The transcription is about an interview with a Spin instructor named Abby. She shares that she teaches only math, started teaching in her second semester, and chose to be a Spin instructor after enjoying a Spin class at a college in New Hampshire. Abby finds teaching Spin fulfilling and believes it helps her connect with others and relieve stress. She talks about gaining confidence and setting goals to create a fun and inclusive environment for participants. Abby enjoys the music aspect of Spin classes and feels fulfilled by enhancing others' experiences. So I'm going to start by just asking like a few basic questions just like for the interview purpose was like I already know your name is Abby, but I'm going to have you state your full name. I'm Abby Erfman. And then how old are you? I'm 21. Wait, what year are you? I'm a junior, yeah. And do you teach anything other than STEM classes? No, I only teach math. Okay. And how long have you been teaching? This is my second semester. Okay. Did you do SPIN before this? Like did you participate in classes or did you? Yeah, I did a little bit here, but mostly it's when I'm at home. Okay, cool. So now we're going to get into more like open-ended questions. So why did you choose to be a SPIN instructor? Well, I went to SPIN class when I was not here. I went to a place, what do you call it? Oh, you are? Yeah. Like southern New Hampshire? Yeah. So I went to, do you know where it's down in New Hampshire? Yeah. I went to a place called Advice College down in New Hampshire. Oh. And I like loved it. And honestly, it was like my first or second class I was looking at the person in the podium and I was like, I'm going to do this. Really? Yeah, that's cool. Wait, do you live here? I live in Andover. Oh, okay, yeah. Yeah, I'm from New York-Portsmouth. Perfect. Yeah. What do you feel you get out of being a SPIN instructor other than fitness purposes? Like is it fulfilling to you? Do you like take away anything else, do you think? I would say like attending a SPIN class, which is a little bit different. Like attending a SPIN class, you get like a lot of things. Yes, it's a workout. But like if you go to SPIN class rather than like just exercise, you can do it with other people for like a reason. It's because it's more fun and just like it's better, you get a better connection with the people. It's more fun and it's motivating. No, that's like, no, yeah. You walk out feeling different and just like. Yeah. I just love what I get to feel and like my experience, I find it fulfilling to hopefully give other people that same feeling that I do. Oh, yeah. And then another part of going to SPIN class or teaching a SPIN class, like no matter like what's going on, I feel like it's always such a good opportunity to like pause. Like I'll be stressed out or I'll like not be happy about something. Like then I'll go teach my class and hopefully I didn't think about it for like a whole hour. Yeah, I would definitely agree with that. I feel like that's why I like I do like I start to do a lot of other classes like Pilates and like a few other things. I should do those. And I like the SPINs the best because I feel like I'm like very, very focused on like the SPIN. And like I really like for a full hour, I'm like like nothing really exists like in my mind. And it's very like stress relieving. A good way to like like just like take a break. And I also feel like even when I'm like yesterday, I did one at 430 and I was really tired yesterday and I was like, I think I want to cancel. But I decided not to. And I was like, this is going to be hard because I'm so tired. But I feel like SPINs like they actually rejuvenate you as opposed to like other workouts. I don't know if you're tired. Like, I feel like it's like hard to do like Pilates or something like it requires more like mental focus, I would say. And SPIN is something that you can kind of just like do like more easily. And you can kind of just like it's just like how much work you put in it. So, yeah, I would definitely agree with that. I feel like there's like between like the music, the instructor, and like hearing what the instructor is saying, you're paying attention to that. And then you also have like the movement, like it takes focus, like not too much focus to do. Like, it's definitely like, oh, like what leg are you going, like what movement are you added to it? Yeah. And between all that, like, you just think about it. Not think about what you're doing. Yeah. Yes, I definitely agree with that. Is there anything that you feel like you've learned from teaching these classes or anything that maybe surprised you since you started teaching them? I haven't been doing it very long. Yeah. But I don't know if it's something that I learned or like. Yeah. If there isn't like. I'm not quite sure if anything surprised