Right, on our Eco Slot this evening, we're going to talk a little bit about climate change. And we have a press release in which says, Marine Science Reveals Climate Change Lessons Recorded by Tiny Polar Organisms. And to tell us more about this, I'm delighted to welcome Dr Audrey Morley, lecturer in Geography at the University of Galway. Audrey, you're very welcome to see on Canamara Community Radio. Thank you so much for having me today. No problem at all. Just tell me a little bit about this study then, how did this come about that you discovered these particular changes and what was recorded? Yeah, yeah, okay. So I study small, tiny organisms called Foraminifera. And they're small like a grain of sand. And actually the sand on Dogs Beach is made of Foraminifera. So all the sand that you can see is made up of these tiny little organisms, which is kind of cool. So the next time you guys go to the beach there, have a closer look to the sand because it's all made out of these Foraminifera. And these Foraminifera are marine plankton. And they, during their lifetimes, build a tiny shell out of the elements and isotopes that are available in the seawater. And when they die, they sink to the ocean floor and are deposited in marine or climate archives. So when I go and take a sediment core and study these organisms that are now fossilized, they represent past climates that I can then study. Well, that's very interesting. So the creatures themselves, do they kind of live all over the world? Or are they focused in particular areas? Or can you do different studies in different places to see what the changes are? Yeah, exactly. They live all over the place. They live in the Arctic, all the way to the tropics, and in both hemispheres. They live in the surface ocean or in the bottom water. So depending on which species you study, you can reconstruct the climate of the past in the Arctic or in the tropics or at the bottom of the ocean. And that is really important because all these different places in the world need to be studied in how they respond to climate change if we want to have a better understanding of how climate is changing to changing carbon dioxide concentration. Yeah. I know when people are doing surveys in things like ice and they're taking up chunks of ice from very deep down and they're finding all these little bubbles and little pieces like that. Is that similar to what you're doing? You're doing core sampling and then... Yeah, yeah, exactly. So the foraminifera are kind of the bubbles that you find in ice cores and that can tell us about the past atmosphere of Earth's climate history. And foraminifera tell us about the past ocean and Earth's climate history. So together it's a really powerful tool to then understand how the ocean and the atmosphere responded to past changes in climate. So the studies that you've been carrying on, that you have the key information on here, how do you actually then discover these guys? What do you have to do to actually find out what story they're telling? Yeah, exactly. So I went out on the Celtic Explorer, which is one of Ireland's research vessels and went all the way up into the Nordic seas, really, really cold waters, and we captured the foraminifera that lived there alive because we were interested to find out how the signal of climate change is recorded in these shells and to then better understand the climate archives. Okay. So you've captured the live ones to study, to see if they've been ignited against the ones that are in deeper cores. Is that what you're doing? Exactly, exactly. So in order to understand the chemistry that is recorded in the archive, we first need to understand what the signal of climate, how it is recorded in the chemistry of the living foraminifera because we collected the water and the elements and the isotopes of the water they lived in at the same time as the living foraminifera so we can pair the information of climate with the chemistry that is recorded in the shell. And once we understand that relationship, we can apply it to the past. Okay. It's very exciting, I'm sure, to be doing this kind of work, but what has it been telling us or what have you discovered so far? So the study that I just got published with our co-authors is that that signal that we recorded in the chemistry of these tiny shells has been misunderstood previously and now I was able to refine what the signal means in terms of climate change and so I was able to show that our climate has changed or responded much more sensitive to changes in climate forcing. So for example, during the past ice age when it was really, really cold, the ocean was much colder at mid-latitude, so that's where the Latitude Island is, was much colder than we thought previously. And that is really important because we need to, our models use these past changes in climate to estimate what future climate change will look like. So if we underestimate climate change in the past, that means our models won't do it right for the future. Okay, wow. So you're really correcting maybe a lot of history, how people would have seen things in the past. But for these creatures, do changes in climate change what they look like or how they react? Can you tell from what they look like now from what they used to look like? So it's the chemistry that is recorded in the shell that changes. So those creatures, when they live, they build a shell out of the seawater they live in. So during past colder times, for example, they will record those signals of climate in the chemistry as they build their shell out of the calcium and the magnesium that is available in the seawater. And that changes with climate. So that is why we can infer past changes in climate by just looking at the chemistry of the shell. Okay. So the pieces, the work that you've been doing, how has this come down with other scientists and other researchers? Has it been interesting or has there been an interesting reaction to it? So far I haven't had any reaction to it, but it's been highlighted by the editors and people are really excited about it because