Meeting traditions, meeting cultures You are working together, absolutely fantastic Thank you so much And the group will be performing again here In Clifton Town Hall at 1pm tomorrow So please support them So Bula Boss Wonderful So I'd like to invite our Festival Director Des Lally, to the podium Please Yes, very good Right on time Thank you Yeah, as Karen said, isn't it marvellous when two cultures Can meet together in harmony through the arts And I think that's what Clifton Arts Festival is all about Ladies and gentlemen, you're so welcome And thank you for coming this evening Yesterday at the opening of Mick O'Dea's Marvellous exhibition That came in was the fabulous Mo West If you don't mind me saying so Sailing in the 90s And looking resplendent Also, here this evening Our great friend Michael Glasson Who's coming to the Clifton Arts Festival I think it's here at the Census Foundation Also sailing brilliantly Sailing brilliantly into his 90s And on the other end of the spectrum this morning I saw Helen O'Donoghue at the exhibitions With the school children In their uniforms, looking great And I said to myself This is how the arts straddles our lives How it is so important to our soul And how it is so important to the community And it's uplifting It's life enhancing I'd like to welcome Senator Pauline O'Reilly And the county councillors And all the dignitaries of Clifton That's what you all are And friends here this evening It's my honour and privilege To introduce our guest of honour this evening Yeah, I'd call him that Keith Finnegan Dr. Keith Finnegan Dr. Keith Finnegan In recent times from the University of Galway Freeman of Galway City He can graze his sheep in Ayr Square And these honours were given to Keith After he stepped down from A 40 year career with Galway Bay FM Where he was known as the voice of Galway Now, the voice of Galway Keith's spirit and professionalism And his integrity Came into all our homes Over so many years Dealing with issues that were difficult Dealing with happy issues But always in an impartial way And with a kindly spirit So, when Keith stepped down from Galway Bay FM We rang him and we said Keith, would you ever open our festival this year? And Keith said without hesitation Yes, it would be an honour Because Keith has been coming here for many years He knows the ethos, he knows the soul of the festival Along with his wife Joan Beautiful artist, talented, creative lady And they've given to Clifton Their friendship and their creativity So, it was an honour to have Keith accept Now, I also note that we asked him Long before he got the doctorate from NUIG And long before he was made a Freeman of Galway But anyway, we are honoured We are honoured to have him here And particularly I think of during COVID Keith's reassuring voice on the radio When we couldn't go anyplace Saying, you know, keep strong We'll get through this It shows the power of the voice The power of radio The power of integrity Not everybody is gifted to have that I'm honoured, ladies and gentlemen To welcome, to open the 47th Clifton Arts Festival Dr Keith Finnegan, Freeman of Galway Is that really me, I wonder? Just before I go to, I've just a few words here And what I did was I wrote these from the heart As to what Clifton means to me So don't get frightened by the amount of pages It's only four minutes long in total But in relation to the doctorate So I get that in November Just as a by the way, just how a family Our family operates But the President rang me and said Look, we're going to give you an honorary doctorate Now that you're not working Doctorate of Literature So I rang Joan, told her, and Katie told Katie, who's our daughter And I rang our son, who works in Dublin In an open plan office So I told him, I said, I'm very proud of you Dad I love you Dad, everything's fantastic Dad I can't talk, it's an open plan office He said, I really can't talk And I said, I'm fine, but I said I spoke to the President of the college And I asked him whether I could get a prescription pad When I get the doctorate At that stage he took a gasp And there was all sorts of language coming out Which was very flowery And I said, so much for an open plan office So that kind of killed that one off Anyway, this evening It's a pleasure to be here I want to recognise Senator Pauline O'Reilly Who's been a great friend of ours for years Senator John Kind is with us as well Gerry Keane And the wonderful Councillor Eileen Mannion So as I go through the four and a half, five minutes I put myself in a position Here in Clifton About how important it is for me Because I love Clifton And genuinely I'm thrilled to be here tonight with Joan Because this is our second home, Clifton And what we love to do here Is just to be ourselves And to be with people But anyway, it's great to be here To officially open the Clifton Ancestral But as we outlined, it's been a remarkable year for us As a family