Welcome to the great outdoors here on Canterbury Community Radio with 87.8 and 106.1 FM. I suppose just very quickly before we go into this other aspect. This year the Bloom Festival was a terrific success I think. You were very happy with us were you? Yeah we were indeed. We had over 100,000 visitors over five days. Lots of celebrations in horticulture, food and drinks. So yeah it was wonderful and the weather was kind as well which is always a bonus. That's very good. Now as of course people are getting so much more interested in gardening and garden design and all of that. I suppose the idea is that you really need to keep moving it forward. And this cultivating talent programme works on that. Tell me a bit about the background to this one. Yeah it's something we started back in 2000 for Bloom 2003. So we started this time of year in 2002. And the idea was to kind of cultivate a stream of designers coming through to Bloom. Because sometimes it can be a barrier in terms of having a sponsor or someone to create a garden for. So this allows a designer to showcase at Bloom without having to have a sponsor in place. So we obviously provide the funding through Westland Horticulture who now sponsors this programme. And also there's mentoring from an experienced Bloom show garden designer. So again it's just giving people a chance to get on that ladder and showcase their talent at Bloom. And are these, not necessarily young people, but are they kind of amateurs or are they people who are in the position, the job itself in such horticulture? Yeah it's the latter. It is kind of fresh faces. They don't have to be young as such. They could be graduates or not having had a garden at Bloom previously. We are looking through the industry. So ideally garden designers or landscape architects or horticulturists who are in the industry and kind of want to. So it is in that kind of professional spectrum I guess. We have other categories of postcard gardens which I know you guys are really big fans of as well. That's in that our amateur kind of category but this is kind of professional. So if anyone knows a neighbour or a niece or nephew or somebody who might be working in that spectrum of kind of garden design or landscape design and wants to kind of get involved at Bloom, this is an ideal programme for them. So how do they go about doing that? I mean I just heard that applications will be up in November but how do people actually apply? Yeah so if you go on to the Board via Bloom website there is a section called participate. On there you'll find the cultivating talent. A little brochure explaining the process and what's involved. And initially it's kind of having your design idea, whatever it might be for a small size garden. And then a little written brief so what it's about and a little bit about yourself as well. And get that in to us by the 26th of November and then we'll be reviewing all of the submissions shortly after that and we'll be back in touch at the very latest during the new year. But ideally we'll be back in touch before Christmas because sometimes you might need extra information from people so we'll shortlist it. But the ambition is to know as soon as possible so someone will be notified early in the new year if they're going forward and give them time to plan that garden for next June back all the weekend. And it is out of the group that can be just one person that's picked each year? Yeah that's right. Now there was a bit of an exception that is the kind of thumb rule but last year we had a very close tie in first place twice. So we went out for extra information from two designers and they came back and when they were scored they scored the same mark. So we made it work last year to have two but the ambition is this year to revert back to having one. So there will be one designer this year. But it's always good to reach out and even if somebody wants to get involved in Bloom generally as a designer to reach out because there's often opportunities that we might have that we can kind of do a bit of matchmaking to hook them up with sponsors and stuff like that as well. But this is kind of an open book in terms of design. Something that might be in your head already and you want to kind of get it done and you don't have any kind of restraints. It's kind of a free brief in that sense. I mean we do ask for people to consider the environment obviously and the pollinators and biodiversity when they're considering any scheme. But other than that it's kind of wide open. Because I suppose there's a lot of change in how people do their gardening as you say there with wildlife and nature now being very much part of what it used to be. In the old days people would have been using chemicals everywhere to kill everything that was possible. So I presume you're looking for fresh ideas as well from people as to how they can move forward with what their plan is. Yeah. Kind of in line with current best practice and thinking and giving visitors kind of some ideas when they come to Bloom. Oh to inspire people and maybe there's a different way. You can be using even ordinary materials but maybe using them a little bit different. Oh I didn't think you're doing it that way. And our visitors love that. They love when they come to Bloom and they're inspired. And sometimes it can be oh that's just such a material. That's a lovely way of using it you know. And so I think that's what it should be about. That kind of you know they're cultivating their talent but they're also giving visitors and they're inspiring people to garden and just giving them fresh ideas to take home with them as well. Because I mean that's the great thing about Bloom is that when you go there you start getting ideas for your own garden. I mean not everybody obviously can do everything that they see but you can certainly adapt things to your own situation. So I suppose it really is important that people look at the future and what might be happening out there. Yeah that's exactly it. And you know who better to bring it through than kind of you know new to the industry with you know fresh ideas. And this is that opportunity. You know even a lot of the designers will say they like doing show gardens at Bloom because it allows them to test some ideas as well where they don't have the same restraint that you might have on a kind of a real project. It gives you that kind of a bit more blue sky thinking sometimes. Okay. Well look it's a fantastic opportunity for people who would be in the industry