To tell us more about it, I'm delighted to welcome Niall McCabe to the program. Niall, you're welcome to us here on Connemara Community Radio. Thank you very much for having me. It's a pleasure to be here. Great to get a chance to talk to you. Now, you focus the guitar on this particular performance. Have you worked with Mike and with Nolik before? No, no, never. We actually had never met. Well, I had never met them until we got together to rehearse the very first day there a few months ago, which was a hair-raising for me because obviously, you know, everyone knows them as giants of the shred and folk world. So, yeah, it was a bit nerve-wracking, but it's so nice. It's very exciting to be playing with people like that, you know. And people, you know, like that, I suppose, have they been an influence to you or where did your music kind of start with? Where did you get your interest and then, I suppose, influences? Well, I guess, I mean, I wouldn't have been, I mean, no more, well, I suppose, I mean, I know them from their work with Patrick McKinn and with Donald Lunny and, you know, Mike's work on Transatlantic. But my own, my own personal kind of music kind of started at home with the local musicians on Clare Island. You know, because we own the family pub. We own the local pub. And I was allowed to play and sit around and listen to the music that was going on there. So, that's really where it kind of probably all started for me. Yeah. But your music is, and I'm not saying this with modern music or older fashion music, but you are writing your own as well, are you, and performing kind of, let's just say, more modern pieces? Yeah, I mean, it's definitely folk inspired and it's definitely inspired by the music that I would have gone up listening to. But, yeah, I mean, it's modern in the sense that it was written very recently. But, yeah, I wouldn't say it's modern for younger listeners if I think it's all old stuff. Well, I don't know about that. I mean, I've heard you, your performances out on Clare Island a few times and I know that you are an incredible performer. It's going to be a lovely mix and I think that's what I like about the Music Network when they bring people together like this, that it's kind of a little bit of a blending of different styles and different things and it's always kind of interesting to see what comes out of it. Yeah, I think they do a really exceptional job with that and I thought that before, but now that, you know, being in it and kind of just seeing how we're kind of sparking off each other musically, I do sometimes stop and think, geez, they did a really good job of putting us together. It really works. So, you know, hats off to Deirdre and the gang. I mean, I wouldn't have thought of it myself, but they know how to curate this stuff. And I know that you have a piece that will be a piece that you wrote especially for this particular tour and I think there's another first time as well. So, is that kind of interesting to be kind of performing your own music with people like this as well? Yeah, well, I'm playing all my own songs for this anyway, so we're kind of working on, you know, the arrangements for that, which is very exciting. But, you know, to write something then with that within in mind is also, it's a new challenge and very rewarding. And they're working on, we're actually working, we were just taking a break from rehearsing. We're working on a piece of Mike's, which is a brand new piece as well. And, yeah, it's super exciting to try new stuff and to do it together. And, yeah, I guess that's more of it, you know, being flown together in a way that you never would naturally, I suppose. Yeah, it's very exciting. Yeah, and I know that normally with Music Network there's tours involved. Are you on tour or is it just a once off here? No, no, we're on tour. This is part of a nationwide tour and we'll also be going to London for one night. So, we're in Clifton on the 27th. That's at 4pm, if I can think of it. And, yeah, we're in Dunleary and we're in Bray and Tinnahealy and Cork and Triscol and all over the country. I think 11 days in total. So, yeah, by the time we get to Clifton, that will be quick and easy. Yeah, yeah. And, of course, I suppose it's wonderful to be getting the chance to go over to London and perform in a different location because, I mean, I don't know how popular, how well known you'd be known in London. So, I suppose for a lot of people this might be the first chance to hear all of you performing. Sure, sure. But I think, I mean, we were just talking about that, I think that they're selling pretty well. I think the interest is definitely there for us. So, I'm confident that there'll be a lot of people hopefully turning out. I mean, for Mike and Lullag alone, like, you know, you'd be worth the trip. Well, I have to say, you're not, you don't have to hide behind the door yourself because I mean, I know that you and your, you have a wonderful group there. I've heard you perform. As I say, you're really very, very special in