Marked by several milestones We've been in Galway up to 34 years on air To give young talent An opportunity to flourish The freedom of the city Try bringing the sheep and the ponies in Though I haven't done it at all And Galway County Council Had a Civic Reception for us Which was wonderful Then the phone goes And I really thought that life couldn't get any better We have our health, we have each other Children are doing well All of our parents are no longer with us Now it's time for us to flourish But then the phone rang and I received the invitation From, I would classify as The finest gentleman that I've come across in life And the two men in question Dr. Brendan Flynn and Des Lally And they asked me to open This year's Clifton Arts Festival And I was actually emotional Because I just love the festival And to be standing here tonight With you As a Galway region Telling you why I love it And the privilege of being here Is very special It kind of was truly for me Like the perfect finale To an extraordinary year The icing on the cake But I would class Brendan and Des As just colleagues And dear friends Because they would do anything for me And I would do anything for them And that's the way it's been And that's how this relationship came about And that's why it's so strong And Clifton as well But I then decided That I'd go back to 1977 A bit of research I don't do much of it, but I did a little bit But reflecting back on it 47 years, 1977 I was 15 I'm 62, save you doing the maths I was 15 A year of significant events Just think about it Jimmy Carter was inaugurated as the President of the United States Jack Lynch Who remembers Jack Lynch among us Became Taoiseach of Ireland And Ireland welcomed the first McDonald's On Grafton Street The other issues Which I left to the end Were on our screens every evening Which were the London bombings There on a nightly basis So then when I pondered from there I said, what was in the news in 1977 But in Clifton the news was the Pony Show Featured on RT61 News at the time With the one for late Jim Fahey Reporting from there And also the community school Was growing steadily And I know that Sean Kind and Eileen and all the crew Put a lot of work into that But back then they had to get port-a-captains In the community school With the demand that they had So it really was 1977 A time of transition But then Brendan Flynn and his colleagues Indeed in the In the community school at Elthor Demonstrated what I think Is a remarkable courage In establishing this festival On the rugged edge of the Atlantic And I say that with love In 1977 If you think about it It was a huge, huge decision to make Des has gone through my broadcasting career And I've loved every single minute of it But I've always felt incredibly fortunate Because I came from Very humble beginnings Wonderful parents And just humble beginnings I love radio I just love people, I love radio And I never thought I could achieve what I wanted to achieve Which I've done And I've finished, finalised And put behind me And there's other Paths coming for me very shortly I couldn't have done it without the support of The people here, my wife Joan My family, my extended family But it's Just a very special place For us in Clifton And I'm honoured to be here tonight As I said, but driving in today Was very special for us During my time on radio We covered a broad range of topics Which affected the city and the county But it's been an honour for us to do that But some of my fondest memories Are from when I was out in the community The community is very important to me Because I came from a strong community And I remember a memorable moment in 1992 And I know he's with us here today When we covered the Clifton Arts Festival And the reception from Paul Hughes And the warm hospitality of the Abbey Glen Castle But back then, we had no internet Absolutely what was the internet Then it wasn't But we managed to connect via a single copper wire From the Sky Road in Clifton To Sandy Road in Galway Thanks to Aircom Or as it was known then, Telecom Aeron It was there that many of the wonderful friendships Were forged in Clifton And has always held a special place In our hearts for Joan and I As well as our two children My brother George used to live out the road In Athery And they would spend their summers here And they always remember being brought in To Clifton Bookshop and getting the last two copies Of the last Harry Potter book That's their memory of Clifton They're jealous by the way we're here tonight And they're not with us So I was driving out Anytime I'm driving out the M59 Once I come to Uchtdorad A profound sense of joy washes over me I just get that funny Fuzzy feeling of coming here as well And the Clifton Arts Festival Gives me that funny Feeling as well I tried to figure out last night While I was finishing up a few words What is it about Connemara and Clifton I figured out it's the scenery