it really transforms our understanding about how our climate will respond to changes in carbon dioxide concentrations or changes in climate in general. So I am expecting that there will be a lot of interest in this study and that the findings will be taken on by climate models that will then look into the future and see how this will impact our future climate prediction. Okay. Now I know that you've been working on this now for a little while. Is this something that will be kind of featuring as part of the teaching in the college, not just we say in Galway, but in some colleges? Will people be taking this on board as a new way of looking now as to how they would need to study this format? Absolutely. I think this is a really important finding, and not only in Ireland but worldwide. I think in the community people will take this on because it is important. If we underestimate or if we were wrong in the past, if we underestimate the sensitivity of climate change or the degree of climate change to climate forecasting, then that has severe repercussions in all kinds of domains. Again, I hope that people will take it on and take it into consideration when future predictions are being made. Okay. Well, it's absolutely wonderful talking to you. Winter is coming soon. Winter is coming soon. The ideas I suppose behind Tiny Towns has changed a lot. It's a lot more now to do with environmental issues and kind of wild areas compared to when it used to be just kind of pretty flowers and pretty things. It has changed a good bit over the years. It has totally changed. Now it's more about looking after the wildlife and biodiversity issues. A great example is along the Valley of the Canary Roads where the council leave parts of the grass unmowed. That is exactly what they're looking for. Just wild areas. It's not always what some people think is beautiful but it's so important. From an environmental point of view, if you're using lawnmowers or these robotic lawnmowers that will go out of light and the amount of destruction that's caused and we don't see it but you know the amount of light that's in the ground that is just blown away. It's very sad. Yeah, absolutely. And the other thing which I suppose has improved a lot as well is the whole thing to do with the built landscape because that's another aspect of the tiny towns that you may not think about but they're looking at the buildings and how they're presented and Tifton generally I would imagine would be quite good in that way as well. Yeah, yes we have done quite well. We've gone up two points there. One place they commented particularly on was the old Central Hotel and the way that facade has been kept. So many buildings here in the town have done that and I have to offer my congratulations to business owners. They do a terrific job looking after their premises. They really do. And of course I know that the big thing I suppose for a lot of these places is to do with the flowers and the flower boxes and the baskets and all that. There's a great effort done by the community but also the businesses in that as well. That is right. And I have to say that I don't think we'd be doing as well as we are without the input of the businesses because they really do help us and they keep their areas looking really well and it means that the few people, and I have to emphasise you, people that are doing the main work, it gives them time to go out and do what they have to do rather than concentrating on the town. Yeah, absolutely. Now I suppose education is an important aspect because I don't just mean the schools type of thing but I'm just thinking about places, trying to get people to be aware of things like signage and to be aware of how to present things as well. Is there enough education going to the local population to say this is what we really need to do to try and up the marks even more? That's, I've often wondered about Brendan. I'm not sure and I'm not even sure how we can accomplish this. Now of course we have our Facebook page and we try and get out as much information as we can but I still think that, from a personal point of view, I still think that people could be, get more involved, help us out. Like, you know, I'm looking at the comments on Facebook and everybody loves what we do and it's great but if we could just get out, mind your patch, just yours, no one else's. You know, just look after what's in front of your house. I think it would make a difference, wouldn't it? Yeah, I think it probably would if people made that effort, I suppose is right. Now the committee and the people that are working there, I mean, you say it's a small group of people but very dedicated and I'll have to take my hat off to them to see that they're working morning through the night, right through the year. They're a brilliant bunch, they really are. Like, I know I'm chairperson but I do nothing. You keep them under control, Nuala, that's your job. Well, yeah, well, I don't know, I try. But, yeah, they are, they're a wonderful, wonderful, dedicated bunch of people and, you know, I'd love to get the message out that we really need people to help us. You know, that's the big thing. Like, it's all very well to say you're doing great and year on year we always go up a couple of points, which is wonderful. But I think we probably could do more if we had more support. Yeah, absolutely. And, of course, I suppose another aspect of which has always been the big problem is that you are also having to deal with, you know, the NRA, the County Council and other people who are not interested or anything else to get things like that done. So, I suppose working with everybody is what's really needed. Yeah, that's right. Now, we are extremely lucky in that, you know, with the Council and they are so lucky, they really are. But, yeah, like, now I'll give you an example. A recycling sign was missing on the Galway Road. It's up there now. But it took me two years, if not more, three years maybe, to get that fixed. And that's what we're dealing with. And when we say, I will do it, no, you can't, it's up to, you