that way. And it's really lovely, as I say, for people of various, you know, generations and different types of musics coming together. And that's what I love about Music Network. They put together quite interesting combinations and then people get a chance to play separately, together, and how it all works. Yeah, I think it benefits everyone involved because not only do you get the chance to kind of rub shoulders with new people, but then, like, the exposure you get for your own, like, there'll be a moment or, you know, a few moments, I guess, every night where each one gets to kind of shine a light on what they do as well. So, I mean, that's a great opportunity as well, you know, to a packed house. Yeah, it's definitely rewarding in that way. Well, look, it's really great talking to you, as I say, and the very best to look to everybody on the tour. I'm looking forward to it myself. I know that there'll be a lot of people there, and as I say, we have a good few people, well, not a good few, a few people from, with connections to Clare Island, who I'm sure will be turning up, your big fans will be there. And on that, of course, we have so much talent coming to Clifton over the next, like, more than a week now, and I've mentioned quite a few of them, and of course, the, as I said, the Burma, who we played earlier there, they will be performing on September the 20th, that's tomorrow evening, 9pm at the Station House Theatre. And I think it's one for anybody, there are very talented young musicians, but it should be a particularly good one for, I think, younger people, possibly, to go out and support that one as well. And also a group that will be performing on tomorrow, on the 20th, are the Luminosa String Orchestra from Galway, and they will be performing in St Joseph's Church on tomorrow, September the 20th, at 7pm. And again, I would recommend that people go and get themselves tickets for all of these things, because things do set up quite quickly. And very shortly, I'll be speaking with Chantal about two shows that are coming up for the Arts Festival with Fidget Feet, and they will be on the 21st and the 22nd, but as I said, I'll keep that for Chantal, we will talk to her after a while about that. Another one to look forward to is Night Visiting, Sounds and Stories from the Heart, and this is a really lovely piece, and I played a piece from Lisa before about this, and that's Lisa Lamb. Really lovely voice and lovely idea of the, you know, going to the houses and singing and telling stories and all that, so it's a really, really interesting piece, and that is on Station House Theatre on September the 23rd. A very interesting one coming up on September the 25th will be Bill O'Leary, and you may remember a couple of months ago now, I was speaking with Jackie Lydon when she was here with her group, and Bill of course, as he said, he was just a driver, but he's looking after, and he's talking about his life taking photographs, and especially at the 6th of January, he was there taking photographs in the Capitol building and amazing stuff, but I mean, he's an amazing photographer, and I think his life story will be very interesting. Another really good group on the 26th will be Greenshine, and these of course have been very popular with people in Canterbury, we've had them here before, and they've been great, and then also, of course, one of the big groups for everybody who's cherished the ladies, Irish Music, Sounds and Dance, Thursday September the 26th at 8pm. West Kilmarnour Sports and Leisure Centre now, of course, Judy Madden, Mary Coogan, Mirella Murray, Kathleen Boyle, and we'll be joined by Liz and Yvonne Kane, Kate Purcell, Gerard O'Donnell, Trevor Sexton, Bruce Foley, Jimmy Higgins, and Nathan Palazzi, Francis Fallon, and Brian Culligan will all be dancing there as well, so there's going to be an absolutely amazing night as all of us will cherish the ladies, they've put on quite a show. And the Begley's, we've rounded up the Begley's, and the first of the Begley's will be in Christchurch on September 27th at 8pm, and they're all going to be there. And I mentioned last week we're going to have Michael English, A Million Medleys, and he is singing on September the 27th at the West Kilmarnour Sports and Leisure Centre, and that's going to be an amazing concert as well, and Michael English is very, very popular, I've heard a lot of people talking about it. So they're really just heartening, if you go all around Clifton you will find amazing music, you will find amazing art, some of the pieces in various pubs and shops and restaurants are amazing pieces, I've been looking at some of them, and there's a very interesting one, Clifton Surrealism, that's down in the Corner Gallery down at the Station House Complex, and that's quite spectacular. And as I say also, of course, the lovely photographs from Abbey at the Chamber of Commerce office there, and I suppose a big one which is really interesting as well is one down in the Station House Museum, because these portraits which are