The people, the fresh air And everything about Connemara Feels both mystical and magical And it really is a true second home And our happiest place in Ireland Over the years I've had the honour of Interviewing many remarkable individuals here in Clifton Including Seamus Heaney And his great friend Des Cavanagh I recently saw John Sheehan On the Late Late Show last Friday night Which reminds me of the incredible talent and spirit That graced this festival Seamus Heaney held Brendan Flynn In the highest regard I would just say tonight Brendan is an exceptional Educator whose modesty Kindness and genuine nature Have made him one of the finest people I've met in life And I mean that by the way As an educator Look at the wonderful job he's done with Des Valley To make him director of the festival I mean that took some amount of work To be quite honest It's a work in progress I think As we open this year's Clifton Arts Festival on behalf of Joan, myself and all here present Can we just celebrate the vision And dedication of those who made it possible Especially to Brendan, to Des The volunteers, we met them today Right around the arts trail At Mick O'Dea's and otherwise Without volunteers this festival could not function So for the volunteers For the entertainers which we've seen tonight And the collaboration between two continents Which is magical The musicians, the poets and all in the festival Here's to a festival Brimming with creativity Inspiration and what is Very unique, the enchanting Spirit that is Clifton On behalf of Joan and I Thank you so much and the festival is now open I'll keep sitting in there Seeing his normal self But his great speech there And as I say Warmly received by everybody So I think Carolyn is back up now Thank you so much Keith And thank you Obviously for launching the festival But for sharing some very personal Memories and thoughts about Clifton And Connemara that I'm sure most of us Share along our lives So One final We're all here to hear it He can't let us down Brendan is just Making his way up now I don't think he was expecting To be doing it tonight but anyway He is never a man short of words So here we have Dr. Brendan Flynn to address The group here Um How do I say Just for fear we might miss a word Sixty years ago Today Sean O'Casey died His three wonderful plays Centre Upon the importance Of togetherness Of the abhorrence of violence And peace for all people Hearing those Wonderful musicians From Charlottesville Those beautiful Ukrainian Singers Really touch The chords of our heart Hearts for their Beauty, their honesty Their integrity And their wonderful spirit The festival is very very important With apologies To my wife first I was up very early this morning To such a beautiful moon And The sky in the far distance Was beginning To light up I just thought Of the earlier moments Of Hamlet When they were wandering around the castle And they were wondering Had they seen anything in the night Had the ghost Appeared The underworld and violence appeared But Shakespeare always stops Showing the track I don't know who says it But whoever He says But look the morn in russet And mantle fad Walks high on dew over young High eastern hill And I just felt Well Jesus on this day Is a beauty For the opening of the Clifton Arts Festival Because with all Of the unrest With Yates Talking about turning and turning And the widening gyre and the falcon Not hearing the falconer We here In Clifton We are grateful For allowing this festival to happen I am and we are all Very grateful to the Arts Council To Galway County Council To Thoughts Ireland To the Sheehan Foundation And to all our wonderful sponsors Who have enabled us To put this festival together Because we need This wonderful celebration People need it I think as I get older I am beginning to read the bible Is that Fear of mortality I wonder Is that I don't know But I'll give you Exactly Paul to the Corinthians In a very famous letter Talks about Put your thoughts on higher ambitions Higher thoughts At a higher level Of maybe what I would read into it Of creativity Of spiritual awareness Of what Seamus Heaney once called The power of the transcendent Which Heaney often spoke of Which in a way Ireland And in a way that we're inclined to forget about But I Thank this community In 1977 My God I know Ida Emanuel And Jerry King remembers We had two comings With two deaths of schools We had the old one demolished and the new one coming And with the pre-fab demolished and coming So what a wonderful school We have there today And I just congratulate and I thank the staff Management Board of Management in those schools For allowing and encouraging What we feel is very very important In the lives of young people I was on my way up This morning to the church and I talked Festy Price, the Mass was on for Festy Price today When I was suddenly met by A wonderful sight Can you imagine over 200 Young children