me. Yeah. No, that's fine. Yeah. Just maybe anything that like, is there anything that you didn't really expect like to like maybe feel or like see, experience, whatever, like teaching? I feel like it's given me more confidence in myself and like who I am. Yeah. Because it's a little bit of a challenge and it's a little bit unnerving to like be in front of a room and talk on a microphone. And like you are the workout, so everyone is going to get you to do it the whole time and they're going to thank you the whole time. And like being able to do it and like just, I feel like I've just gained confidence and like I learned who I am more, which has then gone into my confidence, I would say. Yeah. Yeah. And also just like, I just like love it. Yeah. I think it's great. Is there anything, I guess, that you hope to like achieve by teaching these classes? Maybe like a personal goal or a goal for like the other participants? I feel like I definitely have a lot of goals. I would say that like I want to be more confident. I want to feel more free to have fun while I do it so it allows other people to feel the same. Like when you're teaching, especially at school, where like people can be a little bit more reserved just because of the environment. I feel like, you know, like girls our age can be a little bit reserved and like don't want people to look at them or don't want to do something different sometimes. I feel like there's a little bit of that with our age and our generation. Like it can be a little bit challenging. Yeah. But I feel like that's one thing. Yeah, I definitely would agree with that. I feel like for me, like I didn't start doing the classes until literally this semester. Even though I like wanted to do them like the whole first semester. And I was like, oh, I'm so excited. Like I basically get like free, like included with tuition classes. And I'm like, I'm never going to get that anywhere else. Like that's going to be so great. And I didn't do them for a whole semester because I was like, I didn't want to do them alone. I was like, I'm going to be really bad at it. It's going to be like embarrassing. And then I just went. And I was like, wait, this is fine. Because also like so many people are like just starting to do them or are not. Like I don't know. And also nobody even like cares. Like nobody is like. And that's what you have to realize. Yeah. When I started going, like I didn't go by myself. Just in the first year because I was like, should I bring you in and start going with a friend? And then I was like, wait. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I do them like most of my workout classes alone. I brought some of my friends to one of them. But I'm just like, I mean, I'm doing this. Like do you guys want to come try it out? Yeah, this is. And now I do them like I do a workout class like every day. And it just spins like I would say like two or three times a week now. So. And then you haven't ever seen anything like that. Mm-hmm. Yeah. What would you say is your favorite part about being a spin instructor? I know we kind of probably touched on that a little bit in other questions. But if you had to pick like one or like two things that you would say are your favorite parts about being an instructor. I feel like my favorite part about being an instructor would probably just be like. You're good. You're good. I know. It's hard to like think on the spot sometimes. Your favorite part about being a spin instructor would probably be. I am just like knowing that I'm allowed someone else's experience. So like. Mm-hmm. Like what I go to spin for. Mm-hmm. Yeah. I'm also very, very into the music side of it. Yeah. I love creating the playlist. But I love the fact that it's just like all about and all surrounded by music. Mm-hmm. That's like a big thing about spin. Yeah. Yeah. That's. I interviewed Amanda yesterday. Amanda. I actually don't know her. But I see her on the schedule. I'm like I want to. Well, I think. I can't remember like which like one that like left me. There's two Amandas. Wait. Was there a spin one or was there a girl spin one? Well, they're both. There's two spin ones. Actually. Yeah. One was. There's one with brown hair and one with blonde hair. I thought there was like. I interviewed. A blonde one and a spin one. Am I wrong? No. I thought there was only like one two that. No. There's. I think there is two because I did a spin with one Amanda yesterday. And I interviewed a different Amanda yesterday. Oh, okay. But she said the same thing about the music and the playlist. And she was like that's even one of the. Yeah. So, yeah, I think that's a kind of a. It seems to be kind of a thing that you like. Wouldn't expect to be like, I guess, a factor. But it's kind of a common factor. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