know. And it's quite disheartening, you know, when you see something that needs to be done and you can't do it because other people have to do it. Yeah, well, that's always the problem. And just looking through the results or the pieces as well, the community planning and involvement. Last year, 56 and this year, 57. Streetscape and public spaces, last year 50, this year 52. Green spaces and landscaping, 44 last year and 46, I think, this year. Nature and biodiversity in your area, 45 and 46 this year. Tidiness and litter control, 61 and 62 this year. Residential streets and housing areas, 31 up to 33. Approach roads, streets and lanes, 29 up to 30. And that's how the marks went up a little bit. But as Nuala was saying there, there's a lot of work still to be done, obviously, because the overall figure that you should be getting is 550 and Clifton is 356. So it's a fair bit away from getting the tidiest in Ireland or winning any big awards. And that's not a criticism of the TidyTowns because they're doing an amazing job there. But it is a thing that we all need to look at. And as we were saying there about things like the buildings themselves, they all look extremely well. But there's still a lot of work to be done. And as I say, people should really be thinking about that as well. So plenty of work to be done. But well done to the Clifton TidyTowns for all the work that they do throughout the year. And I keep saying it's not just for the visitors. People criticize the visitors. It's for ourselves, people that live in Clifton and come into Clifton regularly, that it's great to see the town looking well and fair play to them. Now we're going to take another piece of music and after that we'll be speaking with Roland O'Neill. Roland, of course, a well-known Shadows dancer. And he won at the Aroxas a senior Shadows dancing competition. We'll be playing a piece of that one shortly. And then later on in our art slot, Tony Varley, a social science research centre at the University of Galway, a co-author of a new book called Inside Rural Ireland, which sounds quite interesting. We'll have to see exactly what all that one is about. And then classical music as well. And I'm going to play this next track for Niall and Tony and Brian and Valerie there in Dublin, who are cousins, of course, who listen to the programme on a very regular basis. Of course we had great news last week about Michael Gannon's programme from Bureaucrats and talking about the various pieces there, but of course it's not the only winners from the Connemara area and I'm delighted to welcome Roland O'Neill to our programme to talk to us about his winning in the Rink Shadows and Chin. Roland, you're very welcome to us here on Connemara Community Radio. Thank you very much. It's great having you here and congratulations. Tell me a little bit about the competition exactly that you were involved in and how it went. I suppose the competition that I was on myself was the senior, the Damsel in Disguise, the Senior Competition and I suppose the prelims are on the Friday so we danced, there was 43 in my competition on the Friday and then out of that the judges chose 20 of us to go through for the pre-competition on the Saturday and thankfully I got the luck of the draw with me and I won the competition. Wow. Are there people from all over Ireland taking part in this? It's not confined to any particular area, is it? Oh God no, you've danced this from I'd say, I won't say every county in Ireland but the majority of the counties in Ireland have danced it and said there could be quite a few from every county in it. Okay. And of course the shadows, I mean people who know you will have seen you dancing many, many times on various stages and different places. How did you get into shadows? Where did that come from? I suppose going back a few years now actually because I've been dancing for 13 or 14 years at this stage but I first started dancing when I was about six and there was just a programme there on television at the time Ireland's Got Talent and there was a family on it, music and dance and then I just said that I had an interest in that so then I took up shadows dance when I was about six or seven and I just kind of went from there really. Wow. And the dancing, I mean is it something that you have to be taught or is it something that you have naturally within you or how do you feel, you know, that people manage to kind of, I suppose, you know, do that aspect of it? I suppose obviously for the dancing you have to have kind of a basic understanding of music. When you're starting off I suppose it is always a good thing to maybe get a few lessons and get a bit of guidance somewhere along the line but I suppose at the stage where I am now in the teen years you're just kind of looking at different dancers and you're just kind of picking up steps as you go along but I suppose the most important thing is when you're dancing it's just to have your own style that's unique to yourself. And I suppose that's the big thing, I know that there's a lot of people down in Kilkenny and all that area, I mean it's a wonderful area for dancing and there's some fantastic dancers, I mean do you find that you kind of hold in on one or two people or are you more open to look at people that may not be as traditional as others and see what they're up to as well? Well the most important thing is to try and keep with the tradition that we have here in Connemara with Shanna Sampson. Now I'm not saying I'd be holding in on anyone in particular but you'd kind of look at different dancers and you might like a step or two that a certain dancer do, you might like someone else's steps. You just kind of look at steps and you'd make them your own and kind of turn it into that way but the most important thing would be to try and keep the tradition here that we have in Connemara alive. Well I know you've been doing that for quite a while, so as you said you kind of picked it up that way but did people, did you take lessons or did you have people give you ideas along the way as well? How did that come about or