and just starting off. Just give us again the dates and the contact. Yeah. So if they go to www.boardbadbloom.com forward slash participate they'll find all the information on cultivating talent there. And the deadline for applications is Tuesday November 26. So it's a good few weeks yet to get that in. Close to a month so people have time to think about it and things like that. Well Kerry this was great talking to you and as I say let us know how it's going. And if you have anybody from Connemara or from the West here we'd be delighted to help and work with them and talk to them about us. But it's been great talking to you and thanks a million for being with us. Thanks so much for having me on Brendan. No problem Kerry. Bye bye bye. Bye bye for now. That's Kerry Gardner there who's show garden manager with Board B at Bloom. And if you are a designer or somebody who has an interest in all this kind of stuff or you know somebody who'd be interested you have up to November 26 to get involved. So www.boardbadbloom.com forward slash participate and then follow the links from there. We're going to take a little piece of music and then we will be speaking with Fiona Hopkins hopefully. So we're going to listen to a little track here and I can't even remember what we're going to do at this stage. But let's have a listen. Anyway we'll have some fiddles. Some lovely fiddle music and this is Maggie Pickie. Fiddle music. Fiddle music. Fiddle music. Fiddle music. Fiddle music. Fiddle music. Fiddle music. Fiddle music. Fiddle music. Fiddle music. Right, that was Graeme there talking about the Canamar Astronomy Club's meeting on Tuesday next at 7.30 in the Forum offices there behind the Aero Club building there. As I say, interesting, hopefully there. Now, I'm delighted to welcome Fiona Hopkins to the programme to talk to us a little bit about the Mayo Dark Skies Festival which takes place tomorrow evening for 2nd and 3rd. Fiona, you're welcome to see us on Canamara Community Radio. Thanks a million, Brendan. Lovely to chat with you. Great to have a chat with you. And of course, the Mayo Dark Skies Festival has been on the go for a while now and it's very successful. But tell me a little bit about this year's festival and what's the plan? Oh, such an eclectic mix of events, Brendan, I have to say. I wouldn't know where to start but I'll certainly start with some of the highlights such as we have the cousin of explorer and adventurer Ernest Shackleton, that's Jonathan Shackleton who will be coming to Ballycroy in County Mayo to talk about the legacy of his cousin Ernest and his adventures in Antarctica. So that is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see a member of the Shackleton family and their legacy. We have just so many other events, of course. We have planetarium shows going about six times a day. Throughout the day, free shows that people can just turn up to, come along to the planetarium and get a guided show, a guided tour of the night sky. We have the meteorologist Joanna Donnelly from RT and MetErin coming to talk about a kind of a tour of the sea area forecast from Mallinhead to Misenhead and all her experiences of I think something like 30 years in MetErin. So, you know, it's such a huge variety of types of events and things that would suit everyone. Yeah. Now, what's interesting, of course, is that there is so many things and a lot of work, of course, for kids as well, which is great because, you know, they're the future as well as everything else. But I mean, for them to get involved, they really love these kind of things, especially the planetarium type of ideas. So, I mean, you focus a fair bit on the kids, do you? A lot. A lot. I mean, we have a kind of policy, Brenda, that says kids go free to everything. So if a family, if a mom or a dad or a family turns up with three children under the age of 16, we never, ever charge for the children to go into those talks. And exactly as you say, they are the future. In fact, you know, we work very closely with Newport Astronomy Club here in Newport, in County Mayo, to encourage the kind of the beginners who are just looking up at the stars and saying, what's that all about and how do I find out more about it? And each year we try to give a talk or an event that really encourages people to start on that journey. And this year we have a workshop on Stellarium. You're probably familiar with it yourself, Brendan. It's one of these free programs that you can download that helps you plan your viewing of the night sky. You put in the date and the time and where you are in the world and it will tell you when you look out and go out into your garden and look up at the night sky, what you can expect to see. And we have Derek from Newport Astronomy Club who is going to talk people through that and help them to start using it. So again, back to your point of just getting people out there, looking up at the sky and appreciating what's there and also starting to learn a little bit about it. Yeah, absolutely. It's really important for people to make a start. And of course, as I say, we have wonderful skies here in the West of Ireland. And we have, of course, the added great thing there of having the Dark Skies Park as well. So just I suppose, because unfortunately we're running out of time, but for people who are interested in finding out more about it, where do they get the information? Look, the easiest way to do it is just to go to our website. That's www.mayodarkskysfestival.ie. And there's so much more that we haven't even covered. But they'll see all the information, the full program. And they're still able to buy tickets. And even if you just turn up on the day, you can just turn up for individual talks. There's just so much going on. And you'll be more than welcome. OK. Well, it's unfortunate to say we are going to run out of time. But it's been great talking to you. And as I say, we'll highlight that again in the program for all the details. But thank you so much for being with us. Thanks, Brendan. And hello to all our friends in Clifton, in Cullamara, I should say. Cullamara Astronomy Club. And, you know, we wish you all the best. We just had Graeme in, of course, talking about what he's doing next Tuesday with them. Oh, fantastic. Fantastic. Oh, you have a great club there. It's all gold. You have a great club there in Cullamara. So, well done. Yeah. Well, thanks a million, Fiona. We'll talk to you again. All the best. Bye. Bye-bye. See you. Bye. See you now. Bye. Bye. Bye. Bye. Bye.
