruin of the Storm, Bruin of the Storm, Bruin of the Storm, Bruin of the Storm, Job Spot, on Connemara Community Radio. So moving on guys, closer to home. Last weekend, or last Friday I would say, the Darts Federation here in Connemara have set up their league as well and a big shout out to James Joyce, Dan O'Malley, Paul Gannon, I'm sure I'm missing one or two more, but a big shout out to them all. It's been a great success on the first night and I'm sure they're probably torn a few darts as we speak now as they are their second outing this weekend. They are in numerous locations around Connemara. I think Levy's is one and O'Malley's here in Letterfrack is another and it's great to see. It's up and about and I think there's over 50 players signed up for the club as well, so it's a great start to the Darts Federation as well. Earlier on, on Monday evening, Paul Gannon went through all the results for the Darts and we just want to run through all the results again to keep everyone up to date, but it's been a great success and it's going to be a thing.