fantastic, that's just some of the little pieces there, there's more and more, but I'll talk to you a little bit more about that after a while. We're going to take a piece of music, we're not going to go with somebody, obviously this is John Gerard Welsh, who was very much involved with the festival going way, way back, and we're going to listen to a little section of reels here, the Skylark and the Galway Rambler. Now, again, so much, so many different events taking place, and Studio West in the Yiddish Basin, a ferry ticket office there, a lovely gallery, and that's of course Manon and Richard West, with a lot of different aspects there, and Brian Kelly, of course, a local photographer. And an interesting one which is taking place in the box office is the Gals, and this is the Galway Artistic Ladies' Society, and they have quite a show there, I can tell you, and that's not, as it says on the programme, the Old Exchange V&B, that is in the ticket office, but in the Old Exchange V&B, there's just a collective which has a lot of different people taking part in that, a big group of people, and that's really important to support, again, groups of people, as it were, and they also have the Uchtdrachts, they're above the Signal Bar at the Stationhouse Complex, and they're a group, a group show as well. We have lots of other pieces, the Yiddish Turbot Art Floating Colours piece is taking place at the Beach Road Shed, down on the Beach Road, and that's going to be very interesting, and it is interesting because it's there already, but there's lots of other pieces going on, and of course, as I say, the school programme is amazing, and lucky them, they're getting such an amazing collection of pieces there, to give them a feeling of what's actually happening, and that is really, really good as well. But just going back, I suppose, to tomorrow, the 20th, as I say, Luganosa String Quartet in St. Joseph's Church, the Burma, in Stationhouse Theatre, and then on Saturday, a very interesting piece, Situating Practice in Cultural Landscapes, with the architect Steve Larkin, and that should be very interesting, that's at 11 o'clock in the Stationhouse Theatre, and then Murray de Cowley and Donal O'Connor, two amazing performers, will be at 1 o'clock in Christ's Church, and then as I say, Spicket Feast, and the Lifting Ritual Group are also on, and of course then we have lots of other pieces, the Carlew Theatre are presenting out here at Booklet Wood at 4pm on Saturday, and also I think on Sunday, they're there as well, but I will tell you about that a little bit later on as well. I can indeed Oh great, great to talk to you at last Chantal I suppose we're going to talk to you a little bit about these shows that are coming up but before we go on to that just tell me a little bit about Fidget Feet I mean people have seen you here in Clifton many many times doing different performances but what's the actual background to Fidget Feet? Yeah so Fidget Feet, we're actually 26 years old and Clifton Arts Week has been one of the biggest supporters of Fidget Feet growing as an organisation and a company We came here when we were very young and only learning crane work So Fidget Feet, mainly we mix aerial which is circus and dance and theatre and music and we make shows off cranes, off buildings, we make shows for young audiences and theatres and adults so there's not anything we don't do We just love making shows and travelling around and performing them to as many people as we can And your shows of course are all very spectacular, I mean never mind the part that you're hanging out in the sky on cranes and doing crazy things but even without that I can remember our national park and one of the shows where you had not leprechauns but fairies and people being abducted and all sorts of strange creatures So you really put a huge amount of performance, it's very high octave, it's really really interesting the way you do it Yeah and well you know we're all Irish so we love a good story so a lot of the work that Fidget Feet does, the heart of it is the storytelling part of it And we also love being able to take the audience on a journey with that story and this new show House is really about bringing people into a crazy world of bingo and music and cranes and all the neighbourhoods So tell me about the shows that are on on Saturday at 2pm on Sunday the 1st and the 4th but what's the actual kind of line up, will people be actually playing bingo? Hello? Hello Chantal? Hello Chantal? Finnegan Collins that I mentioned, lovely programme with Haydn, Schumann, Clara Schumann and beautiful music there, Chopin, Mendelssohn, Stanford I think we can't get Chantal again so I think, no okay don't worry we'll forget about Chantal, just to say that the two wonderful performances from them will be on Saturday and Sunday and I think they are playing a game of bingo so if you like you can have a bingo go along, a drive in walk in spectacular with theatre, circus and bingo and prizes available for people to win so you can actually win