how did that happen? I would have had lessons in the earlier days, like I would have had a few teachers in the earlier days of it. I started off with Emma O'Sullivan there and then I took lessons from Gareth Devan from down there and just kind of did that for a few years and then after that I just kind of tried to branch on and make my own style out of it. Well I know you've got a very special style, I mean as I said people who have seen you dancing would know that. Do you feel that you'd like to pass that on to other people? Are you interested in teaching or would that be something that you'd like to try and do as well? At the minute I suppose there's a lot going on, it's still rather fresh, it hasn't really sunk in yet but somewhere down the line I would like to try and pass on, I won't say what I have, but try and pass on some kind of tradition on to the younger generation or to anyone that would want to pick it up. It's something that's there to enjoy. Yeah, absolutely. Now I know that as I say here at Huston you dance a lot with Marie Welsh and all the group there but do you kind of dance in different places around the county and around other areas yourself or do you kind of stick with one kind of group? No, it'll be fairly widespread now between all the competitions and displays I've done over the last couple of years. There's very few counties in Ireland that I haven't ventured to but I suppose you kind of have to venture out just to get a feel for all the different competitions and opportunities that are out there. Yeah, well it's fantastic talking to you and as I say the best to look to you and to keep going with this because it's really great and of course it encourages other people and winning the cup will really help as well. But Roland, it's great talking to you, go raibh míle maith agat agus a thoir nácht agus baibh míle cointríos. Slán. Slán maith agat. Slán Roland, slán. Now, Roland O'Neill there talking to us about his big win in the arts and saying fair play to him and certainly if you have been watching or listening to events taking place around the Calamari area over the last few years you'll have seen Roland at various events and it's always great to see a very, very natural way of dancing but well done to him there. Yes indeed, as I say Roland, we recorded that one earlier because he was busy this evening so he would not have been available but as I say, best of luck to him. I know that he has been encouraged all along through the Colsas group here in Clifton and throughout all of the area and I'm sure he has danced in just about every part of Calamari and it is really important that people make the effort to support the young people when they're starting off and as I said, I'm not quite sure what age Roland is but I remember when he was only a very small, very young guy dancing and just watching how he's developed over the time and of course he's very involved in ponies and all sorts of other things there as well and it's lovely to see that as I say, to have that tradition continuing on and of course all of the wonderful dancers around Calamari as I say, they all deserve full praise from us for keeping this tradition alive. We have wonderful set dancers, step dancers and quite a lot of shadows and I suppose it's hard to know how you feel about any one aspect of it but I particularly love the shadows dancing, I think it works extremely well and it's a lovely freestyle from them there. Now, we'll be going over very shortly to the break at the top of the hour and after that we'll have Tony Varley who's the Social Science Research Centre at the University of Galway co-author of this book which sounds interesting, Power and Change Since Independence called Inside Rural Ireland and we'll get more information about that one along the way, then classical music following on from that as well so plenty to keep us going between now and the end of the programme. I suppose for people just looking around, the weather at the moment has been particularly mild it hasn't been as bad as we could have been expecting and it's very interesting, when we were talking last evening at the Calamari Garden Club meeting the amount of flowers that people were saying are still flowering in their garden it's been quite unusual because the weather has been pretty miserable throughout the summer time but it has really improved since the autumn and things flowering which were very out of season and as I say, God knows what that's going to do to next year's plants when they have started so much at this stage but it's always something that we should be watching out for and as I say, kind of keeping an eye on how these things do change because I think we've all noticed a big change in the climate and the conditions of plants starting much earlier than usual and I've certainly seen that the last while that everything is between six weeks and two months ahead of themselves and in fact, we were talking about that last night, one of the plants was Mahonia, the yellow and of course that's normally Christmas time or early January and it's flowering absolutely fantastic at the moment so it's kind of a bit weird to see all of that but there's very little we can do about it but we do probably have to start thinking about the future and I know a lot of people are very interested in that in other parts of the world to see how they can move pieces and I was looking at a piece on the computer the other evening about plants that are being transplanted from Australia and from the United States because of the climate changes that they're actually trying to see when they grow in places that they normally would not be growing but with the changing seasons and the changing temperatures etc that they will need to be rescued as such so maybe we should start thinking a little bit about the future as well and trying to see what we can plant which might just be slightly a little bit more further south than what we would normally be looking at but as I say, we don't know what's going to happen along there either so we'll have to watch that particular one