all holding Their hands together Chattering to the sound of Marching along to the opening Mass in the church And on the way Various Welcoming signs of saying We're looking forward to the festival sir And I said All those young children You would wish for them a future As bright as their faces were This morning with delight With joy as they were accompanied By their wonderful teachers to the church So I thank the teachers Everywhere And Keith for his wonderful recall I suppose in a way The power of radio is so important The power of that voice I won't get nostalgic But looking back on years When we were in Nigeria The voice of the BBC World Service was very important They said London calling And sometimes you would Hang on hoping That maybe you'd hear the name Of the Irish rugby team mentioned For the next Rugby International And you can hear and recall And have memories of Mike Gibson Scoring a great five with a reverse pass From Kevin Flynn I think in 1973 So Keith Thanks for your encouraging words Thanks to the school And to the teachers And I just really want to congratulate I suppose the West Connemara Sports and Leisure Centre With a lot of going and coming Over the years but they're celebrating 30 years this year And tonight It's so beautifully decorated By Danny Vaughan and his team For a Hermitage Green concert on Friday Cherish the Ladies next Wednesday And Michael English on Friday So I was Called upon suddenly by Karen Karen Lanyon Her power I just congratulate her and thank her For all she has done For Forum and Connemara And I don't give out Assessments but Des Lally would be 9 out of 10 Or 10 out of 10 You know And I know like having Buried his mother Joy Four or five days ago He's still in that great spirit Of optimism and you know Having done So much on the world Of the Gate Theatre There is that theatre There is that character and there is that Silence behind the sentence And the way the question is asked If you don't give the Marie Walsh and the CliftonCultus group who tirelessly dedicate you know their obviously there's so much input and the practice and the coming together and the parents that come to drive to do the transporting and everything it's all part of a collective package and we're very very thankful so they're going to join us here on stage and I suppose I'll sign off here by saying thank you so much to ye for all for coming here tonight I'd like to thank all the performers Kevin Gavin and the staff here Anna Carey and the staff of Clifton Town Hall who I hope you all agree isn't the Town Hall looking amazing without venues such as this hall you know the magic of Clifton Arts Festival is so diminished so I think they're coming on stage in a couple of minutes a couple of moments so I'd like to welcome Marie Walsh and the Clifton Cultus group with special guest Catriona Canavan thank you very much everybody Right that was Karen there finishing things off for us there and Marie Walsh and her group are all coming out on stage now there's quite a gang of them I'm not sure how they're all going to sit but all the chairs are in position for them and it's lovely as I say to see so many wonderful musicians from young and old this seems to be kind of the middle group as such they are the very young ones but they're not there tonight this is a slightly more senior group but still not the adult in fact somebody was asking me were the adult groups still there I said I'm not really sure was it there or not but anyway as I say it's lovely to see all this and the harp being brought over heads to be put down in front and as I say people coming together there's great great musicians in this particular room and I'm looking forward to listening to what they have to perform because all of these guys and girls are superb musicians and really really lovely to have them with us this evening now we've been listening as I say to the various speakers there and as I say thanks to Keith Hillingan for his very kind words to make sure that everybody felt that they were part of the whole scene here because it is lovely to think that you know the Different Arts Festival over all the years has such a wonderful kind of track record I suppose also just to say that don't forget to listen to Arts on Air which is running every day we are starting Thursday as Friday the 25th so we'll get over now to Marie Welsh and her group well they're just getting themselves organised there so so as I say a huge group of people on stage here and they are going to start off in just a moment and as I say it's lovely to see such a great mixture of people to give us some really really wonderful music I know the audience are going to be very impressed and happy with this so I think we're just about ready to get started they're just as I say tuning up and getting themselves ready but they should be on the go very soon, in any second but as I mentioned the Arts on Air piece here on TMA you