spot prizes and it brings all of those pieces together including a lot of interesting impersonations as well I think Elvis is going to make an appearance once more there as well so that should be very interesting. Nick Henley will be here of course on the Sunday the 22nd, an amazing songwriter, singer songwriter really interesting there as well and that should be fantastic I know Galway based very interesting singer songwriter also coming up is also in Conlon on Monday the 23rd of September and as I said we have lovely readings throughout the time as well including Chantal and Siobhan Bennion and they will be on Monday the 23rd in the Obie Suite so that's really interesting once more there. As I say there's lots of other pieces coming up along the way as well and the Grand Parade of course coming up on Saturday the 28th that will be featuring the fidget seat there as well, the big cranes hanging out in the sky and of course you'll have Luxie as well there and that will be followed by Fireworks, weather permitting of course, with Rob Strong then on the gig rig and that will be a great show as well. So that's the 28th and of course then One for the Road on Sunday the 29th featuring Gerry Harrington and Peter Brown and again that should be a lovely kind of a light, not a light necessarily but a lovely kind of end to the programme with traditional musicals there's lots of different pieces I mentioned of course Cherish the Ladies but we also have the wonderful Margie O'Connor, Kyle Hayden, Jamie O'Dowd and Jimmy Higgins there as well so that will be lovely. And that one is taking place on Wednesday the 25th of September. Now as I say so many different things taking place all through this next week including Paul Lynch who of course is the author of five novels and his most recent novel Prophet Song won the 2023 Booker Prize and he's wonderful and this will be in conversation with Paula Shields and he may obviously read little pieces as well possibly. But anyway we're looking forward to that particular talk or that particular piece. We also have the wonderful Mulcahy, Nick Louise and Michelle Mulcahy and they are performing Christchurch on Sunday the 22nd of September. A book launch with Ito Donovan of course from Cork but lives in Manon, well in Eris Manon for so long and she has brought out a beautiful book already of poetry and another one coming up on launch of that on Salt Hotel at 12pm on Sunday the 22nd of September. And as I say just so much going on all the way through so it's a really really exciting program but we're going to take another little piece of music. We will go back to John Gerrard's CD and we will take a track here and we are going to go with number 11 of this one which is Slow Air. This one is number 11. The joys of countryside. That's okay. That's okay. Chantel just give us, you were mentioning, we were just asking you there about the actual format of this. Is there actually bingo taking place in this? Yes. So basically this show was inspired during the Covid years when we were all stuck inside. And I have a love of bingo because of my memories of playing bingo with my granny and granddad when I was younger. I was my granny's lucky charm and my granddad he was a bingo caller. So I've always been really interested in the show. And we made an indoor version and then after Covid I really wanted to do an outdoor version. Everyone drives up in a car or you can come without a car. And then we have these characters that are called Sora, all brightly coloured. And they go around and give actual bingo cards to all the families and pens and stuff. And then there's a whole back story. We have the bingo caller who pretends to be an American actor that's returning back and his career has just crashed. And this is like his only chance to be able to make it. And then the new bingo hall manager. So it's a lot of comedy and cracks between the two of them. And then the storyline is that all the different communities are trying to show off what they're really, really good at. So we have a marching band. We have an Elvis impersonator that arrives on a tractor. We have pom-pom dancers. We've got break dancers. And then we have fidget seats flying in the sky off the crane and off some aerial rigs. So it's impossible to explain. One of the festivals we went to said it's like Father Ted on caffeine. It's just mad cracks, basically. It sounds a bit like you're all on speed to get this one going because so many different people and so many different aspects. As I said, your shows are always so exciting. And then, of course, as you throw in the fidget seats kind of hanging out of the sky. So that will be another aspect to it. It's an amazing chance for people to get along and see this. It will take place at Skullwearer at Clifton. That's up along by Passa Hospital. And there's plenty of parking up there. People can come up and get involved in this wonderful house performance by fidget seats and all the other people taking part in this one. So, Chantelle, we're out of time, unfortunately.
